How is the new month treating you?
I created a new account because I lost the ID of my old one and tried to play but I got dc'ed on my first game tonight repeatedly so I just gave up.
Also, played my quickest game so far.
I said "Rabbit Rabbit" this when I woke up month, so things are already looking up.
>accidentally queued up in ippan
Well, fuck this shit.
If you actually lose in ippan you might as well stay there.
Do you guys know where to buy the cheapest but quality mahjong tiles in Europe? The best I could find was at 85$ on amazon
>reaching yakuman tenpai twice tonight
And, yes, a man must riichi his important hands.
Get the lead in the first two rounds, no matter how small, and then snuff out all opposition with 1000 point hands. Do not riichi after you take the lead, if you deal in you won't have time to get it back.
If you couldn't get the lead early on: do you still have your dealer turn? If you do, start racking up honba. If you don't, you're probably screwed unless you can pull in a lot of dora. If you can't do that either, riichi and pray.
Mukoubuchi is a good manga that only has tonpuusens in it, they go over a few other strategies in it.
Speed is paramount. In the first couple of rounds, don't be afraid to open up your hand, even if it means going kata-agari for tanyao or fanpai. If neither tanyao or fanpai are practical, go for maximum tile efficiency and riichi as soon as you can. Don't be too eager to break up penchan waits to keep isolated middles - early tenpai on a penchan is better than a late ryanmen.
Dama is preferable once you're in the lead, but contrary to what the other guy said, it's fine to riichi if you have to, but only if: a) your lead isn't already big enough (ie 8000 point gap); b) your lead isn't so small that it's practically irrelevant (ie less than 3000 point gap). In the former case you don't need to riichi, and in the latter, the 1000 point deposit makes it much easier for others to overtake you.
>this is plastered onto your door or wall
How do you respond?
Hey trakss, are you able to confirm yet whether you can make it to your match this weekend?
I'm also still waiting to hear back from Mnog. If you're here, please respond.
>How is the new month treating you?
0+3+1+2 = 6戦
Do you guys ever riichi to try and intimidate or rush the other players? Like if I'm dealer in south 4 and I get a tenpai with a Kanchan wait after a few draws I'll riichi to try and scare them/make them rush
Every time when I'm trying riichi to intimidate my opponents, it somehow ends oikake. That's why I usually hold up a little when it's early and I still have some time to improve hand/fold.
Only if I'm so far in the lead that I can deal into a haneman from the guy in second and still not lose. That and pon/kan'ing the dora with no actual plan on how to win the hand afterwards.
Because at some point of tenhou ranking, we either plateau or appear to plateau. Sometimes, in order to break that plane, it's better to just start over (for new perspective maybe).
>immediately follow with riichi
The combination of the two should scare the pants off players.
Every time I make a new account to have a fresh start, I get higher and higher before I plateau.
First one was like 300 games, 2dan R150. Second went up to 2dan R1700. Third one went up to 3dan R1960 in two weeks in 100 games. The problem is that I eventually play too aggressively and start tanking my stats. When I make a new account, I remember the basics and I play better or something.
This one is off to a good start so far.
>I bet they are so scared of my riichi right now
>call closed kan because why not
>deal in because i'm retarded
>pretend i misclicked and blame Tenhou
Yeah been there.
>going for chiitoi
>accidentally break apart a Dora pair
I literally stand up and start swearing and feel embarrassed at the thought of the other players seeing me lose my shit
I will say tenhou has been pretty reliable compared to other online mahjong I've played.
>on this site playing riichi
>one away from tenpai, discard safe tile.
>the tile I discarded fucking flies back into my hand from the goddamn pond and my drawn tile gets tossed
Happened on several occasions. It was what motivated me to learn tenhou's interface
Would you guys have pushed?
I safely folded, but I think there was a potential for a huge chiitoitsu hand. It was a tsumo at the end, nevertheless.
It just felt bad looking at the replay. At least it was good folding practice.
The game was also closer than I'd like to admit since shimocha kept interrupting my hands while getting huge tsumos. So I was wondering where I could polish my game etc.
There's nothing you can do about someone getting big tsumos and overtaking your lead that way. If it's late in the game you can try to push with fast hands but beyond that it's usually not worth the risk of dealing in. Let the other players take that risk for you.
If you're lucky, they'll bust someone out winning off each other, but in the worst case scenario where you get second because someone gets big tsumos, that's not bad at all.
And fuck you, shitsaba, for stripping NBSPs from my posts.
A bit of advice. Aside from throwing out the dora, which was questionable by itself, with these point totals, you could have kept the dora and went into a quiet tenpai.
