He appointed the Patriarch of Constantinople Gennadius Scholarius, whom he protected and whose status he elevated into leader of all the Eastern Orthodox Christians. As Emperor of Rome he laid claim to all Roman territories, which at the time before the Fall of Constantinople.

Pope thought about sending him a letter to invite him to Christianity. In this letter he promised to recognize his claims and make him the emperor of the western empire as well. But then he thought that Mehmed would never accept this invitation and did not send the letter to Mehmed. So the monarchs of the Ottoman Dynasty were also the Roman Empires.
