This. In the late 1700s we could've become french and probably qould have voted for it, had they not been total dicks with their occupation. In the end it was for the better. Now we're a prosperous area in the middle of the Blue Banana, had we become French, we'd be a provincial shithole now because of the high distance to centralised Paris

Well they did introduce some things popular in the general population, like abolishing huge nobility and church possessions and redistributing it to citizens, also some basic ideas of democracy in the first years (1792/93) - this was better than the clusterfucked monarchies back then. Of course later on they became more centralist/imperialistic again, especially with Napoleone, so this turned us off again
