yo greekbros. I have a few questions about your former written language Katharevousa.
>how well do you understand it?
>are any of you old enough to remember it being used?
>do you sometimes encounter documents or texts written in Katharevousa nowadays?
>is it possible to write modern standard greek in a way that closely resembles katharevousa to make it look more posh?
>>73034354
Katharevousa (Greek: Καθαρεύουσα, pronounced [kaθaˈrevusa], literally "purifying [language]"), is a form of the Modern Greek language conceived in the early 19th century as a compromise between Ancient Greek and the Demotic Greek of the time. Originally, it was widely used both for literary and official purposes, though seldom in daily language. In the 20th century, it was increasingly adopted for official and formal purposes, until Demotic Greek became the official language of Greece in 1976 and Andreas Papandreou abolished the polytonic system of writing both Demotic and Katharevousa in 1982.
>>73034357
Katharevousa is quite closer to modern common than to ancient Greek, I can understand it clearly and I think the same goes for most other Greeks with more than two braincells; however I can't really replicate it.
I was born in 89 and I have only seen it used in older books, literature or official documents.
Modern documentation is no longer written in katharevousa.
It is kind of possible but try too hard and without proper understanding of it you'll sound ridiculous. It's a running joke that higher ranking army officials try to sound fancy by adding elements of katharevousa in their speech and reports, only for their lack of education to be exposed.

>I can understand it clearly and I think the same goes for most other Greeks with more than two braincells
Is it really that close to Demotic? What exactly is the difference then and what elements differ significantly?
Also, my impression is that Katharevousa is not clearly defined. Apparently it's up to the author whether it should be close to Demotic or close to Ancient Greek.
1.your country
2.How do you distinguish between soup and stew?
Jap
having broth edible = soup
having broth not eaten in custom that is usually too thick or salty to eat = stew
We often misinterpret stews like Pot-au-feu and Borscht as "soup" for this reason.

>having broth edible = soup
having broth not eaten in custom that is usually too thick or salty to eat = stew
basically this in Canada, for me atleast
>>73034324
Soup is liquid, stew is full of bits

Is stews like Irish stew alien to Canadians?
I think they eat their broth.

I don't.
>>73033739
No. Truly the India of the Americas. The only reason it isn't my least favorite country is because there aren't many Brazilians here, but there are a fuck load of Indians.
I've heard the southern part of the cunt is nice, and I like the Portuguese language, but I'd be too scared to go rhere, it seems very violent.
Going to the UK for a bit this summer. Anyone know some things I can do that will scream "I'm an American" or preferable will be seen as overtly offensive to British people? I was thinking of wearing a shirt like pic related, or even better one of those douchey American tang tops, and I'll also say "f a m" and "bro" a lot. That sounded like a good start but was hoping you guys could help me out some more.
