What's it like being an atheist in Europe?
>>
>>53171115
A lot easier than being one in America.
>>
It's great you get to bully christians and people think you're smart.
>>
>>53171115

In Europe, people mostly don't give a shit about religion.
Also, in the US, being religious is a sign or morality when it's almost the opposite in Europe.
>>
>this is called "militant" atheism
Why are theists so touchy?

the fear of god versus the fear of death and nothingness is pretty equal

and if you feel one with god and your life then its more positive but limiting

we dont call ourselfs atheists for starters

we keep it to ourselfs
its not an us vs them thing
its a belief
we respect that belief

i never had anyone tell me i should believe in god, im not baptized but they wouldnt know because it never comes up

when someone says they go for church we dont make snarky comments while tipping fedoras either
>>
I feel enlightened by my own intelligence.

More srsly nobody cares, not even my religious grandma.
>>
>>53171115

You dont have to fend off christians crying about being oppressed.
>>
No one cares, religion is a private thing (unless you happen to be a muslim)
>>
>>53171115
no one cares if you believe
no one cares if you don't believe
atheism is only an issue in USA and some backwards shitholes of the world
>>
>>53171115
>What's it like being an atheist in Europe?

A non issue. I rarely if ever refer to myself as such, because it just doesn't come up... Most people in higher education that are not Muslims are non-religious. Besides the Muslims in my year, I only know one girl who is unironically Christian, and I think that might come from the German side of her family. There was also a Jewish girl, but with her I wasn't even sure if she was religious or just a 'birth-Jew' so to speak..
>>
>>53171616
was she born with roses in her eyes?
>>
>>53171616
Belief isn't crucial in Judaism
Community is more important
>>
>>53171684

I wasn't there m8, who knows ;DD
>>
>>53171710

Same goes for all the Muslims in my year, honestly.. They would likely disagree in public, but I got the impression that a large part of 'Muslims' at my university (and also the ones I met in other places and high school) do not actively believe, do not pray and do not visit Mosques.. They mostly seem to call themselves Muslim and do ramadan and halal food because other people that call themselves Muslim would give them a hard time if they didn't..
>>
>>53171115
It's a non issue everywhere in the developed world except the USA
>>
>>53171419

I think that's how it is most places

only delusional fedoras think otherwise
>>
It's fucking normal.
Whenever I meet someone my age who is religious I take a double take. Happens extremely rarely though unless you are dealing with foreigners.
>>
>>53171115
Being indifferent, and letting Europe sink in relativism and islam, then realise you have nothing to oppose the organised muslim system, and slowly fall into depression/nervous breakdown or convert to islam.
>>
Like being a god.
>>
>>53171192
i too once used to bully people about their religion acting as a pseudo intellectual, but none of it matters, if anything we should turn to christianity so as to keep our national bond to each other, which is what the muslims and jews do with their religion.

>>

W-why? What's the practical use of taking pride in the absense of belief?

I don't get those 'militant' types, honestly.. Believing or not believing is a highly personal matter, and I find that trying to 'convert' folks to non-belief is a strange phenomenon.
>>
>>53171953

why do the heathen rage?
>>
>>53172421
>What's the practical use of taking pride in the absense of belief?

they are more anti-theist i.e. humanist than just "unbelievers". their value system is post-christian.
>>
>>53172822
I'm also a humanist with a post-Christian value system and I'm not trying to convert anyone
>>
>>53171931
The only reason to be christian is if you genuinly believe in their god. If you're doing it for any other reason (such as muh immigrants) you are not a christian.
>>
>>53173009
>I'm

wew lad, good for you, but that doesnt change the fact that atheism+ is identity oriented
>>
Here nobody cares.

Although Europe and not even Norway is homogeneous. Religiosity is a slightly bigger deal in southern Norway.
>>
>>53171115
>What's it like being an atheist in Europe?
same as being religious. People live and let live.

