Police Academy here is a college degree, and it's actually hard to get in (about 8000 applicants for 500 spots/year). The pay is shit, but you won't find cops here who are fat, out of shape or who had shitty grades in high school.

And the academic prerequisites were raised at the same time, and the physical prerequisites were lowered only marginally (you need to demonstrate that you posses decent physicla strength, stamina and endurance, if you're out of shape you won't make it, simple as that).

If anything, due to the increase in academic reqs it's harder to get in than ever, even if the physical side of it has been lowered slightly (basically you get the equivalent of 30 seconds more for the run these days)

That I did know, here the police academy itself is an associates degree, and to get in you need to of course be eligable for college (this means a passing grade in enough shit to actually get a diploma as well as at least passing grades in all core subjects from hs), additionally they require a passing grade in "advanced" English and Swedish from hs (the reasoning seems to be to ensure all cops can communicate with people from abroad, immigrants and tourists and the like, as well as be proficient enough in Swedish to write a professional, concise and judicially satisfactory report).

Still, the starting salary for a Constable (the lowest rank) is like $2500/month. Then after 4 years you automatically get bumped to Senior Constable (there's no actual difference, but you get a bar/chevron on your shoulder board) you get bumped to like $2800/month. But shit, even the national chief of police only makes like $8700/month
