Found someone's daughter locked up in a glass box in Akihabara
>>
Person from the last thread who was buying their first doll reporting back. Wound up buying the Illiya. Very happy that I bought a doll, especially after having seen the Akiba dd showroom (and the azone one because it's under it, though less impressive.). At 145k all in and some fairly bad black stains on the schoolgirl set stockings I'm still not completely sure I wouldn't have been happier spending the extra 100k on other doll stuff but either way I'm still overall happy I took the plunge. Thanks to various anons for the advice.
>>
How do you explain your dolls to guests?

Serious question.
>>
>>14539786
Congrats, anon! Post pictures, we'd love to see your new family member!

Also, are the stains right on the stockings themselves (not the doll)? If so, you can try bleaching those out. If worst comes to worst, replacing socks like those shouldn't be too hard.

Thankfully just on the stockings and yeah my thought was they'd be fairly replaceable if I have to. The doll is still sealed (nib) and I plan to keep it that way till I get back to my home country. I'm a little time limited right now but I'll post a potato picture of the box in a minute.

The one time I brought a girl home and she saw the doll collection (2 at the time), she was intimidated by them.

The dolls were in an expensive glass cabinet with lights installed inside and wearing well made clothing. They looked like expensive collectible/art.

She actually complained that the dolls made her uncomfortable since they represent an unrealistic standard of beauty for a regular woman to measure up against. I thought that was funny since the girl had a thing for Leonardo DeCaprio and would mention him frequently in our everyday conversation.
>>
>>14539826
I believe congratulations are in order, Illya is a cutie. I've wanted a MDD for a while but haven't gotten around to getting one.
>>

>unrealistic standard of beauty
There is literally nothing more annoying than hearing this.

If dolls, drawings, games, whatever, makes you upset about your body maybe the problem isn't everything else maybe the problem is you. If someone looks at a doll and thinks, "Wow, this makes me feel fat" then maybe problem isn't the fucking doll.
>>
>>14540363
it's a very silly thing to feel uncomfortable about; nobody expects people to look like dolls.

Funny thing is Leonardo DeCaprio is an unreasonable standard of beauty for men, but it never bugged me that much when she talked about him.

I thought her complaints toward the dolls were silly especially in contrast to her thing for Leonardo. It actually raised a red flag for me. Other stuff happened that raised more flags for me down the road and I eventually broke up with the girl.

/toy/ here. I'm a female who owns DD's. The concept that they would make me uncomfortable with my looks is ridiculous. Obviously I'm not jealous of what my anime figs and dolls look like. That just sounds so crazy. What's next? Avoiding all media and any shops that have pictures of models in clothing?

>>14541367
I dunno. The fatness certainly doesn't help but it's not the worst part by a long shot.
>>
>>14541330

I don't get it, what's so bad about this guy compared to others?

I guess its a combination of him not being a good photographer, not being very good at wig care, not being that great at posing and living in a mess? Just don't do those things and it'll be fine.
>>
>>14541433
>what's so bad about this guy

I see you haven't delved too deeply into his photo stories.
>>
>>14541433
>i guess its a combination

Not quite. The bad photography/lack of camera gear is a non-issue except to a few sperglords and entirely excusable. The wig care is a minor note - someone who has been in the hobby this long should know better. Posing is the same, not a big deal but noticeable nonetheless. What upsets me is the squallor the dolls have to live in, the fact he feels no shame showing his mess to the world; and that nobody seems to be calling him out on it in that little hugbox of his.

I am scared because this guy is me in a lot of ways and I'm not so far removed from him thst it's impossible for me to end up there. I'm far too emotionally invested in my dolls for what a middle-aged building labourer should be.

Someone needs to give him the hard knocks he needs to get his shit sorted out and become someone who takes pride in himself.
>>
>>14541433
I'm guessing it's because of posts like this:

>the squallor the dolls have to live in

Pretty much this. My place isn't exactly neat and organized, but the area where my girls are is.
>>
>>14541536

Same. My house is old and my furniture is all hand-me-down but my dolls live in a shiny new glass rape dungeon.
>>
I am mad.
>>
>>14541442

You're right, I haven't. I looked at his latest couple of posts and didn't feel inspired to look further.

