any books on drawing animals?
Anyone have a frazetta megacollection? Or are there pdf's of his books?
Hello. I've only read 'How To Draw Like A Boss' so far and it wasn't very good, dropped it halfway through as I noticed it wasn't really teaching me anything and was just kinda bad.
I know that question has been asked a lot but with which book should I start?
Some Loomis book(s)?
Bert Dodson - Keys to Drawing?
Michael Hampton - Figure drawing?
Ernest Norling - Perspective Made Easy?
Another one I haven't heard of yet?
I'd really like some guidelines and opinions there if possible. And I also would like books that force me to practice and draw a lot. I feel like I wasted my time with that book mentioned above. I'm motivated but I do no want to wire my brain in the bad way by practicing 'wrong habits'. Thanks.
>>2366600
you see this shit? i dont know who this artist are but his meme is gold. exposure is mighty
>>2366600
Bert Dodson first, no arguing about that, do all the exercises if you can't get live models get photos.
Then Do Perspective made easy don't think about anything else before you are done with those or you will get overwhelmed.
Anyone know if Omphalos is scanned?
I bought his other books, thats enough for now.
any books on painterly styles?
Anyone knows where I can find books by Sarah Simblet? She also has one on Botany and a few others. Only book I could find was 'Anatomy for the Artist' but I am interested in her other books.
Are we allowed to make requests in this thread?
There is a book called "The Natural Way to Draw" by Kimon Nicolaides. All of my art friends have recommended it to me If anyone has it I would appreciate it.
If you dont have it but have read it, I would be interested in your opinion on the book.
Not really a book but does anyone have the vandruff perspective videos?
>>2366671
I'll follow your advice and see how it goes then, thanks anon.
>>2367151
It's okay. I wouldn't recommend it. It's heavily focused on giving you tools to be successful at life drawings, so to get it to actually work you'll need to combine it with a lot of hardcore life drawing sessions. His schedule for practice is very rigid. Personally I got very little mileage out of it. Too much focus on very abstract fundamentals that you would pick up on anyway while working out other topics.

>Die Gestalt Des Menschen (242MB pdf)
>Wir Zeichnen Des Menschen (9.59MB pdf)
>Sehen Und Verstehen (83.3MB pdf)
>Kunstler Anatomie (18.2MB pdf)
I nicked a copy of each, but they all look and sound pretty samey.
The quality of the files themselves vary a lot, I'm also wondering if anyone thinks they have a better (or different) version of them than I do, post if you got em.
>>2367437
You can get away with simply reading D'Amelio's perspective book (or was it Norling's? I forgot), Vandruff approaches teaching perspective from the same school of thought to D'Amelio, his book is dense with illustrations on every page, so you'll learn quite a bit faster from it imo, it's only about 100 pages.
here's the perspective videos if you really want em

no problem. i'll give weekly recommendation on books regarding creativity/art inspiration if anyone's interested.
I remember /ic/ raving about a book a few years ago that dealt with lighting and shadow. It was rather large and extremely expensive, hitting maybe $70+ on Amazon then.
I can't remember what it was called, I just remember it had a city nightscape photo on the cover, or a skyscraper at night. Something like that. Anybody have an idea what it might have been?

Is people on IC/ still buying it?
>>2379577
I'm a beginner and I feel it's really useful. He even writes a passage on how to use the book. There is quite a bit of information but he compiled it all to be read/understood/drawn in that order. I made sure to read it in its entirety before doing any copying/true memorization of the drawings
He has a fuckton of diagrams and drawings of planes of the body/body parts/face. The book even covers the basic stuff like proportion/shading.
You can actually download that e-book somewhere; I believe I got the link in an old art book thread. It's how I decided to buy it on amazon after reading it.
TLDR: A lot of drawings and information to memorize, but take it one step at a time and really try to understand and it will be fine.

