Here, such a thing can only happen to pigs, which is why pork is generally recommended to be cooked thoroughly. Though the USDA recently dropped the recommended internal temperature for pork down to 145°, from 160°, because of better standards that have made worms a lot less likely, compared to decades ago.

The only steak house I eat at (which does not happen all that often) gives the option to choose which kind you want, with an annotation that the chef does not recommend choosing well done. The annotation is in bold and printed with large letters.
I personally usually go with medium, however I do know people that prefer well done for whatever reason. No, I don't understand it either.
Nobody cares what kind of steak you eat and it shouldn't be your business, there's so many other dishes that are better and more gourmand than a fucking shitty steak. I don't even remember the last time I had a steak.
I don't get it either. I'm not a pretentious fuck but I enjoy my meat medium rare and every time we make an asado I sneak and take my meat out before everyone else.
I guess people overcook for fear of tapeworms, since hygiene started on late 1800/early 1900, there's still people afraid of eating raw meat, ceviche or sushi.
Not to mention well done meat has more carcinogens so it's more likely to cause cancer.
I could see it being done as a preventive method. At least over here it's not going to get you sick unless the food is handled improperly. And even then you would probably get sick regardless.

I don't know from what sophisticated swedish little village you guys come from, but among my people, steak is still considered a delicacy. There's never arguing what's best, I like mine medium, others (mostly) rare or medium rare, because it's a meme choice (not that it's all "LOL RARE IS BEST XDD", but because it's just the thing you choose, like a real beer instead of a lemon juice ginger beer with a bit of virginity in it. Doesn't mean there aren't people who pick rare because they like it), I know one that eats blue rare, and some like well-done.

The better the meat is, the rawer you may eat it. Shit beef has to go all the way down to medium, while good beef can stay at rare; blue rare is reserved for the dankest of meme meats.
In restaurants I've had some good steaks, but my sister and mother both cook all meat until it is a completely dry mess. My former co-worker had the same issue with his gf. Hopefully one day it will be mandatory education in schools not to do this.
