It's not though. I'm an exchange student and the people are very friendly here, but you have to speak Japanese or they'll be a bit too shy to talk to you. You also need to not be like Davido-kun.

It really depends on where you are.

I lived in Nara and people were nice, the same with Tokyo and other large cities.

Head out to smaller towns or rural areas and people fucking hate you, I can't even count the amount of times I walked in to a restaurant or bar and then had everyone stop and look at me with the "What the fuck are you doing here you filthy foreigner" while the staff treat me like shit.

Also in the workplace, they just don't trust you at all, many Japanese have a huge cultural inferiority complex and are distrustful of foreigners at best.

I know people here probably dislike him, but I think Ryan Boundless (Youtube personality) actually probably has the most accurate stories about what a standard life is like in Japan for a westerner especially when you get over the rose tinted glasses.

I enjoyed my time in Nara, but I would not want to live long term in Japan because it does have a hostile and stagnant culture.
