The US program was really always ahead of the Soviet program except in terms of lift capacity which we were behind until the mid-60s. And anyway, that was more just because of dumb luck in that the Soviets had to build a huge, oversized ICBM because they could not miniaturize nuclear warhead components like the US could, so until 1965, the R-7 was bigger and more powerful than anything in the US rocket fleet.

Weren't your spacecraft still using vacuum tube electronics until the 80s? You also couldn't produce big solid rocket motors like the Titan family used and didn't have LOX/LH2 engines until the 80s. No spacecraft with fuel cells either. And then outer planet probes like Voyager...fuggedaboutit.

Producing something like the Saturn F-1 engine was also beyond the ability of Soviet metallurgy and even in the 80s, they still had to use clusters of smaller engines to power the Zenit family because they still could not solve the problem of combustion instability in large LOX/RP-1 engines.

>Weren't your spacecraft still using vacuum tube electronics until the 80s
Yep. And they were powered by steam engines.
>And then outer planet probes like Voyager...fuggedaboutit
Yeah, sending probes is the pinnacle of rocket science. No one can do that. Except anyone with a working rocket.
>>
>>53990544
>Producing something like the Saturn F-1 engine was also beyond the ability of Soviet metallurgy

Actually that was why Chelomei wanted to build the UR-700 booster as the Soviet answer to the Saturn V, however Korolev rejected the idea because he had a phobia of rockets with hypergolic propellants. Instead, he countered with the N-1 which had LOX/kerosene propellant but had to use 30 small engines, an unworkable mess.
>>
>>53991055
>Yeah, sending probes is the pinnacle of rocket science. No one can do that. Except anyone with a working rocket

Then why did you never try it? Oh right, didn't have the technical capability for sending probes to the outer planets.

>>53991038
Even Mars was apparently too much for you.
>>
>>53991164
The Soviet program had a lot of problems especially because many of the designers had old feuds with each other going back to the 1930s. Korolev in particular hated Glushko and others for having denounced him to the NKVD and gotten him sent to the gulag for years. So they didn't get along and had a hard time working together.
>>
>>53991232
I think he underestimates how difficult getting to Mars actually is. It's cold and the distance is long; many probes have been lost out there. The Soviet program was apparently never able to build a spacecraft bus tough enough to survive the trek.
>>
>>53991397

I bet he did, nobody can do that, only glorious america, and THE POO NATION.

http://www.space.com/topics/india-mars-orbiter-mission/
>>
>>53991397
Eh, kind of. But then again, they were also severely underbudgeted compared with NASA and also faced extensive political pressure to launch unready spacecraft. Interviews with Soviet engineers since the 90s have had a lot of them admitting "We really pretty much knew the Mars probes wouldn't work, but the Kremlin pressured us to fly them anyway to beat the US."
>>
>>53991505
>>53991397
Yeah...it's notable how much more successful the Soviet Venus program was, but it could be partially explained by shorter distance (Venus is half as far from Earth as Mars is) and much warmer temperatures.
>>
>All this Russian butthurt that they were cucked in space
>>
>>53991576
Of course, while the Soviets launched the first Venus probe (Venera 1), it failed in-flight and the first one to actually succeed was Mariner 2.
>>
>>53991232
>Then why did you never try it?
Because there is no point. The scientific value of the Voyager program is 0. 40 years later we finally know that no, there isn't an invisible wall at the edge of our solar system. What joy.
>didn't have the technical capability for sending probes to the outer planets
Those pesky rockets, how do they work.

>>
>>53991511
"In the spring of 1971, the US and USSR were in a race to the Red Planet. The Soviet probes were a magnitude more ambitious than Mariner 9. While NASA's effort was merely an orbiter, Mars 2-3 consisted of both orbiters and a lander which would touch down and take photographs from the surface. The landers even included a small rover which would operate tethered to the main landing bus."

"As the armada of probes approached Mars, a huge dust storm engulfed the planet. For NASA, this was no issue as they merely kept Mariner 9 on standby until the clouds subsided and they could begin taking pictures. The Soviet team could not do this with their probes as there was no way to reprogram the computers from the ground. Thus, they automatically started taking pictures of dust as soon as they reached Martian orbit, wasting valuable attitude control gas in the process."

"Mars 2 dropped its lander into the dust clouds swirling around Mars, but about a minute before touchdown would have been achieved, all signals from the probe ceased. It is thought to have crashed into the surface."

"Mars 3's lander successfully made a soft landing, the first manmade object to reach the surface of Mars. However, the probe transmitted data for a mere 15 seconds before contact was lost. One partial TV transmission was received that vaguely resembles the Martian surface and horizon, but engineers concluded that it was merely static and there was no actual image of anything there."

Mercury-Atlas assembly line at General Dynamics, November 1961. In front is the booster that will be used for John Glenn's launch in three months, next to it is the booster that will launch Scott Carpenter. Off to the right in a separate section of the plant are Atlas ICBMs.

It was quite a technical feat to go in eight years from launching astronauts on a barely reliable ICBM to the Apollo lands.

Maybe a bit too much of a technical feat for it to be true, don't you think?

In fact a good deal of the technology we use today was made possible by the race to the Moon, especially in terms of computers. The personal computer revolution of the 70s-80s would not have happened without the Apollo program.
>>
>>53999093
Manned vehicles required more safety features and attention to detail than unmanned ones. Only one day after Glenn's flight in February 1962, an Atlas missile test on he West Coast ended in an explosion only a minute after launch. In the early days, missile techs liked to joke that ICBM was short for "Inter County Ballistic Missile".

The early LOX/RP-1 fueled missiles were largely useless as part of a serious nuclear arsenal and by the middle of the decade were replaced by hypergolic and solid fueled models.

>lie about everything for the most part of your countrys existence
>expect people to take your claims seriously

Yeah yeah, best case scenario is you went to the moon but on ET's bike that crashed in Roswell
>>
>>53991164
To put it in more detail, Korolev disliked hypergolic propellants due to their toxicity and the Nedelin Catastrophe served to further heighten his prejudices. Chelomei argued that it was silly on the grounds that the US program was launching Gemini on the Titan II which used hypergolic propellant and they were not worried about the safety of that.

That Proton accident was found to have been the result of a disgruntled and woefully underpaid worker at the Khrunichev plant who purposely installed the guidance package upside down.
>>
>>54002714
They actually lost five Protons since 2010; an accident record approaching the good ol' days of the late 60s-early 70s. As things would have it, most of the tech expertise at Roscosmos is working on the Angara program and as Proton is set for retirement in a few years, likely only the low-tier bydlo are still assigned to them.

It is true that the US lost south Vietnam later on, but the US intervention in south Vietnam had led in the death of millions of insurgents and members of the NVA.
The US kicked ass. A ratio of 1:19 is bretty good.

Once the cease fire was brokered. The US withdrew. The war had become extremely unpopular at home. Once the US troops had left south vietnam, is when the North attacked.

Also, they attacked years after the US withdrawal.
You guys make it seem like the US lost the war throught vietnamese military superiority.

>>
>>53990303
Soviet designs and space tech was rushed as fucked. It was not superior.
You put a man in space after how many had perished in your trial and error to get a man up there.
The US did not lose a single person in space. There was an incident on nasa, but we didn't send our men on suicide missions to claim the first title.
