Why? For what purpose would you resample? Usually they use completely shit resamplers too. This isn't opus, mp3s support 44.1Khz, why are they making everything sound so shit? 48Khz mp3s shouldn't even exists as most encoders just do a hard cutoff and the extra samplerate does fuck all since you can't use a less steep low pass filter.

You need 40khz of samples in order to store 20khz frequencies.

A sine wave needs to fully turn on and off in a single cycle. Hz is those cycles, per second. 20k cycles per second requires 40k samples to store both the ups and downs. If you try to store above 21k cycles information in 40k of samples, you get aliasing.

Thats unfortunate, because when I went to filter all my 48000k sample rate songs ( I have 2600 out of 53000, please kill me), more than 3/4 are from labels that released free albums (and thus not the source sound) that I batch downloaded in the past. A lot of stuff from soundcloud (legit download links not 128kbs ripped shit) are somehow in 48k, and lots of bandcamp stuff thats in high bitrate (2000kbs+) are at 48k, which seems normal for that at least.

It's not a bad sample rate, it's only an issue when someone takes something that was 44.1k and they resample to 48k. This includes CDs, but online downloads or free albums released on the internet might have been 48k initially, so it's not a problem.

There is literally nothing wrong with resampling using a competent resampler. There exist mathematically perfect resampling functions for audio.

Actually, I must disagree. At high frequencies, you lose a lot of resolution.

Here's 3 different 16000Hz (within audible range) sine waves in Audacity, at various sampling rates. As you can see, the first is a triangle wave due to sampling limitations, the second is effectively a trapezoid, and the last is an approximate sinusoid.

Anyway to prove my point here's the previous 3 audio files, all put together in a single audio file, with 192, 96, the 48k in order, in a spectrogram.

You can see that as the sample rate decreases the harmonics increase.

Does this really matter? Probably not. Can you hear the difference? Probably not.

Set your resample qualities to max in Preferences->Quality, then Tracks->Resample just the 48000hz track to 384000hz. Then switch the track to spectrogram view. 44.1 and 48 are both good sample rates, but poor re-sampling between them can harm audio quality. Also there is literally no reason to convert CD audio to 48 - if your conversion is good, no new audio information will be added. All you'll gain is some bloat in your lossless files.

For CD->mp3, you should ALWAYS use 44.1.

MP3 is a special case. Though it retains the sample rate from the original stream, it must represent each sample with less data, giving it a variable bit depth. The more samples for a given bitrate, the less bits assigned to each sample. This increases quantization noise.

As a result, the noise floor of a 48 khz mp3 is higher (worse) than a 44.1. With very low bitrates you can even get higher quality with a lower sample rate, since you will get less quantization artifacts at the price of high-frequency content.
