The good version (with clarkson) is not about cars really, its about the three hosts being awesome. Cars is sort of.. the pretext.

You dont have to really give a shit about cars to enjoy it, just fast forward through the car reviews (or watch them, clarkson will make you like cars).

The other versions are actual car shows and thats why they dont do as well.

Jeremy clarkson is a huge dick and it's hilarious to watch.
May is himself and the little rat playa the hype kiddo with withened teeth that's supposed to contradict clarkson's old conservative views.
It's a bit scripted but it flows well, cars are merely mentioned and more of a pretext for stupid races and jokes about old peoples in caravan.
Also clarkson is politically incorrect (he got fired for racists comments) and hear him rant about the bloody hippies and drive a mobstertruck running on coal to give them the finger is actually very funny.