It's very vulgar to talk about religion in public, and I don't even know what any of my friends believe, though I assume they're all atheist or "muh spiritual life force" type deists.
>>
>>53171115
How is this shit allowed? It's literally no different from "PRAY FOR JESUS" or "PRAY FOR ALLAH" sign on a bus. I'm not religious but I fucking hate these ignorant "atheists" who think they are so much better than everybody.
>>
>>53173278
>It's very vulgar to talk about religion in public

Is that sentiment not stronger than average in Ireland because of the religious war that went on until relatively recently? I remember seeing in some documentary on Dutch TV that Irish people almost NEVER ask each other whether they're Catholic or Protestant, due to historical sensitivities. Even among friends... Here, while religion is a personal matter, it's not really that taboo to ask about each other's denomination of Christianity. Especially since there are like 123 variants of Protestantism in this country, the question does sometimes come up among Christians.

Pretty sure that's allowed as well.. If I'm not mistaken this campaign was a response to religious ones.
>I'm not religious but I fucking hate these ignorant "atheists" who think they are so much better than everybody.
Who fucking cares m8, it's just advertising on a bus... When people collectively decide that advertising products and ideas on buses is tolerable, there's always the risk that you see something you don't like.
>>

>tfw know bunch of bitches who believe in some kind of higher energy 'something' that connects us all
I guess being christian is not cool, but being a real atheist is depressing because-no afterlife
>>
Nobody here cares as long as you're not a loud mouth and at least show respect for Catholic traditions. I would say most people aren't "religious" per say, we just recognize the significance of Catholicism for our identity. (Yes, it does stem partly from wanting to be different from Germany, shut up no bully)

>>53171115
why do Americans always take the ignorant, annoying, "let's quote the founders of this country approach to anything".
When you get religion, you get the proselytic, annoying, holier than version low church version of protestantism, that believe the founders of the country were more christian than the Book of Luke, with cringy, preachy messages of how much better and productive their life is for choosing this worldview.
When you get atheism, you get the proselytic, annoying, holier than thou preachers that have no idea of actual philosophy(now with actual churches. btw), that believe the founders of the country were more fedora and anti-theistic than a soviet Dawkins, with cringy, preachy messages of how much better and productive their life is for choosing this worldview.
>>53177335
Get in line. 2/3rd of your groups have a martyr complex.
Btw, could you please run for office in those 2 states? It's basically a non-issue state law from 200 years ago that would get ruled as unconstitutional the second someone would actually do it, but no one actually takes steps to redress it, since it allows them to bitch that they are oppressed second class citizens.
>>
>>53177871
This tbch. American Atheism is just liberal protestantism part 2: this time no god edition
>>
>>53177953
did you know they literally made a church.
And then a group literally schismed and went on to do a more fundamentalism communion(called "godless revival") because the first group wasn't atheist enough?
>>
Feels good.
Religiosity is seen with contempt.
>>
>>53171115
I don't mind it at all, in my experience religion is very rarely brought up in casual conversation.

I have quite a few Christian friends though. I joined a Lutheran youth group that would meet every week when I was like 14. We got together and ate pizza, played lazertag, went bowling, etc. I just didn't take part in the prayers.
It was pretty awesome. Our deacon was/is such a great man.
>>
>>53171327
that is one shitty color scale. You can compare the colors with the legend.
>>
>>53171115
>there's nothing more to life than consuming and being a degenerate, this is your new religion*

The real meaning of that sign
>>
>>53171115
Nobody cares.

Nobody talks about it.

You cannot build your identity as an atheist.

I bet in Czechia people would hate same way a person who talks too much for or against religion.

We are living here by the Wittgenstein's 7th point: "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent."
>>
>>53171181
sent :)
>>
>>53171115
Religious people are becoming minority in all the places that matter. My generation in university doesn't have a lot of declared church-going devoted Catholics and the ones that are 'out' and active in church are sometimes seen as strange.
People just don't like them talking about it.

And elsewhere, I'd say that its secular to the extreme. Its simply not something thats being brought up often. In my opinion, it is rude to be in-your-face about anything and especially that

Be a decent human being instead of selfish ignorant cunt and you won't have to worry about some after-life being calling you out on your shit.

Might be different in other European countries but I can confirm it's a non issue in the Netherlands. I know no one under 30 years old that is publicly Christian.
>>
>>53171115
When I talk to foreigners about not being religious they think im some edgy fedora rebel or something, but being non-religious is the norm and religious people are seen as weird here.

Religious christians are weirdos, religious muslims are more common among the muslim population so its seen as "more normal" but they are ten times worse than religious christians. Id prefer one million cathoshits over cuntslims.

No-one cares.

Those that do are looked down on, or Muslim. So both really.