>>14541515

Oh wow that escalated fast.

I mean that would almost be sweet if it was photographed and staged better and if he looked more presentable. As it stands I can't get it out of my mind she's going to get fucked later in a pile of rubbish.

I live in a small place an have a fairly large collection. I don't know what I'd do if my place ended up in that kind of mess. Not that its spotless but the clutter is at least organized.

Just let it be a lesson to not make those same mistakes. Its good to be self-aware about these things.
>>
>>14540544

Sometimes the dolls make me feel fat but that's because I legitimately have a weight problem. It has nothing to do with the dolls. It was never a problem when I was a healthy weight. >>14540363 is spot on.

>>
>>14541832
I wonder why he changed. It's not like people were leaving him discouraging comments on his crazier and more perverted posts.
>>
>>14541907

Might be just part of getting older, I've seen one or two posts where the guy was writing stories where he's the father to his MDDs. So I guess in a way he's progressing through life?

One thing I don't really get is that a lot of his dolls have either the default faces or customs like pic related. Instead of having 8 dolls like that why not have just 3 or 4, and spend the extra money on really good faces and dresses?

Just curious, but what do you see your dolls as? For me they seem to be almost like pets.

I can look at them and kind of feel a sentient presence from them because they're made to look humanoid, and it's comforting. But they're convenient since they don't require food, too much special care nor do they poop.

Other than that they also feel like fancy big toys that I do dumb things with, like photography or placing them in stupid poses.
>>
>owning dolls
>not also owning profession photography equipment

I seriously hope no one here does this.
>>

I don't take many pictures, so I'm more inclined to spend that money on doll things.

Not having lighting equipment is probably a big reason for why I don't take many pictures, though.
>>
>>14542518

Sort of as ignorance-tolerant pets, sort of the daughters I'll never have. Sort of a life motivator (better keep the house clean for my dolls, oh man this job sucks but if I hold out I can buy her that new dress I want); an interesting and captivating/terrorising house decoration, cuddle toys, hair brushing practice, something to talk at (like the "cat/dog mode" people get) without it judging me; something to focus my prductivity, creativity and energy towards. A reason to get out of bed in the morning. Non-professional interaction with the fairer sex?

My fake cuntstomer service personality is ace but it's nice to come home to something I can be a weirdo around without repercussion.

I read that the mother is dead, but did not know about the jewelry thing. That does make me feel bad as well. Another thing is that a picture of him from 2013 showed a slightly chubby but ok guy, whereas recent pictures showed a much heavier man with much thicker arms, double chins who is also less well kept.

It seems the guy started working around 2013 and the work has taken a toll on him. He's purchased 17+ dolls since 2013 and it seems like a response to stress. I can sympathize with that a bit since my work has also made me stress and overspend. Oh well, wish him luck and happiness I guess.
>>
>>14545497
He's more like us than I thought. Dolls are probably one of the few things that keep him happy and busy. And as weird and creepy as his photostories are, he's not hurting anyone with them.

Its true that the photography and dollfagging hobbies have a ton of overlap, but not everyone who likes dolls has a fancy camera and a light box.

I'm just not into photography - never have been. I love dolls though. I can only post pictures that I take on weekend mornings when the sun is out (which isn't often here).

Why spend money on camera stuff when that money can go towards doll clothes?
>>

Photography will get you involved with the community easier. But if you don't care about that it doesn't matter. I'm hopeless at doll photography, just don't have the space, but I still enjoy my dolls.

What still confuse me is why they can't make a material for dolls that do not absorb dyes like sponges. It seems like we really should be that far into the future that we can make dolls wear clothes without creating a mess.

Why is dye seemingly such a problem? Are you unable to soak the clothes until they stop releasing excess dyes?

It's not that serious of an issue, don't let people's overreaction freak you out. If you leave your doll on a shelf that's right in direct sunlight every day, then that's a problem. The process is so slow (and happens naturally, btw - UV light just speeds the rate of chemical reaction) that it would take about 10-12 years for you to REALLY notice.

I know customs can look very nice. But getting to that point either means assembling a custom doll or breaking the identity of a character doll. Not to mention that shopping for matching clothes is just as cumbersome as shopping for my own clothes.

