What's the alternative? I guess you could go get a job as an electrician, marry some woman who gets fat and bitchy then divorces you and takes all your shit, and then grow old and die a miserable alcoholic alone in a tiny apartment.
Most people's lives suck regardless of any decision they make. Trying to become a professional artist is a dumb decision by basically any metric... but at least you have a chance to be happy if you don't crash and burn.

That's hardly a unique downside to art careers. In fact, art is amongst the handful of professions that many people can do until very old age. In almost every other job, you are forced to retire at around 60.
