A gondola is many things to many people. I don't think there's any unified idea, everyone has their own belief of it.

To me, he's the observer. In art, he represents the viewer of it, the part which is unspoken but is a completely necessary aspect. Without it, art wouldn't exist.

This extends to when you see him in real situations as well. A beautiful natural landscape, or the mysteriousness of a city, they wouldn't mean anything without the observing character. They're just places that exist, but with the observer they become something more.

That's what Gondola is to me.

Unfortunately there's no translation for wishful or wistful in portuguese, although wistful seems to be similar to the portuguese saudade. When you have saudade you look at the past longing for it to come back, like when you're old and miss the golden days of your youth, or when you break up with your gf and remember the good times you spent with her wishing for her to come back. So i guess wistfulness is like that but with a bit of anxiety and/or regret, while saudade is usually more warm and nostalgic. idk

I wish people would stop depicting Gondolas in such wrong ways. Gondola is a lonely creature, personally I think there exists only 1 or very, very few, maybe a dozen. There are no Gondola big families, Gondola cities, there can't be a Gondola societies, because Gondola is the concept of the absence of interaction with the world, whilst society is interaction. Gondolas don't play football, Gondolas don't cosplay, Gondolas don't feel sad, or happy, or angry. The only feels a Gondola can feel is contentness, melanchony, or a feeling of being powerless. As said by many, he's the silent observer, destined (cursed?) to wander lands and places and witness all the wordly happenings without being able to change anything
