Ok /int/ I want to learn another language so I figure I'd ask you guys.
Should I learn Russian or German ?
Do give reasons for why I should pick either one ok?
The languages I know are English and Romanes.
Learn German. The people are better mannered. Goethe is better than any author Russia shat out.
And frankly, it's better to preserve the German culture than it is the Russian 'culture'.
>it's better to preserve the German culture than it is the Russian 'culture'.
Russian is a lot more useful.
1. Russians don't speak English, but Germans do.
2. Knowing Russian is essential if you want to be an astronaut.
3. Russia has made some interesting movies, Germany hasn't done that since the thirties, when they were still silent.
4. There are Russian speakers in some parts of the US, and would therefore be more useful to you in day to day life... although still fairly useless.
If you want to learn a useful language, that also has a lot of fun cultural products, there is really only one alternative: Spanish.
Here is my personal ranking of languages that are no English by usefulness:
3. Arabic (unfortunately)
>any asian language is much more useful then russian. just trust me. i live here. i know what i am talking about
Chinese is the only one more useful than Russian, and it's comically difficult
Japanese and Russian are on around the same level of usefulness in my opinion. But I placed Japanese slightly higher because og their great entertainment industry.
And by "Chinese", I meant "Mandarin". I probably should have specified it, though. You're right. Yue would be fairly high up on the list of useful languages, too. Top 20, at least.
boy i really want to learn russian or any other european language frankly (other than spanish fuck that) it's just that i can't trill my r's
should i an hero or what
Well... they have a uvular trill, but not an alveolar one. I didn't know that it was also called trill. I thought it was just a guttoral r.
Still. Very different, and way easier.
No. You need Russian if you want to be an astronaut, as well, because you need to use Russian rockets to get to space.
I'm actually surprised by how many more official deaths there have been during American spaceflights than during Russian/Soviet ones.
>Even so, why is Italian not on the list? Italian corporations and mafia are quite spread out.
oh come on, Italian is not spread out at all, it's useful only in Italy.
honestly I put Russian above Japanese because
>muh more native speakers and geographical distribution
but all these countries speaking russian are fucking shitholes and no one really wants to go there
and there is so much fucking weaboos, it's everywhere, japanese is probably has the most resources to learn(except for english) because of these weaboos
awww come on komrade
russia is a pretty cool place to gain post apocalyptic experience, arts and crafts in banditry and become a real man or die trying.
It's a harsh social environment where boipussies and man children get devoured alive.
Yeah. I absolutely think someone here has the capabilities.
1. Technical background/military training (A master's degree or PhD in engineering or physics or some other decent science is probably required either way.)
2. Be proficient in English and Russian. (Last time the ESA hired, this wasn't even a requirement.)
3. Be a perfect specimen of human health
4. Have great social skills
There's probably something else. This doesn't seem so hard. I couldn't do it, but I am absolutely certain that there are several people on 4chan who could.
Russian as English are languages of international communication.
Pretty much in all ex-ussr countries and countries of Russian waves of migrations people still speak Russian. This is about 300mln people.
And English - about 700-800 users in the world.
So, you can easily communicate with ~ 1 bln white people knowing English and Russian.
Astronauts are like what the 99.999th percentile or something? How many people are there even on this website?
According to wikipedia there have only ever been like 500 astronauts.
Pushkin is great and the Russians have fantastic literature, but Goethe is like a German Shakespeare. I'd say maybe Doestoevsky or Pushkin could be put up with him. Maybe Lermontov for poetry
>Pretty much in all ex-ussr countries and countries of Russian waves of migrations people still speak Russian.
all these countries are fucking shitholes no one wants to go
and if you learn English and Mandarin you can speak with 1.8 billion people
I think only a small part of those who would qualify apply. If they had an intense desire to become an astronaut, I think a lot of people would be able to at least get through a few stages of the selection process.
No, you do not. The ESA has astronauts. You could apply the next time they have a hiring round. Everyone from an ESA member state can apply.
OP, Russian would be useful for you if you want to go to Russia (or any other ex-soviet shithole) for sex tourism. Seriously it's a great opportunity to have some fun for an american or western european.
cyrillic is not really "wrong" but it looks edgy and angular for me
>eastern slavs saying poles should use cyrillic

between all the rampant aids and other STD infested whores, psychopaths and other garbage which russia is crawling with I'd highly advise against going to russia for such degeneracy.
