I'd say it's no worse than any other city if you stay out of low income areas. The weather is always good, never too hot or cold, and you are definitely dealing with a lot more kiwis (not necessarily maoris), but it's a nice place to live if you're not trying to make something of yourself.

I don't know much about Melbourne but mates who live there are in Fitzroy.

I live in Sydney and suburbs people like to airbnb while visiting are generally:

Eastern suburbs:
Bondi (and surrounding suburbs, close to beach, stuff to do but a lot of tourists), Tamarama (beach but less shitty backpackers), Woollahra & Paddington (midway between beach and city)

City:
Surry Hills (cafes, shopping), Chippendale (close to cafes, shopping and a bit cheaper)

Inner West:
Newtown, Enmore, Glebe (closer to airport and city)

Because the NSW government has introduced a city lockout because Irish tourists kept on punching each other to death the night life in the city is shitty at the moment. The lockout doesn't include the inner west (where most of the cities nightlife have moved to, King Street Newtown in particular)

You can't buy any alcohol after 10pm. Hiring a car in Sydney is a very good idea if you want to get around. If you get a hotel see if they have parking.

Check out: the botanical gardens, opera house + harbour bridge (this area is expensive because of tourists for food, drinks etc.), Taronga Zoo if you want to look at animals and see the harbour (you get a ferry to get there from circular quay, also check out ticket prices before you might be able to get a deal)