I love that guy but I recall him quickly skimming through his book in front of the camera and it looked indeed that the book didn't have much to offer for people already initiated with his style. I could be wrong through. I'd still like to take a look a it.
What would be some books that are just nice to look at?
Be it figure drawings, landscapes, exteriors, objects, whaveter - anything goes! Just it being bunch of stuff conveniently packed together into one book that is easily downloadable.
Anyone have Robert Beverly Hale's "Master Class in Figure Drawing"?

I've not read the whole book yet, but it can be seen as an extended compilation of his videos:: an step by step guide from the very beginner until the more advanced techniques used for rendering with a pen. Keep it movin. You don't like my site, it ain't for you. lol You don't like my comments but feel the need to respond, do as you please. I was going to respond to this in an mildly-abrasive manner but then I realized you completely misread my comments. Completely.
>>2403702
>what makes an artist serious or not
This is at the artists discretion
If anon feels serious about their work, get the book
YOU on the other hand are wrestling with some other issue, which I suggest you confront. Because you took what I said, and responded in a manner which seems like you were personally offended.
This leads me to believe you may have issues with yourself about this matter.
In that case, you should read that book as well.

>If anon feels serious about their work, get the book
you seem to have missed my point completely. you're saying, from the best of my abilities what i gather, is that artists who consider themselves serious about their work should read the book
my issue with that is you seem to think you have the authority to say what someone should and shouldn't do, which is what i disagree with. learn to edit your thoughts and post them in one comment. you're saying a lot of unnecessary things.
it'd be like saying artists who are serious about their work should read loomis. sure he appeals to some people but not everybody has the same goal. even if two artists had the same goal to be a cartoonist or what have you they can take two completely different approaches and still find success and growth as an artist.
you do not have the authority to make that comment for anyone.
>>2403766
>artists who consider themselves serious about their work should read the book

Your issue, correct

You just told me

>you do not have the authority to make that comment for anyone.
I never claimed that authority. You are assuming that for me. Again, you said

And this is the basis for your response.

Not any books in particular, but the old school thinkers peppered their books with all kinds of stuff about art, I'll drop some of my favorite quotes.
>The practice of having women paint and draw was already widespread in
earlier times and has significantly increased in the last 200 years or so. It is well
known how many girls today learn to draw and paint without being obliged to
do so.
>Thus here too there has long been no narrow-minded exclusion, and the
external opportunities would be plentiful. If nevertheless so few women have
any importance in the history of art, what is probably lacking is the inner prerequisites.
Female painting and etching can only mean a kind of more elegant,
more luxurious handicraft for women. In this field, it seems, they find the sensual,
physical element of color more easily reachable than the intellectual, formal
element of the line, which is without doubt the reason why we know some
female painters, but as yet no draughtswoman of any significance. The ability
to impose form on chaos is in fact the ability of the individual who owes the
most universal apperception to the most universal memory: it is the quality of
the male genius.
- Otto Weininger

Happy chances are necessary, and many incalculable elements, in order that a higher man in whom the solution of a problem is dormant, may yet take action, or "break forth," as one might say--at the right moment. On an average it DOES NOT happen; and in all corners of the earth there are waiting ones sitting who hardly know to what extent they are waiting, and still less that they wait in vain. Occasionally, too, the waking call comes too late--the chance which gives "permission" to take action--when their best youth, and strength for action have been used up in sitting still; and how many a one, just as he "sprang up," has found with horror that his limbs are benumbed and his spirits are now too heavy! "It is too late," he has said to himself--and has become self-distrustful and henceforth for ever useless.--In the domain of genius, may not the "Raphael without hands" (taking the expression in its widest sense) perhaps not be the exception, but the rule?--Perhaps genius is by no means so rare: but rather the five hundred HANDS which it requires in order to tyrannize over "the right time"--in order to take chance by the forelock!
- Friedrich Nietzsche

"so that, by recognizing in the individual thing its Idea, he, so to speak, understands nature's half-spoken words. He expresses clearly what she merely stammers. He impresses on the hard marble the beauty of the form which nature failed to achieve in a thousand attempts, and he places it before her, exclaiming as it were, 'This is what you desired to say!' And from the man who knows comes the echoing reply, 'Yes, that is it!'".
- Arthur Schopenhauer

What good books do some of you know that somehow deal with overcoming both procrastination, slight depression, and at the same time lack of inspiration? I've got issues, I don't deny it. I can't seem to finish a single drawing related book, because once I get to the part I have a serious hardship I just drop it and keep searching for other way, and once I'm all out of options the laziness takes over. Or even worse - taking rather long breaks from drawing. Ironically drawing was fun for me way before I knew of a "mountain" of fundamentals which build up upon the other. And I've literally tackled the very bottom of that mountain.

