There are different types of oil, North Sea oil is one type and our industry needs various types. So,
We use some
We export some after extraction (crude oil)
We export some after refining it
And we import other types of refined oil
Overall, we import more oil than we export
In addition to diversity the other thing you've got to worry about is value. The best combination is diverse + high value exports.
So that's not as great as it first appears, as the yellow and green squares are pretty low-value product compared to, say, the pink and light blue squares.
I'm speaking in general of course. Computer monitors and jet engines would both appear in the blue squares, and jet engines are much more high value...
