I'm that TTK who has returned after a year long break. I have listened and watched in streams about how powerful can trained squadrons be and I was thinking that maybe I shoud try a Carrier combined fleet now that I've finally unlocked the last part of E-3. The problem is that this last year I have missed a lot of stuff like those new shiny plane squadrons and I've yet to do that event chain for the prototype catapults so no cranes Kai Ni.

This is what I've got now. I know I'll need to train the squads but that shouldn't be a problem since I've got enough resources (?)

So, should I give a try to Carrier combined fleet or stick to old Battleship combined fleet? Any suggestions on how to improve my planes with what I've got?

If you think CV Hime + 2 Wo Kai with turbo takoyaki are easier than BB Hime, go ahead. You can see how it goes for few runs, CTF might be somewhat usable for chipping.
Obviously choose Dragons, Kaga and Taihou. Before you sortie, craft more good planes, you only have six usable bombers atm. Get them to chevrons as well. Dive bombers suck unfortunately.

No, I always stopped at node I because I never had a run where AV hime didn't taiha at least one of my ships. I had thought to try continuing to the air raid nodes in case that was related to the debuff, but never got the chance because of that. I'm also curious if a debuff mechanic exists because it's kind of suspicious that the outer path would exist at all, much less have routing requirements for it, so maybe the air raid nodes (H and C) are related.

You don't even need the Rei-Go ships for easy E-2 route. I did the map with Ooyodo, Fubuki K2 Akizuki, Ayanami K2, Kinugasa K2 and Tone K2 and went easy route 100% of the times.

You're not forced to use the best ships as long as you have the patience and time to grind out hard maps with the ones that you like. This could be easy or hard depending on what it is you're trying to do, but there's an Anon here who clears final event maps on hard with some ships that are generally accepted to be bad. That sometimes requires luck modernizing them with Maruyu, or it just requires a ton of resources to throw at a map, but it can be done.

Your example is a bit different, though, Maya has the best anti-air cut-in in the game and a lot of people use her just for that. It wouldn't be worth using Atago in that role, really. But if you were just using Maya for regular shelling you could easily use Atago instead.

Are you interested in buying slots? 100 is too limited if you are even remotely serious.
And yes, you should level up the ones you like the most.
But, you should also keep in mind that certain ships are required for having an easier time in events and even in normal maps, plus once remodeled they may come with gear that you can't get anywhere else.

Conclusion: give love to whoever you like, but don't neglect others.