Also, displaying character dolls as-is prevents the vicious circle of
>buy clothes
>have spares
>buy another doll for spare outfits
>buy clothes for new doll
etc. etc.

Not that guy, but there is a huge stigma in the BJD community of "shoeless dolls with frazzled mohair wigs and sharpie faceups" or "collectors with 20 dolls, half naked, the other shoeless." The only thing that comes to my mind is resin inflexibility (DDs have that soft bust thing) and the fact that it's harder to cast hollow, but come on, if you design it properly it can't be that hard to make it possible to insert
>>
>>14573436
I think the issue is that resin can shatter if stressed too much. Resin dolls will break fingers/chip if dropped on a hard surface from too high. An internal skeleton would require parts that can be removed (like the DD arms and legs), and the inserting of pieces into other pieces would not be a good idea. Vinyl is more flexible so this can be done, but with resin I could see it being an absolute nightmare.

I traveled all the way to Japan to an obscure shopping mall that was about an hour and a half train ride from Tokyo to buy one of these Peanut cat plushies that all the Japanese doll photographers have, only to find out that the character has grown arms and legs and looks pretty stupid compared to the older, proper peanut-shaped type :<

Oh well, at least Azone shop yielded some nice clothes loot and also picked up a new girl from Volks.
>>
>>14574320

What good doll clothes stores do you know in or around Tokyo? I've been to all the well known ones, Volks, Azone and Mandarake, but there must be some other good places?

I'm off there again in a few months so I'm starting to plan my shopping trips.

Don't know if there's much else besides those - it's always a good idea to check all the shops that sell pre-owned (usually though unused) items, I found some Azone 50cm clothes at those for slightly cheaper than original retail price. Resin is also way heavier. Your skeleton would have to bear a lot of weight. I do not own 1/3 resin dolls, because they are too heavy. I can't physically handle dealing with such a large and heavy doll.
>>
>>14578427
Do you have problems with your health? I didn't think resin dolls were incredibly heavy.
>>
>>14578459
1/3 resin dolls are somewhat cumbersome to handle if you're doing a lot of playing/posing. Your standard 1/3 resin doll is going to be at least a few lbs. It's not heavy by any means, but it's certainly not light by "toy standards."
>>
>>14578609
it's probably the kind of thing you don't understand until you have one, but i think i get it.
>>
>>14578609

They are, and if you are posing them a lot or carrying them a lot it can be a pain. It's just not something I like personally, but I say that having owned Volks SD boys. Volks has pretty heavy resin. Who knows if I would feel different about a different brand.

Also no health problems but 61cm is about 2/5th the size of me. My DDs are about as long as my torso.
>>

I just got back from a trip myself. I'd suggest it's worth taking a look around jungle (same side of akiba as mandarake). It's a relatively small store but for it's size it has a hell of a lot of doll stuff considering it's not a doll store. It's hard to count clothes but in terms of DD bodies were talking at least twice as many as mandrake (conservatively). There's also a nice aftermarket doll store in Ikebukuro that I wish I could remember the name of to give you. It's about 6 floors up and has signage on the side of the building. It had little (doll size) baskets of loose sorted clothes along with various sets and bodies.

Perfumes contain oils, which is bad for plastics. If you want your doll to have a particular smell though, you can put the perfume on a scrap of fabric or a cotton ball and put it in something like a tea ball (like $2 for a metal one at Walmart) or even half of a toy capsule from a machine and pop it in their head. As long as the perfume isn't directly touching their clothing, hair, or vinyl you're fine.

Lashinbang on the 4th floor of the Animate building in Ikebukuro has a couple of dresses and dolls.

Closet Child Ikebukuro used to have doll clothes but last I checked they stopped carrying them.

Mandarake in Nakano has some DDs for sale too. Last I went, there was a Rise for over 110 k.

In addition to what was mentioned in Akiba, Lashinbang (also in the Animate Akiba building) has dolls and some clothes.

I think of them more as basically paralyzed humans that don't actually mind just watching me do stuff all day.
>>
>>14598940
>>14599981
These both seem reasonable to me. I guess it's more when I see people talk about them almost like the toys from toy story that I get thrown.
>>
>>14599981
>don't actually mind just watching me do stuff all day

Do you let them watch you sleep?