You'd catch something nasty that would be the death of you quick.
In russia you dont fuck, YOU GET FUCKED
you can move there today if you want, the native population growth is in decline, lots of unused clay to settle if you can develope it.
but it's not sweeden, no social benefits or gibsme dats., unless you are military or government connections.
Some of the locals can be a real pain in the ass and will try to kill you to take your shit.
but yeah, go for it.
And Russia doesn't have a shit situation, Germany is far more important than Russia especially in terms of being useful. Unless you want to travel to the shitholes inhabited by Russian speakers.
>lots of unused clay to settle if you can develope it.
No, you can't. Everything were privatized 20 years ago. Even if you were so lucky to buy something 40km away from nearest town, then you're will meet Russian bureaucracy with Reagan jokes like queues and enjoyment with approving every instantiations.
>Everything were privatized 20 years ago.
no not everything, there's more clay than people to go around who can effectively keep check of it.
you can live on someone's "privatised property" without them knowing your entire life. and not be bothered.
however it is risky
The most useful languages are (not including English)
#2 French or German
#1 French or German
For Aussies etc Mandarin and Japanese higher.
Mandarin is a meme language though i'd rate Korean/Japanese as better to learn because China is a shithole, this is also
well i wouldn't want to move there to grow crops. i was more thinking working a shitty job which i'm fine with and see the sights. experience a true russian winter and that.
a friend lived there for quite some time and really liked it but she's got a russian citizenship so i just thought that there might be problem getting into the country, landing a job/place to live/whatever you know.
French is literally the least useful language on either of your lists.
German is also pretty much entirely useless outside of Europe. It is in no way more useful than Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, Arabic or Portuguese.
Mary your Russian friend. Acquire citizenship.
>well i wouldn't want to move there to grow crops. i was more thinking working a shitty job.
I hope you got nerves and patience of steel and can take subhuman banter like a motherfucker, you will be discriminated and treated like shit most of the time within the subhuman elements you have in mind.
lol You'll want to kill yourself by the end of the year....and the winter will only compile this urge
personally, I just dont think you can hack it.champ
stay in sweeden and save your health
Based on what, your poor brain function?
French is useless on what measure? The French speaking European region is hugely important, the Francophone world is bigger than the Portugese speaking world and the French language is still hugely important for NGOs.
German is useless outside of Europe? Right so Japanese and Portugese are really worldly? Mandarin is barely used outside of a small region also. German world is objectively one of the most power economic areas in the world and actually functions properly unlike Russian/Arabic regions.
Not only that French / German are incredibly easy to learn relative to those other languages (probably about the same as Port).
Also note i say as a European. Unless you are planning on moving outside of Europe these are the main languages of this continent which makes them intrinsically useful to the people of this continent and the business's that inhabit it.
>Francophone world is bigger than the Portugese speaking world
>the French language is still hugely important for NGOs.
Which NGOs? The only one I can think of that has any kind of relevance on the world stage is MSF... and if you want to work in the African bush, pulling maggots out of the feet of starving Africans people, sure, go work for MSF.
>German is useless outside of Europe?
> Right so Japanese and Portugese are really worldly?
Portuguese is an official language on four continents, at leat. And Japan is a significantly larger and more important economy than Germany or France.
> Mandarin is barely used outside of a small region also.
Mandarin is barely used outside of one massive region that is as large as Europe by area, and larger than the entirety of Europe and North America combined by population.
> German world is objectively one of the most power economic areas [sic] in the world and actually functions properly unlike Russian/Arabic regions.
...and for this reason, everyone there speaks English already.
I have this dilemma too.
I already have basics in German so its easier
But learning a new alphabet might be fun.
I thought about Arabic, in case shit goes down but its too much of a hassle.
Chekhov my nigga
Russian culture is pretty alright. I've been to Moscow and St. Petersburg before, they're nice cities and the people are pretty polite contrary to what's said. They're just not as open as most Americans, which is what people in the US misconstrue as unfriendliness, I think.
