difficult question because there are a fuckload of introductory econ books.

this is the one I had for first year econ (i didn't read large sections of it, because i was already well-versed in them), not sure if it's apt for just getting a laymen's/beginner's understanding though because it might gear you towards further academic appreciation of economics.

I might even recommend my high level books:
Oxford AQA Economics AS and Oxford AQA Economics A2, which give a very basic descriptive knowledge of Econ. I bet its difficult to get print versions of these in the US though and there is probably analoguous US books.

Another recommendation is if you're in university, to look at the required reading for the econ 101 class if that is available for you.

Last rec might be econ for dummies, though I haven't read it so I can't actually rec it .
