I hope to get my first lunatic clear, of EoSD. I think I don't actually enjoy vertical shooters all that much since I can only play on a basic level, but for being a Touhou fan, I know I need to beat Lunatic at least in one game. Beating them all, it seems, would cost me my sanity.

Can you explain to a retard what you mean by 'exploiting'? It seems like you should always get basically the same amount of pieces, mostly from bosses and a few here and there from stages, and what shot type you use should only affect how easy certain bosses are (for example, Reisen making Sagume trivial). I know you get a relatively high amount of lives, but for the difficulty of the game, it seems proportionate.

Remember that you get a lifepiece everytime you graze over 200 bullets and destroy at least 85% or so of the enemies per chapter. Is not a random ammount
You can exploit lifepieces with Sanae's bomb because when you use it you can still graze the bullets in the whole duration of the bomb. What's more, when you come in direct contact with a bullet while bombing you get much more graze points than doing it normally, not to mention that since you are bombing you are destroying enemies so you don't have to worry about the porcentage of enemies destroyed.
The same can be done with Reisen with a lesser extent and even though her bomb doesn't do any damage her piercing shot type is very useful for reaching the minimal porcentage.

Forgot to mention that the amount of bullets you need to graze is tied with the amounts of enemies you destroy.
For example, if you only destroy 50% of the enemies, you need to graze over 350 bullets to get the lifepiece. Lunatic and hard gives you a lot of bullets to graze so even if you don't destroy that many enemies you can still salvage the lifepiece, however this is not as manageable in normal.

Ah, okay, I forgot what Sanae's bomb was like. And yes, I'm aware of the calculation; [graze]*[% shot down]*[50], and over a million gets you a piece, so the minimum requirement is 200 graze with 100% shot down. Without such bomb exploits, there are only certain stage chapters in which that's feasible.

Anyway, Reisen seems to be the most reliable character. I've come very close to clearing with her, but need to practice beating Clownpiece without wasting all my lives.

If we're talking about len'en then there's no real threat the 2hu stg thread is gonna devolve to len'en stg thread simply because it has little fans following it, mostly coming from the 2hu fanbase itself. This should really go with other 2hu fangames stemming out from 2hu looks and mechanics.

If we're talking about cave well I can pretty much say caveplayers tend to steer clear away from these threads simply because they hate the fanbase's guts. I'm sure I was told there is a general for shmups in /vr/ and cave is among them.

The biggest problem I have with all of the games is not the amount of bullets, not streaming and not the spell cards. I do, however, have a huge problem of being a greedy fucker. And this problem doesn't seem to go away as I keep playing and training.
So I'm here to ask, what games are forgiving if you miss some life/bomb pieces or resources in general and what games aren't?

What exactly are you saying, that you try to auto-collect too much and get killed?

Regardless, to answer your question:

8 is usually considered easy-modo because of how many lives and bombs you get.

10 and 11 use your power for bombing, instead of a separate counter, so 'bombs' are a lot more plentiful. However, while you can gain lives by scoring and from drops in 10, you have to collect pieces from bosses in 11, making it hard to gain lives if you can't reliably capture spells.

12 has the UFO mechanic, which is very unforgiving.

13 has the trance mechanic, as well as a fairly traditional system for gaining lives and bombs (pieces dropped from bosses and certain enemies), which gives quite a bit of leeway.

14 makes it very easy to gain pieces, once you learn the best techniques, but you do have to pay a lot of attention to resource management. And since it's built around auto-collecting, you might have a hard time.

To sum up, I'd recommend you try 8, 10, or 13.

Any idea what pad they use? I'd hate to switch to keyboard after playing with a pad so long, but I feel like the one I currently use (Logitech F310) is starting to hold me back now that I've gotten to the point of going for LNB runs. After a while the d-pad starts to wear down due to the intensity that I use it, and I end up going through one every month or two. Though that's probably partly due to Logitech not going for very good build quality. I also feel anxious about potentially having more difficulty hitting diagonals compared to keyboard users. Nothing aggravates me more than misses due to execution errors as opposed to things like poor routing/memorization/reading.