Inspiration is a separate topic to be learned and gets in the way when learning to draw. As a beginner it is easier to just "copy," IOW take some finished work from a good artist, but use it for your own exercises, e.g. pose, style, color, perspective. Or use photos as references when doing landscape drawings.
Procrastination and depression are just the problem when you try to do too much at once, because you brain has to put a lot of invisible extra work in.
>>2409297
Some people keep telling that copying should be avoided. I've done copying since early years, but recently I've attempted to learn from books and it appears I've only copied illustrations in them, no wonder I could not understand hampton's gesture. I can show a bad gallery of mine, which wasn't really updated since january, as I haven't done anything worth showing, also no one really told me what I'm doing wrong - usually a blatant "keep it up!" phrase. Fuck that. Procrastination seem to be beating me.
Because of that I've questioned my not-that-good progress, and got frustrated in the process.
>>2410007
I didn't mean literally copying, but using a reference drawing to make a variation of it, so you can go through all the steps of drawing. E.g. change the pose, or change the perspective, or the style, or what is drawn or something else. This can be also applied to what you see in books.
As for not understanding certain books, that isn't really bad. Learn from a book what you want, and move on. Don't be bothered when you can't draw as good as what the book shows or you don't feel like drawing the contents at all. Books are just tools, not something you have to follow.
As for gesture drawing that is up for taste. It is probably better to read it when you are already good or love that topic.
You can show your drawings and exercises/studies, but no guarantees, as I can only see the result, but am not standing behind you while you draw. But maybe it will shed some light.
>>2410055
I doubt I've reached that point when I'd be able to rebuild reference in another way. Although I have no issues to rotate/change view of something in my head, but not on paper. I have vague understanding of how 'space' works. Other than that I'm a typical beginner like any other.
I have practiced both tripod grip and overhand, the latter obviously is uncomfortable but that is only because of table surface. I don't have any fancy easels or drawing boards, all I've got are self-made mdf boards of different sizes which I have trouble with keeping them tilted on a table surface. Tried to put them on some sturdy books though the board is sliding and as such I have to hold it in place most of the time. This covers more or less the surface I drew on.
I didn't ever have a tutor of some kind, who might be providing some guidance sadly. On that note I never had artistic friends.
Anyway, here is the gallery of terribad drawings, and there are quite a lot - http://imgur.com/a/XzHfh
>>2410095
Well, as a beginner you will think a lot more about positioning things correctly when putting it on paper. You will get it wrong a lot and erase and erase and redraw and redraw. All that stuff you learned about perspective and construction will come in handy. But honestly, this actually is fun, because with every erasing and redrawing you get a bit closer to what you want.
Perspective is a problem for everyone at first, but it doesn't mean you have to solve it first. Concentrating on other stuff while trying to improve your perspective over hundreds of drawings will slowly get rid of the problems. Same goes for anatomy and other complicated topics. Perfecting them before drawing doesn't work.
As for redrawing a reference in other ways, you will have to obviously read books about the stuff you want to draw in the first place.
As for grips, just use the normal one for writing. You will improve that grip as you draw. If you want to be fancy with grips, you will have to become a professional athlete or you can't judge what works for you.
MDF boards are useful in some situations, keep them in storage even if you don't use them. As for keeping them from sliding, just let it slide against your body. But it doesn't matter if you draw on a tilted surface. Just sit higher.
Avoid fancy easels and drawing board; they are useless. Professional artists don't use them either. They would actually make you a worse artist.
You copied schematics from books, this is pointless. Schematics are to be looked at. Also Loomis is a pretty bad method and outdated.
I can't see from your few original drawings what you want to draw in the first place; All I can say that there are probably books about drawing exactly these things and you should read them first. Anatomy/Construction/other topic independent skills are important, but you should maybe spent 30% of your drawing time a day on these, just have these books open as reference so you can scratch your head.

