"Le" means masculine, it's "la" that is feminine. Not that it's any less arbitrary though. I'd say the -er ending kinda forces the masculine though, because we have a similar ending (-eur) that is always masculine. And "beef" ("bœuf" in French) is masculine too.

It was yummy, but I couldn't find any decent fried chicken in all of Europe. They're devoid of it. They don't have any buffalo chicken. My Norwegian friend's eyes nearly fell out of her sockets when she saw chicken tenders, she had only ever known crappily fried nuggets.

Sad state of affairs in Europe.