Mine don't seem to mind me making an embarrasment out of myself trying to get /fit/. They probably don't yet realise it's so I can take family photos without bringing shame upon us.
>>
>>14595177
shit. I'm an idiot and left her hanging for too long and the rope stained her neck a bit.

This is abuse. I'm calling the doll protection committee.

That's rigor mortis dudebro. Congrats you just killed your cute little dollie.

Looking at all these lolis in these thread makes me regret getting a DDS body, now I want a MDD body
>>
>>14594989
>>14598717

Fucking hell. Looks like someone has some ludicrously cute and attractive dolls.
>>
>>14594989
So adorable! Posts like these are making me consider getting into the hobby as well. figurefag at the moment, but dolls are on the horizon.
>>
>>14600288

DDS body is plenty cute in its own right. Better proportions than the standard DD body which is a bit of a leg monster when naked. And not every head works on an MDD body.

>>14600328
>@LunuPointerEx on twitter

That is where I get all my images from.

Whatever you do don't enter any BJD communities outside 4chan. We may be a bunch of sperglords but we look after our own. Nearly every other sizeable community out there is highly cannibalistic and will happily tear you down just to feed themselves..
>>
>>14600598
can you recommend any entry level priced BJD for starters. The prices I've seen intimidate me, easily being four of my PVC girls. any tips? I've read the faqs and all that, but just some personal experience on the matter would be nice. seems like something expensive that can be easily messed up. Anything helps. Thanks.
>>
>>14600598
>don't enter any BJD communities outside 4chan.

Isn't DoA worth it though, for the marketplace?

I registered an account the other day, but it's going to take me years to actually post enough to get access to it. I'm not sure I should even bother.

Find a doll you like and save for it.

If you don't have a job this hobby isn't for you. 1k dollars is not at all unusual for a single doll and a basic wardrobe.

I would share photos of my slave collection but I plastered them all over the last edition and haven't taken any new ones yet.
>>
>>14600638
>1k dollars is not at all unusual for a single doll and a basic wardrobe.
Yeah, that sounds about right. I have one non-limited DD that I got in September, and my costs so far have been somewhere around $1500 CAD.

Dolls are my only vice these days, and I don't have friends, so pretty much all of my cash is going into this hobby.
>>
>>14600675
>>14600638
Wow. Thanks guys. well, guess ill save up or something and do more research. Thanks!
>>
>>14600675

Anybody else bad at converting yen without thinking about it? Like I do it on individual purchases just fine. At the same time I just thought to myself that both of these numbers seemed a bit high. Then I went, lets see 180k yen into dollars... oh crap.
>>
>>14600717
The yen and Canadian dollar was pretty nice when I started buying stuff from Japan. It was really close to 1 CAD = 100 JPY. Now everything costs like 25% more.

trudeau please save us
>>
>>14598929
>>14598940
Same. I would rank them somewhere between houseplant and hermit crab in terms of pets. I tend to my houseplants gingerly, but they don't need care all the time. The dolls need to be brushed and bought expensive things more often then the plants, who seem more content the less I fuss with them (until Spring when it's all "change my soil! re-pot me! feed me fertilizer! why didn't you prune me more last year!")
>>
>>14600616
1/6 scale Azones and Pullips are what many people use to test the waters before they buy a DD/MDD. They are ~$150 and require little to no out-of-box maintenance.
>>
>>14600288
Meanwhile I would have rather bought another DDS and regret my MDD
>>
>>14600058

The DPC ain't gonna do nothing. I beat my doll black and blue last time and all I had to do was hire a lawyer. Ended up with a slap on the wrist, and I went back to abusing her the same night.
>>
>>14601264
I wish I got a DDS instead of a DD.
>>
is it just me or are skirts that aren't miniskirts kind of hard to find?

Yes, near impossible! I've had some luck at YJA, see pic related, but they're very hard to come by even there. I have no idea why, maybe people don't buy them?
>>
>>14601985
I've tried to stay way from looking at clothes on there because it seems like the proxy fees would add up really quick.
>>
>>14602005
They do add up but there's a ton of cute clothes there that I've never seen anywhere else. If you do decide to venture to the dark side then I suggest using fromjapan as a proxy since they're relatively cheap and have pretty decent customer service.
>>
>>14602118
I probably might as well. I've already been browsing for heads daily.

