why overreaction family?
yeah no shit, is it crime to banter now ?
while my exclamation about Ramanuj was gleeful pride in my lineage , the response to the brit diaspora poster was literally another form of "lel you mad bro".
the worst part is that i have to explain it to you.
Not a shudra my man, my dad is a bania, but I think I have no caste becasue my mum isn't indian.
Being sceptical/dismissive about the caste system is an old Indian tradition 2bh.
If you'r gonna go that orthodox then yeah but then by that standard according to Garud Purana I will be roasted in hell because married a casteless woman which is akin to marrying an "ach-oot".
depends on the sect you follow which decides what scriptures have value and those that didn't.
We Shri Vaishnavs hold Vedas at the highest, puranas only Vishnu , Shesha and Garud are valid to us and then there's Shrimat Bhagwad.
basically Narayan's word's law, interpretations of it and anything pertaining to other deities is hogwash to us.
yeah i've been reading the vedas, i've not come across much to do with caste (there is a few things but a lot of the rules and systems about caste seem absent)
Not sure about the Upanishads.
it isn't, this general was called desi before the designated meme existed.
desi means local or native, or pertaining to the country (the country being south asia), its word for pan-south asian culture etc.
>we won 7 kabaddi world cups.
This is one of the worst Hindu scriptures imo. Had to sit through the recitation of the whole damn thing when one of my close relatives passed away.
It was just line after line of how the 'purush' will be tortured in the afterlife (aadmi roota bilakta vatarniya nadi ke par pahuchta hai) and how you should feed a brahmin every day and give gifts to bhramins (gifts like a cow). Also how you could land up in the demonland just for the smallest of mistakes or things which are out of your control. Like I remember the pandit saying how a man can land up in the demonland if he does not have a son.
Some real weird shit in that book.

Oh Yama please spare my gentle soul, don't throw me in the Vaitarna nadi.
I'm more worried about my mother. She used to beat me when I was a child. But I don't want a Yamdoot to beat her and step on her yoni.
Is he the most based politician right now in India .
I don't care what they build there. I just like the smug motherfucker.
The way he riles up so many people is gold.
There's still some hope. r-right buddy?
Are you white/black or desi? Is there a big desi community over there? I've read that things are pretty bad for the white folk there. Do the desi diaspora also face such racism?
Kya haal lalle?
i am white. about 2 million Indian people here.
>I've read that things are pretty bad for the white folk there.
nah its ok here. never been a victim of violent crime. nor has my friends or family.
Priyanka Chopra won best actress the Amrican People's Choice Awards.
I am a boer. crime is crazy here. just like in india and brazil. There is no genocide happening here.
we are having elections in may, the governing party is set to lose in all metropolitan areas except 2. They will not hand over power because they will then be prosecuted for corruption.
Shit is gonna happen in may in south africa.

What I've read about their Desi community is that they are overrepresented in percentage terms at all levels of government because they are considered Black and fought against Apartheid. I'm surprised they don't have more Hashim Amlas.
Nah bhai. I've had a crush on Priyanka for about 10 years now.
>They will not hand over power because they will then be prosecuted for corruption.
Can they do this shit in a democracy? What about the army who will they take orders from if such a situation arises?
Can we exchange?
Well, she's beautiful but hyped up a lot here.

