No. Matroska containers are much more modern than AVI and if you encode them to be smaller, video quality will suffer horribly. Whether you use MP4 or Matroska won't make a difference by the way.

May I ask what kind of computer you use? If you have a graphics card, it might be worth to use something like MPC with madVR. It's very unusual that something like a 4 Mbps bitrate mkv lags on your computer, unless it's from the 90s.