I had thought you were going for chitoi, and that hesitation after you riichi'd made me nearly certain you wouldn't throw the dora out and I would have to start making hard decisions. I'm glad I was wrong, but I'm confused as to why you did that. I don't want someone to become the next Gogo.
The only reason you're not winning as far as I can see from spectator mode is that lost you that hon-itsu on your first hand because you decided to not stick with your wait and changed to a worse one. I was amazed when that didn't work out for you.
Will that just make me a master mahjong player or a master gambler?
Oh right, here's the tentative bracket. We'll most likely have to swap players around later on so we can match up schedules.
skskhktk has pulled out of the tournament, so unless someone else wants to join, I'll sub in for him myself and the top two of the other three will advance. Still haven't heard back from Mnog yet, so we may need another sub in that match.
Sending announcements, making sure everyone knows when their match is, having people confirm that they can make it to their match, and arranging new match times if necessary. In the past we just used IRC but some people wouldn't know how, or people wouldn't show up.
As long as you check it or set it up to forward to your main address.
Okay, to avoid having to redo the whole bracket, I'm just going to insert you guys in for the preliminaries. Please confirm that you can make it to these times.
Side A: http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/to?iso=20160206T14&p0=1440&msg=4jan2016+Round+1-A
Side B: http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/to?iso=20160206T05&p0=1440&msg=4jan2016+Round+1-B
Thanks. Don't forget to enter in the times that you're available to play: http://whenisgood.net/4janchamp
I'll make announcements here too, so keep an eye out I guess.
Side B would be pretty stacked.
fumofumo here. I might have to change my available times since my internet connection at night time is rather unstable. If that's not allowed then I will rather bow out of the competition rather than have myself disconnect from the game multiple times.
Unless I state otherwise in a few hours, I'll be there.
I wasn't paying attention and signed up because you said you needed another, where will I be and are there any special rules? -Universe
No special rules, just regular Tenhou ari-ari. Two hanchan per match, the two players with the highest combined score advance to the next round.
I won't bother setting up a championship lobby. We'll probably just use 7447 or some other empty lobby. I'll let you know closer to the match.
There's a video somewhere of someone on JRM getting nagashi mangan after double riichi. Lots of other crazy stuff too, like triple ron into multiple yakuman, that sort of thing. I miss JRM.
This was triggering my autism. Nice design, otherwise.
It’s ok with me.
Don’t tell me that the letter with confirmation got to spam.
It’s time to rewatch DtB for you.
It's what you deserve for throwing out a live honor tile during a riichi, and for not noticing the very suspicious discards after that closed kan.
Can anyone here go to Japan and visit the mahjong parlors to tell me what it's like? Thanks.
>Somebody elses does it and wins, sometimes I'm the one dealing into it
>Don't call riichi
>Somebody else calls riichi and I have to tear up apart my hand if I don't want to deal hiw winning tiles
>Somebody elses does it and it's faster than me
>Get a really good hand
>Somebody else calls a yakuhai super fast
>Somebody gets some bullshit 4 dora after a kan and wins
I hate mahjong so much.
>mfw, that fucker was poised to tsumo that hand, if it weren't for that tile call
Yup. A tanki hell wait, and he was going to tsumo it on the very turn after getting into tenpai for his double yakuman before the guy who had 7 possible tiles to win from. Illogical bullshit at its finest.
>2nd place behind by 10k+
>riichi on a pinfu hand with 3 Dora
>Ippatsu tsumo, 1 ura Dora
>tfw comeback baiman
God you're fucking cheesy
We knew you had it in you, boy.
It's quite amazing when you really think about it. Without the second kan's uradora, it wouldn't have been that big. And the 7pin for the second kan was the rinshan draw from the first kan. If it wasn't for the first kan, the second one would have never happened.
Okay, the tentative schedule for the side B quarterfinals is ready. Had to swap Corak and 二階堂夢乃 to get things to line up, so Corak escapes the gauntlet.
QF-B1: Sunday 7th Feb, 7am UTC
QF-B2: Sunday 7th Feb, 2am UTC
All participants, please confirm that you can make it to these times.
It doesn't matter here because it's baiman obviously, but I'm still trying to learn how to track fu. How is this 70?
30 for the closed ron
+16 for the 9 pin terminal kan
+4 for the 4 pin set
What did I miss?
There is some people who are so shit at the game that they seriously believe the game is rigged against non-JP IPs.
A particular class of them is people who go "I didn't deal in even once and still lost! It's rigged!", thus proving they are so trash at the game they deserve no right to speak about anything concerning it.
Would you have enough resolve to punish the bullies?