BUT IN THE END
IT DOESN'T MATTER
Well, fuck you too bhenchod.
>i really hope people don't fall for hindutva though
Sadly that seems like the only viable option. Pacifism will not help against hardcore Islamists.
I'm a fedora tipper but if given a choice between right wing hindu dindus or the durkas, I'll take the dindus any day.
I've never seen one either. Don't they all live in Gujrat?
>are they cool?
>I'll take the dindus any day.
This. Nationalism is good for India, and secularism just gets us run over by the west and prevents reactions to islamism.
>Sadly that seems like the only viable option.
We can use our Secular identity against religious extemism, rather than using saffron religious extremism to counter green religious extremism
lol. so throw away all our culture for the western secularism which is killing it? religious extremism is bad, but secularism in India these days seems to mean distancing from the culture and traditions.
such a path can only lead to further westernization.
>so throw away all our culture for the western secularism which is killing it?
Sorry, but India is India, not Ram Rajya. That doesn't mean you personally can't do your Puja and wear a Tilak and avoid eating meat, fish, onions and garlic.
Westernisation will happen anyway, we're living in a globalised world, it's happening to every country. You don't have to support massacring muslims or trying to reconvert random muslims, to defend yourself against that, you should try to alter globalisation and westernisation to lead to a desirable ends, rather than being petty and fully agianst them
I'm not hindu nor are my parents, and hindutva isn't just for hindus. Westernization is nothing to support, its not petty in any way to be against it. Its rather defeatist to think that India can't be global and modern while retaining its traditional culture.
Never date Indian women.
>Bitchy, bitter, jealous idiots.
>Time for some classic punjabi tracks.
>Some Hindus who had previously been his friends and neighbours burned him with acid, castrated him and finally disembowelled him, with some of them wearing his intestines around their necks as garlands.
its such a broad concept, I mean what do you mean, do you want women to not wear jeans and to wear saris? the most popular sport in India is cricket, an english game is that westernisation?
I don't think we have to lose Indian culture whilst becoming global and modern, but I think you have to accept that some things are bound to change. Rather than resist, it is better to try to realign these changes in a benefical way that helps retain culture, than try to completely resist these changes.
>Hindutva isn't for hindus
I'm curious how does it benefit non-hindus?
see this is why I don't believe in Hindutva as a means of protecting India's culture.
Yes christians missionaries are bad, yes muslims can have a stupid attitude and some are responsible for some horrendous things, but this is no better.
Read more carefully. I never implied India is modern.
Those two things are rather superficial (though clothing choices do indicate attitudes towards foreigners to a degree). What matters more is the attitude of the people in daily life, and their values and morals. Indian culture has changed over the ages many times, but it has always retained the core of its dharma.
> I'm curious how does it benefit non-hindus?
You seem to be misinformed about hindutva. Go read about it first pls.
>'m curious how does it benefit non-hindus?
>You seem to be misinformed about hindutva. Go read about it first pls.
oh and provide me some things to read about it.
>always retained the core of its dharma
and I'm sure it will continue to even in the face of globalisation. Conservatives of all countries are just very jilted by the prospect of change and thing that the end of the status quo is necessarily an apocalypse. India's been constantly evolving, it won't ever lose its essence, its been under harsher challenges. I think India under globalisation will only blossom, both economically but also culturally.
>jilted by the prospect of change
I'm concerned for the type of change that it entails, rather. The change can be good, but westernization isn't the way. India needs to lets its culture evolve into the modern era on its own.
>read about it.
Just read wikipedia instead of assuming that hindutva = extremism.
It has in many subtle ways
I'm reading the vedas atm, once i'm done i'll do some upanishads
read schopenhauer before
I don't think it is westernising, i feel like that is alarmism, though I think we basically agree that change should be monitored and steered towards a certain result
>hindutva = extremism
I've read up on it (including the wikipedia), it seems strange to me.
The conflation of Indians with Hindus and its disdain towards other religious groups and their impact on India seems strange to me.
>hasn't undergone changes for millennia.
It has, in philosophy, mentality, and religion. Also various superficial things like food and dress. But you are right that it has changed less than other cultures, at least its core elements.
>I don't think it is westernising
60 years ago nightclubs, drinking, etc. were all quite low compared to now. That's all stuff that is not reconcilable with our dharma, and largely a western influence.
In hindutva literature, the word 'hindu' is used in a more correct context than it usually is. A hindu is one who is culturally Indian, I guess is the easiest way to say it.
to be honest I tihnk the biggest perversion of Dharma is not drinking or nightclubs but gaudy materialism which flies in the face of one of the most important messages in Dharma. However even the most pious and culturally Indian people I know seem to fall into this trap of materialism, completely exogenously of western influence or lack thereof.
contemplation is good.
seek fulfilment, rather than joy or avoiding misery.
fish and chips and then some nice indian food for dinner.
Sorry I was going to ask how you can measure someone has 'culturally Indian'
What makes one culturally Indian? India is a massively heterogenous country, with a myriad of religions, languages, cultures and so on. What objectively makes one a 'Hindu' according to Hindutva?
>Especially when it comes to disembowlment of non-hindus.
Violence is not part of Indian culture to be honest. Non-violence is the highest Dharma.
But violence to non-hindus is rooted in centuries (and very recent and persistent) of grievances caused by non-hindus. That is not a justification, just an aide to help you understand the phenomenon.
>but gaudy materialism
Drinking and nightclubs were just examples of western things which do not work with our culture. Materialism is a worse thing, but it is something less avoidable.
Nah, it's good, disregard memes. I regret I didn't choose a STEM major because it's been half a year since my graduation and I can't find a job. Essentially my only somewhat marketable skill is English but it's no use -- it is no more than an additional requirement and I haven't been successful with freelance translation.
There's quite a bit of thought already put into that. Besides, there is no point to measuring whether someone is culturally indian. The point of hindutva is to promote indian culture, not to find and persecute non-hindus or something.
I'm not even hindu. Also, Indian culture is quite against such violence; just because it happens doesn't mean its part of the traditions. Corruption is also a very common thing, but not linked to the core elements of the traditions.
Rate my empire. Despicable Aztecs attacked me and I had no choice but whipe them out of existence.
>not work with our culture
our Kings have seemed to enjoy drinking and sexually charged parties and so on before they became available to the masses. I personally don't have a problem with things other people choose to do, provided it does not infringe directly on me.
Materialism is the biggest thing I can think of, and its realy something all Indians, regardless of how culturally attuned or how religious they try to be, seem to fall for.
A good deal of hindutva supporters seem to be concerned with 'Akhand Bharat' or 'Ghar Vapsi'.
>no point to measuring whether someone is culturally indian
yes but what does it even mean to be culturally indian in the first place?
>promote indian culture
So doing what? telling people to not be materialistic and stop going to nightclubs? telling people to adopt sanskrit names? What if people don't adhere to your prescriptions?
good luck senpai. i had a couple of IR friends and most of them went on to do their masters after undergrad
the last two threads have been surprisingly free of shitposting
>i had a couple of IR friends and most of them went on to do their masters after undergrad
i'd also advise this, but mastesr can be expensive thoguh :(
>the last two threads have been surprisingly free of shitposting
the fact that this thread survived gives me hope. bit by bit we can regather the momenutm to make this a self-sustaining thread.

