We were this size before building a "huge empire". You called us a world power before empire, but a little shithole afterwards. We actually have more overseas territories and bases TODAY than we did before the First British Empire

Anyway, why should we be ashamed for having some successful colonies and spreading our culture throughout the world? The British Empire is gone but its legacy remains and British traditions of fiscal liberalism, parliamentary democracy, the common law and many cultural things like sport and fashion have been spread throughout the world

A country of 1 billion people, which will be an important power if only because of its size, has absorbed many British political and legal traditions, plus cultural ones (such as sport i.e. cricket). Guaranteed bonds between us and what will be one of the most important countries in the world will only be beneficial in the future. In an economic sense this kind of thing is a huge advantage because companies can expand more easily into countries that have cultural links.
