Hello frens, please share your experiences about otaku culture in the 1990s. I have been researching this matter and found very little information through the internet, so I find it pertinent to make a thread to share things about it. The first thing I would like to ask is in regards to obtaining material. Starting with visual novels and dating simulators. How did you get them back then? Surely it wasn't as easy as today, so how? Did you have to travel to Japan and buy them on a physical store? What shipping mechanisms were there (if any)? Another question I have refers to anime. Did Japan have the equivalent of Block Buster but exclusively for animation? Say I wanted to buy videotapes of a raw 80s anime, all episodes. Would that be possible? And finally, dakimakuras. I heard they started being a thing at that point of time, so how would you acquire them? In summary, let us pretend I was a clearly underage kid in that lost decade, would Japanese media retailers sell adult content to a gaijin kid? Yes, no? If no, how could I get around it? If there is anything you'd like to talk about but wasn't asked please go ahead. Thank you for contributing to this thread in advance.

Hey all, I am writing a short story series in 'episodes' akin to an anime which has been heavily inspired by /jp/ and I would like to do a bit more research. Can anyone recommend any light novels that cover not only Otaku culture but involve say Kaiju or just anime/manga elements? Preferably in a semi action/comedy style, maybe a dash of romantic shiz for good measure.

Please give suggestions (and links if they are online) and if others have read it tell us what you thought, thanks!

News:
-Fumizuki Kai 2 has been implemented. Doesn't require the blueprint.
-The June ranking rewards have been distributed, of which 2 were the carrier operated Swordfish and Swordfish Mk.II (Skilled).
-The Summer 2017 event has been announced to begin on August 10 and it will be a large scale "what if" operation taking place in the west. The event name (tentative) is 西方打通！欧州救援作戦 (Break Through to the West! European Relief Operation). Among the new ships will be a Japanese DD and a BB of unknown origin. A new foreign sub may also be implemented.
-Ark Royal is confirmed to be implemented in the Summer event.
-New and returning Summer sprites have been implemented for Commandant Teste, also limited time Zuiun Festival clothes for Hayasui, Akashi and Ooyodo and yukata sprites. Etorofu Kai now has new, permanent art.
-Zuiun mode time-limited CGs: : Fusou and Yamashiro
-Yukata mode time-limited CGs: Fujinami, Asashimo, Ayanami, Shikinami, Furutaka
-Fried rice mode time-limited CGs: Naganami
-Swimsuit mode time-limited CGs: Mogami, Mikuma, Umikaze
-Sendai Kai 2 received an HP buff, Jintsuu Kai 2 an HP and Firepower buff and also has new hourly lines at Kai 2 remodel.
-5 new quests have been added, one of which is a quarterly and another that rewards the new Combat Rations (Special Onigiri).
-Combat Rations can now be improved into Combat Rations (Special Onigiri). Additionally, all consumable food items now have their morale boosting effects increased further.
-Two new quests: "Reorganize the Elite 22th Destroyer Squadron!" and "Sortie the Elite 22th Destroyer Squadron!"
-The number of ship and equipment slots has been increased by 10 and 40 respectively.
-The maximum level is increased from 155 to 165.
-A Kai 2 is planned for Saratoga this midsummer. At least one BB and one CL will also get a second remodel.
-The 5th year of KanColle will see something "interesting" regarding foreign ships.
-New Akizuki and Matsu-class destroyers are under plans to be added.