>>2410496
If not I think they're in CGpeers.
Been looking for this. No luck.
>>2410129
So what would be the other things to study first instead of perspective? Perspective seems complicated, but at the same time easier than anatomy no doubt. Might need to go back to basics, but it does not seem fun anymore. I'm backtracking instead of progressing. One of the reasons behind it is uncertainty of what exactly would I like to draw.
Writing grip is easiest for me, sure, but even wih overhand grip I do manage to get slightly fraying straight lines. With overhand it seems easier to draw ellipses/circles and curves. With tripod circles come out like a mess. I do "ghost" them.
I don't even plan to buy any easel or drawing board. 10€ seems too much for a piece of A4 wood, and that does not cover delivery expenses that would be another 5€ or even more.
>You copied schematics from books, this is pointless. Schematics are to be looked at. Also Loomis is a pretty bad method and outdated.
So I see. What do I do then, if copying illustrations from books should be avoided? I've always done that. I can only learn if I copy. I'm a visual learner. Text I tend to forget instantly, while drawings I can remember for a long time. I'm confused right now. Aside of Loomis what other methods could you recommend? Right now I'm at a point when I'm at a crossroads between "suck it up and draw" and "should I even bother" more or less.
Anyway, I have doubts that I can learn to draw close-to-professional level. So far I'm at a ground bottom and have not made a progress yet. And I understand that I'm not putting in hours in that would made me improve, as i don't really know what would I need to focus on.
Actually bought an art book for the first time in a while.
This:
http://www.amazon.com/Alphonse-Mucha-Celebrating-Creation-Museum/dp/B005P1TC9Y
Found it in a used books store for under $8 in like-new condition. Pretty neat, and I actually learned some new stuff about him.

Might need to go back to basics, but it does not seem fun anymore. I'm backtracking instead of progressing. One of the reasons behind it is uncertainty of what exactly would I like to draw.
Even if you "go back" to the basic topics (except endlessly drawing spheres and rectangles, that is pointless), that isn't bad. Perspective and every other basic topic in art has enough in it that if you look back at them a few years later you will learn new things.
You should draw what fancies you right now and what you can finish. If you can only finish simple 2D icons, do that. Stick figures? Flowers? Do that. Try to draw to make an impact as if it was high quality art to any person looking at it. If you see something cool in a book, copy that or reuse it in whatever way you want and try to recreate it right then. If you find an image on the internet, do the same.
At the side you will have to read a lot of books about all kinds of topics you come across. There is no need for a list. If it is art related you want to have a look at it and judge it for yourself if it works for you. Will you get done in time with your drawing or waste too much time on learning? That is the most important thing when you learn while drawing. Change your drawings to what you can do right now. If you need to do exercises, limit the time spend every day on them so you don't forget to draw.
The /ic/ recommendations about drawing are not good, most times figure drawing or drawing basic shapes isn't the answer.

>So I see. What do I do then, if copying illustrations from books should be avoided? I've always done that. I can only learn if I copy. I'm a visual learner.
Sorry, seems like I misunderstood your intentions when you made the drawings. It looked like you tried to force something by brute force. If it is your favourite way, then it is obviously the right thing to do.
Something for real basic drawing is "Composition - Understanding Line, Notan and Color." It's still done as introduction for students who want to become artists, not hobby bullshit. Maybe that will help you get your fun back.
Other simple stuff are the books by J.D. Harding and some lectures by John Ruskin you can find on Gutenberg. These are also written by artists to art students and are for beginners, the skills you learn there are actually more basic but they are often forgotten about.
