An alternative phonetic spelling system could be implemented for english. Unlike norwegian with the nynorsk failure, english is widespread enough to succeed at implementing that.

There is languages that have comparable numbers of speakers but you don't get the breadth of people that speak English, only ching chongs speak Chinese and Mohammedans Arabic, for example.
