France as a country is honestly less relevant than both the USA and the UK. So your "France > Spain" argument also works against you. French is a useful language for sure, it's just not as useful as English is. Or I'd argue as useful as Spanish or Mandarin right now given the amount of speakers for those two, or even Japanese given their economy's size and exports in comparison. With the exception of various creoles, Canadian French (and to a certain extend, Cajun & Acadian) is the least understandable, since they were the most isolated from us.

That being said their accents can vary a lot - some Québeckers are very understandable for us, others are fucking impossible. Anne Dorval in the movie Mummy, for example, was atrocious, I actually needed subtitles, even though I can understand her normally in interviews. (I think she was supposed to do a particularly low-class Montréal accent)

African French is much closer to European French, since they were colonies not so long ago, and the educated people there still kinda look at Europe as a center of culture and alll that. That being said, they also have very strong accents sometimes, and often a tendency to speak in an overly formal French.
