Libya's old green flag was honestly pretty cool, it stood out easily

tee bee aych haiti has the worst national flag atm IMO. The white field on the flat red and blue looks like it was just dropped and saved in MSPaint.

I don't even agree that the old Libya flag is terrible. It was simple, unmistakable, and instantly recognizable. Now I confuse the current Libya flag with the other Arab/regional flags.

Still, I don't think that any of the national flags are a total, obvious "FAIL". Even the Haiti flag is just a "D". Even a Gambia sits down and comes up with a banner they like, that doesn't have huge letters anywhere. The national flag is just too important and pretty much all countries know not to screw it up, or at least pick a safe design.

Truly hideous flags are the stuff of state/local flags, as has been posted already.

It is kind of gaudy & vulgar, but I think it more than makes up for it in sheer recognizability & potential for derivatives.

You can literally have any arrangement or red & white stripes, and white stars on blue background, and people will automatically think "USA", the shape of the flag isn't even needed. Compare that to the French flag, where you pretty much *need* to have the colors in order for it not to be confused with something else.
