I'd say we slightly prefer wine at least regionally

In contrast to the Mediterranean who enjoys one or two glasses of the more alcoholic wine with a meal and doesn't drink at any other time, the North-western European will engage in long lasting celebrations and consume a large amount of beer. Beer being less alcoholic, can be consumed in much more of a bulk quantity and so the festivities can continue longer.