Re-ealy? What if shimocha has 56s ryanmen? Or 68s kanchan? Or tanki? You never know what tile is safe except for genbutsu.
> If you're going to be scared…
> you might as well not ask the question in the first place
For what purpose would I post that screenshot if I wouldn’t riichi that myself? Are you even lesbian little girl?
What kind of hurr durr reply is that? The possibility of dealing into someone other’s hand persists until the hand is finished. The same goes for the assumptions how safe a particular tile is. Which is the real question, since >>14721450 states that 7s is safe.
Let us decide who is a true lesbian on the table.
Do you imply that you’re not participating in the tournament?
Side A preliminaries soon. Is everyone here yet?
Toimen discarded 7s right after shimocha's riichi.
>His natural luck is very high based on my observation this past 2 months.
Actually, since I forgot to say "rabbit, rabbit" last month, it was pretty bad (comparatively), but this month I remembered so I'm fine.
Congrats to Nishishi and UNIVERSE, you guys made it to the quarterfinals. I've tentatively scheduled the side A quarters, if you're participating please confirm that you can make it.
QF-A1: Sunday 7th Feb, 11am UTC
QF-B2: Monday 8th Feb, 4am UTC
I'm liking February so far. Still haven't made back all I lost in January.
Thank you for the games. Maybe we'll get out of East 1 next time.
that's some serious lesbian bullshit
http://justanotherjapanesemahjongblog.blogspot.com/ - Click list of articles on the left.
http://osamuko.com/list-of-mahjong-articles-in-english-by-xkime/ - Other decent reads/translated stuff.
Thank you I'll go read that, I wanna stop being stomped by bk201
So, how many of you know the score table without looking it up?
Three han from tsumo, ippeikou and dora. Ends up being 4 han 20 fu if it wins on the 4 or 7 sou wait with Pinfu, otherwise it's 3 han 40 fu for the 5-8 sou wait.
Also using the formula is easier
Where is the tenhou executable located? When I install the windows version, it just gives me a shortcut on my desktop that doesn't lead to any executable, and I can't run that shortcut in Japanese locale to fix the broken characters.
I've been looking for local clubs and such, and sometimes you get local events and such but they're more focused on getting new players than providing decent opponents. Anime cons are usually good spots for that too.
I'd say watching some of the commentated pro mahjong on Youtube is good too, because if you understand japanese decently, you can get some insights into decisions the pro players make that you might not understand.
Happy Chinese New Year. In line with the whole "Gong Xi Fa Cai" thing, I recommend you guys check out Fat Choi Spirit, a fun mahjong movie.
I think it's also on Nyaa but we all know how that's doing.
I was hopeful this was the movie I watched in tv back then about a group of people saving their market stalls from a gang or something. I still can't remember what it was because it was a Chinese movie.
Now is your chance Saki-san! You avoided last, now channel the spirit of Corak and make your gyakuten! Pull a tenhou!
>Making an open kan when 2 people including the dealer have riiched
Current tournament status
Farewell to Saki, who died aiming for +-0.
I was definitely trying to win. Taking a pinfu+aka ron would be giving up.
I needed a haneman tsumo or a mangan ron on 二階堂夢乃 to escape last. Just riichi pinfu wasn't going to do that. The best I could hope for was holding on for a 6 or 3p to at least give me tanyao or 二階堂夢乃 dealing into the dealer.
I should have phrased the first comment better, I guess. I wasn't annoyed that you didn't take the 2000 point hand, I was annoyed that you didn't even make an attempt to get the mangan ron or haneman tsumo and instead sat there with pinfu hoping that 二階堂夢乃 would deal in and that the dealer wouldn't just win the whole hanchan. To me, it made more since to go down fighting and praying rather than just praying.
Congrats to nocculta and Nishishi, you guys made it through to the semis.
偽赤木 (sub) +7
Stay tuned for QFA2 in sixteen hours.
No one else put it down, and no one was discarding middle sou tiles. From my perspective it looked dangerous. I wanted to win at least one hand, couldn't do much because everyone was getting into tenpai hella fast especially in the east round. You're right though, I should've went for it.
So, regarding QFB2 which was supposed to be earlier today but was delayed, the only time that matches the availability that everyone submitted is Sunday 2am UTC. We'll have to wait until next week (Sunday 14th Feb, 2am UTC) to have the match.
However, if at least two people are able to compromise on their schedules, we may be able to hold it during the week. Doragan, San-san, Corak and trakss, please let me know by Tuesday if you can compromise.
San-san here. I can't really compromise for Monday, Tuesday, or Friday, given that I have an exam on Tuesday and a club meeting on Friday. Like what Doragon said, it depends on what the times would be.