Dollfie hands come in two sizes right? Yours look bigger than what I usually see.

Just an fyi for those of you who use potato phones for their pics (such as myself), invest ~$15 for an ebay special mobile phone tripod and set a delay on the camera. Fuzzy photos will be a thing of the past

Yah I use the large ver hands. I think they look better but I maybe the only one. As for useing a potato phone camera. It's because I am lazy and it is fast. I have better equipment.
>>
>>14604894
stop being a lazy git. or do you want to keep the nice sight in front of you to yourself?
>>
>>14604894
i'd like to have large hands for the purpose of holding some props better, but volks never has the gripping and sword holding hands in stock.

i've been tempted to buy them from a scalper but the markup is insane
>>
>>14604894
your doll seems to have a better lens than you do
>>
>>14605166
isn't it normal to give your dolls things that are nicer than yours?

This is fucking disgusting please stop posting shit like this.
>>
anybody know if a shoe with an inner length of 7.5 cm will fit well?
>>
>>14605262
Should be OK. 7 cm - 7.9 cm is the range for DD shoes. 7 cm is really pushing it though and not all shoes styles will fit.

One of my girls is wearing 7.5 cm oxfords from nine9style and they look wonderful.
>>
So how do the volks lotteries usually go? Vast interest so it is rare you win something, or medium interest so it is common you win somthing? And would I expect all the event goers to get lotted first and then have more success towards the end of the period?

I could be getting my first doll if RNG works.
>>
>>14605770
Volks doesn't release numbers so we don't know how many people enter and how many people win.

Likewise, we don't know how many people are entered at the Dolpa lottery and how many are slotted for the after event. You just have to enter and pray.
>>
So how many of you have a dollho?
Are they good?

>>14541360
>>
>>14606174
>>14606182
pretty sure they're both custom DDH-01s
>>
>>14606197
There seem to be a lot of heads like this though, similar in shape to the DDH-01 but with larger eyes and a flat lower face.
>>
>>14606266
they're just pretty common mods.
>>
>>14606323
I should learn how to do this then.
Been looking into getting a bjd for a while and buying a base model and buying extra wigs and such to make it what I want is pushing my budget. Was thinking about buying a base body and head, and putting it all together myself.
>>
>>14606333

I strongly recommend just buying a prepainted face or commission someone to do it. Doing a face well is something that takes a lot of practice and/or previous artistic experience.

You don't want to spend $600 bucks and end up with something like this >>14542087
>>
>>14606333
unless you have experience with drawing, painting, etc, that plan isn't gonna work.
>>
>>14606342
>>14606344
I'm a painter by trade, and I can carve wood. Point being I'm good with my hands. With some direction I'm sure I could figure it out.
>>
>>14606034

Is she still pure and eligible for marriage? This is very important.
>>
>>14606350
what research have you done already? we might be able to fill in any gaps. the thread on /toy/ would be helpful, too.

if you haven't done any research yet, maybe consult some of the threads in den of angel's customization and maintenance subforum first.
>>
>>14606386
Watched some face up vids on YouTube. It seems like just the kind of neurotic shit I'd be into. No idea how to mod the shape though.

I definitely still need to do more research, but my heart is set on this as a project for now.
>>
>>14606401
how is it neurotic?
>>
>>14606409
It's just very small, delicate work
>>
>>14606423
i see.

anyway, modding the head shape just uses tools like sandpaper, exacto knives, dremels, stuff like that. there are tools specifically for properly bevelling the eyesockets so eyes can fit, though.
>>
>>14606439
>sandpaper, exacto knives, dremels, stuff like that
I expected it to be more complicated than that
>>
>>14606452
well, getting it to look good can take some time, but yeah it's not too complex.

in the end dd's are just plastic.
>>
>>14606158
Prolly around $450 depending on how complete someone wants her.
>>
>>14607219

No... Noooooo!
>>
>>14607267

A-all the talk we had in these threads of little girl bondage and abuse were just ironic, r-right, right?