Just ignore them, deprive them of a response and they lose.
that hari chutney goes well with everything.
My brain always seems to be more alert when the sun is down. I should have been a Nepali.
Land ke tope
Wtf, got any links?
Not until you apologize for giving us Jon Oliver
unless you are actually just a shitposter yourself trying to attract more shitposters, which is probably the case since you're ignoring everyone who is telling you to stop posting.
civ 3 (i tihnk)
here is a different one
>seemed to enjoy drinking and sexually charged parties and so on
And that was criticized even at that time. Those with the ability to be immoral will generally do so. Nothing really more to say.
>what does it even mean to be culturally indian in the first place?
Again, thinking there is a simple definition for this is silly. But so is thinking that there's an issue with that.
>What if people don't adhere to your prescriptions?
The point of hindutva is to promote those ideas. You can impact culture without forcing people do to anything, just as the west has done really.
I don't think therei s an issue with it, but I respect people's liberty to do as they please (provided it doesn't directly affect others) over their adherence to something as vaguely defined as culture.
I think you should be free to promote whatever you like, but no one should be forced into any fold.
don't tell me to fuck off
>REAL BANGLA HOURS
clicc dat shit if u still up niggas
Hope the job outlook for that is great, probably is in Gujarat.
I know that's why I changed it, I'm planning to study public health with hopefully a focus in epidemiology.
not going to live there, I'm british phamily
The school I'm going to and the skills I learn my course, should mean I can get a decent job with good career mobility prospects.
On his curry did Sanjay chew
When the urge to defecate drew
Since he was in open view
Letting loose his bowels would be taboo
Sanjay did know what to do
He could see the public loo
But inside was a witch who would say boo
There was also no water to run his hand through
he needed it clean to finish his stew
then an idea came to him out of the blue
If I follow this avenue
Sidestep the beggar dying of flu
Then go around the corner and past the Ghandi statue
There is a place most sacred to us hindu
The designated shitting street where we can poo
Sanjay squated down as if on cue
And strained to the extent his face changed its hue
Unleashing a massive brown slew
Which slopped down in a heap right next to his shoe
And returned to his curry without further ado
>ISKCON temple though.
Yeah epidemiology is a favorite subject of mine. You won't be getting paid as much as you would in Med but you'll be enjoying your work a LOT more. Public health epidemiology is super duper interesting
yeah, i was really weirded out by it all.
>the white and black people dancing and then doing prostrations everywhere
>this weird chinese ascetic woman smiling round the corner
>no mention of diwali whatsoever that i can tell
>30 minute long aarti with weird bengali music
>boy dropping water on my head and praying to a murti of his guru
really weirded me out, usually I turn up, do a 5 minute aarti look at the murti, say hello to anyone i know and go home. This was some weird shit.
Yeah, I don't care too much about pay if I'm going to be miserable for the rest of my life. I read a lot of articles on epidemiological practices during the ebola crisis, that's where my interest peaked.
Besides if I wanted to still go for medicine I can just move to Bangladesh and with family ties go from there as long as the current govt. is in power.
Part of muh homeland is there.
Sorry brother. Didn't mean to offend. a
What book should a pleb read to get a decent understanding of economics?

>I don't care too much about pay if I'm going to be miserable for the rest of my life
>babby's first econ book
difficult question because there are a fuckload of introductory econ books.
this is the one I had for first year econ (i didn't read large sections of it, because i was already well-versed in them), not sure if it's apt for just getting a laymen's/beginner's understanding though because it might gear you towards further academic appreciation of economics.
I might even recommend my high level books:
Oxford AQA Economics AS and Oxford AQA Economics A2, which give a very basic descriptive knowledge of Econ. I bet its difficult to get print versions of these in the US though and there is probably analoguous US books.
Another recommendation is if you're in university, to look at the required reading for the econ 101 class if that is available for you.
Last rec might be econ for dummies, though I haven't read it so I can't actually rec it .
hahahaha wew la
