How old are you?
What age did you decide you wanted to be an artist?
What age did you really start working towards it?
>>
None of this is relevant.
Stop worrying about your age and just draw.

13 I guess? I've been looking up tutorials ever since I can remember comparing my drawings to actual good drawings.

>>2383670
It might not be relevant to the artists' art but it's general blogposting for the community.
>>
18 3/4, I've always liked drawing for as long as I can remember, and I wanted to have art as a career as far back as 12 years old. Got alot of mileage and study since then, but only really "got serious" last September and made it a habit to practice, study or whatever as long as I was drawing at least an hour every day.

I sorta agree on you on this

Not gonna lie, when I was a kid I thought I was a fucking embarrassment that my friends were my age and were far better artist. Even when I reached to their level in a couple of years they would already ascended to god mode after practice.
I was so scared that there was something severely wrong with my that I'm not improving fasted so I thought I had taken more vitamins as a brain "steroid" to improve faster and did a fuck ton of skin care to lie my age.
I know I was a stupid, very competitive kid but I did improve really from determination and at least I have an "edge" I guess from being a /fit/zen so I'm not the stereotype of a fat artist.

However in college I did lied about my age to fuck with other artist and they really believed me. Not gonna lie at 16 I thought I really should kill myself at 25 if I don't reach to the expected tier I wanna be to not be a burden to my family.

Point is don't worry about age or you'll end up like me in middle school/high school.
Paranoid, harsh, and make borderline autistic decisions to eliminate the competition.

I always wanted to have a career in the arts. When I first started collage I was trying to become a film director but then I switched my major to be more drawing/animation focused.

I didn't start doing daily drawing practices until this year though. It was more of a weekly type thing.

I'm still shit but I'm getting there.

I had the compulsion to git gud a few times in the preceding years but I never stuck with it past a month or so. I've been at it consistently for about a year now and I've successfully hit the point where the idea of quitting and wasting my year's practice pisses me off more than the frustrations inherent of learning to draw. Sunk cost fallacy is a hell of a thing.
Luckily nowadays I enjoy doing art for what it is more than I enjoy the vague ambitions of being great in it for a few years. I'm more than happy to do it at my own pace from here. I want to be an artist, but I don't care if I ever become a professional artist.

It was about 2.6 years ago, don't really remember age desu.

Took 3 days for me to realize that i wasn't going to learn from JAZZA
a month to realize i won't learn from youtube vids.
Three months for me to realize books are best.
Didn't start to learn real perspective until last month. Depression and high school really took a toll on me.

I'm constantly kicking myself because I've always been a doodler and my parents were very encouraging all throughout my childhood and into high school to study art and my mom would go as far as to buy books and art supplies for me. I never buckled down until two years ago and now I have to play catch up learning and internalizing everything I should have done years ago. While it can be disheartening seeing kids draw much better than you can I am glad I finally decided to do it, age and experience has helped greatly with focus and discipline.

Turning 20 in a few days. Always drew stuff. Decided that I wanted to work professionally in concept art and illustration at 16. Was smart enough to not need to work hard during highschool so I had a lot of free time to study art. Graduated a year early and started getting professional illustration jobs at 18 (book covers, album covers, card games and that kind of stuff). At 19 I decided to go back to studying so I could get even better and skip the first (rough) part of my career and make my future easier and more secure. Currently a student, studying classical/academic drawing and painting on a 3 year program at a well established atelier.

Again I was a competitive little shit that wanted to be better than my classmates. I thought it was embarrassing at 13 that they were far better then me at my age even though I didn't know how to practice or knew what Loomis was in those days.
>>2384487
I think back then I thought that you can never improve past 25 (then again I was competing against Asians, a battle long lost). I don't have any of these view anymore since I'm old enough to the point where my parents are asking for grand kids.
I decide to tell my embarrassing ass story to make a point that we should worry too much on age and just draw.

I've been playing and writing music since I was 15, and last year I got into visual art after I fucked up my school exams, so enrolled in a PLC in Art Craft & Design, (A PLC is a one year course you can do Ireland between school and university, there's presumably equivalents in other countries) so I can hopefully enrol in Music school next year, I'd always wanted to paint and draw but never felt I'd be any good at it, doing a course in it dispelled that notion and I fucking love it now though.

