>>
>>53268392
>how vocal are people in demanding the practice stops?
It varies. Most of the time objections are limited to grumbling and people are resigned to the practice not going away any time soon. Redistricting laws vary from state to state, but in general the it's in the hands of the legislature to change the rules for that sort of thing. Since the majorities of many state legislatures benefit from gerrymandering, it seems unlikely that they'd willingly destroy one of the systems that helps them out.

California is a notable exception, because they have a more populist 'Proposition' system in place which allows a measure to be proposed put on the general ballot by anyone, if they get enough petition support from voters (or if the legislature approves). Because of that, voters were able to go over the recalcitrant legislature and get their own anti-gerrymandering measure on the ballot, which then won in the vote.

While the measures passed did help break down some notoriously gerrymandered districts, they also really fucked over the Republicans in California and almost led to a Democratic Party supermajority in the legislature, so right now legislative opposition to anti-gerrymandering measures elsewhere in the country is stiffer than it used to be.

The US-Canadian border was set at a specific latitude (probably before the area was fully surveyed and someone realized that spit of land would be cut off) and damned if we'll cede one inch of land to the British after agreeing to that!

>Do they even have a police force there? Border checks?
Yep! Apparently there's an airport and some docks there, so Americans don't always have to drive through Canada to get to the rest of the US.
>>
>>53269075
I've read that high school students in Point Roberts opt to cross the border four times a day to get to school and back though.
So any ferry service should be rather expensive as compared to the cost of driving or something.

tbf, the US-Canadian border used to mostly just be a notional thing and no one gave a shit. It got a lot more locked up with checks and delays after 9/11 and even moreso after people started squawking hard about illegal immigration and the feds tightened border control both north and south in response.

A casual arrangement to just cross the border back and forth several times a day probably used to work just fine.

Quiet, calm, and no non-Europeans.
Honestly it's a weird situation as many conpanies don't want to try and have a branch here because of the weird laws.

It's sometimes a bitch because I pay twice taxes as a Dutchman compared to the Belgians. But then my eastern neighbour can't decorate his front or paint his door because of weird renting agreements while I can.

Taxes are determined by nationality and the country your front door is in, so that's a mess of paperwork.

The fact some of us have a different passport than their parents is fun too.

We're all Flemish here anyway, national distinction doesn't exist really.

The break of the Ottoman empire was the fall of the middle east. It was broken up poorly and people didn't know what to do. Then we took Isreal from it's people, and established fake governments like in Iran. Then it went majorly south when the oil crisis hit in the late 70s, and countries started revolutionizing.

Right now the biggest problem is the west has convinced itself Saudi Arabi and Turkey are on their side, when they are quite possibly the most destructive countries in the middle east. After this Saudi-Iran conflict we need to side with Iran, they are the most progressive middle eastern state. While the government hates us, the people are very western and love the west. If we cut trade with Saudi they will weaken considerably, we will lose this oil price crisis and Saudi will have less influence over the Middle east. The west trading freely with Iran might cause economic and social reform like the people want, we will get a powerful ally in the region, and no more Iran nuclear problem. The only problem is oil, Iran will have to start getting more oil. They are trying to increase oil production though.

The only problem is one could argue that the US is keeping Saudi in check you could say, and without US backing they may just say fuck it and cause disaster. They may strengthen ties with China which are already strong, but I don't think so. If Saudi keeps doing there funky oil shit China won't want apart of it, these artificial oil prices are effecting chinese economy already.

The moral of the story is Saudi government is literally North Korea tier but the west is too greedy to do anything because they think Saudi is developed and rich, when in reality many Saudis are poor but there are enough rich oil tycoons to make them seem rich.

You should see Austin Texas. Austin city proper is actually one of the most liberal cities in the US, even the suburbs are liberal for Texas standards. However the gerry mandering has made it look like pieces of pie, where the city has lots of districts that widen and extend out towards the ultra conservative boonies. It's pretty fucked up, but, and even though I identify as at least economically left, the Austin left doesn't know shit. The voters are young hipster college kids who don't know anything about real government and economics nor care. Neither do most right wingers but at least a right wing Texas capital will keep my beautiful Houston oil and bank money high even if they are retarded,
