my two cents on why its completely irrelevant for anyone who isn't dutch.

Surinamers only exist in surname and in the netherlands, there are no surinamers in any other countries.

Other countries/language communities have different focusses in the region that distract them from Suriname:
Portuguese speakers have Brazil
Spanish speakers have an array of countries
English speakers have an array of other caribbean countries as well as Guyana
French speakers have their own caribbean islands and french guiana.

Suriname literally does nothing of note, the only things of note it has, are only of note relative to the netherlands: eg being a colony and bringing its cuisine to holland (its cuisine is not even too unique either, its mostly watered down indian food or stuff that can be found in neighbouring countries)

My father worked as a doctor on the border control between Suriname and France (French Guiana) for some times, during his conscription.

Apparently French Guiana back then was pretty third world, but Suriname was waaaay worse, and people were trying to get into France en masse.