Decided on fine arts as a career at 17. Before that I was looking at something more commercial like illustration or concept art. Wasn't mature enough to understand actual art I guess.

I started after reading Strangers in Paradise, am now about 6 months in. I like it a lot. Once I entered the workforce and become a wage slave (even a well compensated one) I had, and keep having, this existential crisis about how I would spend my time and how to make it meaningful and produce things, not just consume them. My previous hobbies weren't cutting it for achieving that but so far art is, and I really like it.

Like everyone who starts kind of late I wish I had started earlier, but I feel like now I am better able to buckle down and understand things moreso than I would have when I was younger. I know that was the case with music theory when I was younger.

ive been drawing for 2 years , had never drawn of my own volition prior. once i get a phone/camera ill pull up my old drawings if you want. Ive been drawing an hour or 2. Maybe as low as 50 minutes a day. Not sure, but its in that range when you average it out.

I went about it inefficiently as well, didnt draw from reference the first 9 months, only drew anime heads for 9 months ( all facing forward!).

Its nothing special, maybe youre overvaluing the amount of time it takes. If you look at Nile hes improved more and i doubt hes putting that much time in.

However, I will conceded ive spent a lot of time looking at art and browsing the forums.

Concept art was the pipe dream from 17. Wanted to git gud at 18, FZD was the dream school after college. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing with my degree in linguistics.

It wasn't until I was almost 20 that I realized I was wasting my fucking time and need to get my ass in gear if I want to be a competent beginner by the time I graduate. I got all the books, the tutorials, ready to attempt the aguri thing.

And now since break was over I haven't drawn in weeks because I feel too overwhelmed to do anything but shitpost on /ic/.

I have wasted 8 years of my life on this, At first I honestly thought that I was going to make it, I made some money out of it and praise from people that used to think I was just garbage, I went to far and developed tendinitis, and you know what?

Its not really worth it, at least not as a mean to support yourself, Im almost 30 and Im still living with my parents, I see their disappoint on their faces when I tell them that Im working on a 30 usd commission, I wish I had taken a more safe route, but then again painting and drawing its all that there is in my head, I cant think of anything else I could be doing with my time right now.

>>
>>2387199
Tendonitis? You need to do some weight lifting, at least pronating and supinating dumbells to keep the health of your hand and wrists.

Have you considered doing production art for studios? Depending on how good you are, you can have a more stable life financially.

yeh, you're in for heartbreak if you magically think just 'gitting gud' will pay the bills

hell, it doesn't even mean you will even git gud in the end either...

feels hopeless indeed. it's why I didn't be fucking dumb like you and asked myself my real reasons for wanting to 'do' art. I realized I needed a 24/7 obsession with it which I didn't have. And I can't pretend making my family sad/worried isn't important to me. That's just sticking ur head in the ground and hoping for the best. And again I'd like to say I am not a fucking idiot, if u didnt catch it the first time

man you're scaring me. mind posting your work? i just want to know a 30usd drawing looks like. (like quick sketch or fully rendered). and how much commissions do u usually get per month?

I'm a full NEET at 20 right now and a college dropout but seeing you like this really gives me determination to strive harder.

>30$ work

If you can shit 1 artwork for 1 or 2 hours and have a huge bulk, you'll have a good chance of having 2k- 6k a month anon.

Started at 31.
31. I always wanted to see drawings by already good or talented artist. But asking prices for artworks I didn't make myself including ideas I seen no one else do. Made me write them down instead. Throughout the years, 15ish to 30 or so.

Now I've been drawing a year, no references, no formal training. I'm producing stuff that;s shit but my lines are clean and I don't lack confidence. Generally good understanding of how something should look but it doesn't always translates to what I put on paper.

I'm happy and will continue to get better over time. I draw only for myself.

here is some of my art

it's a visceral juxtaposition of architecture and nature that ignores all the preconceived boundaries of perspective that so often oppress much of the artwork that i find on this plebeian website. i wouldn't expect any of you to understand it though.

I am 21.

I decided I wanted to make art my profession around the age of 19, still trying to figure out the best way to make money off of my stuff.

Really started working at it right before I decided I wanted to make it my job.
