>You drew everyday for a long time, longer than anyone else. Congratulations. You are the best.
>Update every day at: http://www.lavaflake.com/draw/
>The deadline for submissions is 00:00 GMT each day
>You should spend at least 30 minutes on each update
>Miss a day and you can make up for it the next day with a double post.
>Miss another day within a month and you're eliminated.
>Progress updates are ok but they will be policed like other submissions
Entry into the first challenge is open until Saturday at 00:00 GMT. People who join after then will be entered into the less awesome Last Artist Standing #2.
thumbnails for the gallery will be ready tonight, after that it's being able to favorite/follow artists and then the comment system (with a critique request option.)
After that it's whatever's on the list in the patch notes section
> 100 remaining, 12 eliminated
THEY'RE DROPPING LIKE FLIES
Hey, this may be a really stupid question from a tech perspective, but what framework are you using to make the website? My college course websites look almost identical to it.
oh wait i think there may be something wrong with elimination system. 4 of the 12 eliminated people had redeemed themselves with a double post but they were still eliminated. I don't think it's even possible for someone to have entered, missed a day, doubled posted and then missed another. that shouldn't be possible until tomorrow.
i'll go investigate
let them go, they couldn't hang.
As for the low effort warning... how do you know that one isn't putting a 30 minutes effort or not? What is the criteria? I'm a noob and my 30 minutes half-finished sketch might look like an advanced artist's 5 minute sketch...?
In addition to this, more than half of the submissions I've seen there are gesture studies. I only do those rarely and mostly do mango shizz... and seeing lots of people Loomis-ng and being all gungho about figure drawings on this board make me feel like I'll be backslashed if I posted muh drawings.
Anyhow, where do you guys even get the motivation to do pose sketches all the times. Don't you ever get sick of it? (As for me I do human mango doodling 70% of the time, environment 10% of the time, non-human studies 15% of the time and only 5% of my time is allotted to gestures)
Bahhh I'll quit my whining and jump on the ship anyway... This might be a way to be more dedicated to something. Good luck everyone!
Yeah, I'm trying to get them done before the day starts so I can post immediately, so I don't forget later. But it's a bit frightening, I know I'll probably forget at some point.
I draw a lot of weeb stuff too, I'm just trying to put more serious stuff here so I don't look bad, so basically the same concern as you. And I'm pretty sure someone linked this to the /a/ drawthread, so there's probably at least a few of us here. So I guess what I'm saying is that there's at least one anon who won't judge you if you aren't submitting study-type stuff every day. Studies are important but actual application is also very important.
> after that it's being able to favorite/follow artists and then the comment system
i can't wait to go completely unnoticed
In all seriousness though, OP, you're the best.
>no new notifications
>hello darkness my old friend
if you can't beat'em in a popularity contest then destroy them on the leaderboards. it's our only hope
that's some reality tv shit right there. this week on bigggggggggggg brotherrrr
THIS WEEK ON LAST ARTIST STANDING:
IT'S DOWN TO THE LAST TWO ARTISTS, ANON AND LAVAFLAKE.
AND WHAT'S THIS? IT SEEMS THE SITE IS DOWN! BUT THE NEXT DAY IS ABOUT TO START AND NEITHER ARTIST HAS SUBMITTED!
BUT OH- THE NEW DAY HAS JUST BEGUN, AND THE SITE IS UP AND RUNNING!
LAVAFLAKE MADE IT ON TIME, ANONYMOUS HAS BEEN ELIMINATED!
VERY CRAFTY, LAVAFLAKE! YOU ARE THE PROUD WINNER OF... NOTHING BUT PRIDE.
itd be even better if you voted yes for the vacation mode
>hfw vacation mode cant save you from comas
you will only get hate if you dont do decent effort and persevere we can tell if you got lazy and just did circles to call it a day
>i just want to know what the low effort is so i can stick to that.
>/ic/ is gonna be hard on me!~
man up, no one knows who you are and no one cares. fuck have you seen all the random furry shit? the whole point is to draw more than 30 minutes thats it , you really don't have an hour? what a sad life c'mon son.
>lava controls the site
>lava gets to shut down the site
>mod powers let him win
considering how low the standard OP seem to be setting are I would say he is bending backwards for you fools, how tragic to fail when the tools are literally being modified to help you succeed. look at the submissions right now, besides a few of them they all seem to be of low to medium effort and rushing to "not lose their spot" to then just loaf around for 22 hours to then lie to them selves and be like "whelp i drew today, there it is~" I can't honestly see more then 30 people lasting more than 2 months.
i'm hoping enough people last until the site's feature complete. that's when the tools will be in place to police low effort content and i'm hoping that the first time the notification "x has received a low effort warning" that people will step up.
i'd love to see people not just working to stay in the competition but trying to outdo each other. i love when people see something like turrnip's submissions and say "i need to step it up"
really like the anatomy stuff by user turrnip
are you studying from any particular book/artist or just drawing on your own?
I joined this on the first day, and that was also the first time I've drawn seriously in almost a year.
Now I have to post everyday and I'm realizing I don't even know where to pick up studying.
how does it affect beginners? i'm really surprised with how people are struggling with the concept that effort =/= skill
do you really think the overwhelming majority (that's what will be required) are going to vote to kick someone out of the challenge just because their drawings look bad? it's for submissions like the top one, not the bottom
im on drugs, when is the deadline for day 4?
You should let us favorite other users; making their entries appear at the top of the list so we can see their entry for that day quickly. Don't make it public how many people are subscribing to a user though because that will just cause cancer.
>Don't make it public how many people are subscribing to a user though because that will just cause cancer.
This is very important. Even better if users can't see who's following them or how many followers they have. Keep that shit totally private to everyone involved.
op is it possible to add a right/left scroll through of the gallery? unless i'm retarded and this is already implemented somewhere... right now it's click one thumbnail at a time, click out, click the next one
no it's not you, that feature was added last minute just to see if it would work. the library doesn't support creating a gallery of iframes so i'll have to mod it in. it's definitely on the list
they were enabled when I first moved the submissions page to the live server but I had to disable them because they were hotlinked (don't want to get blacklisted by the image hosts). i'm testing the new system now that will let people upload thumbnails with their submissions then I'll go back and add the missing ones
where were you for the other 23h59m of the day? that's so much time to upload!
ohohoh man it has been a long time since i've drawn seriously, partially because i'm busy and partially because of the mental barrier of "fuck, i'm fucking shit at this"
and thanks to this i found a new impetus and I remember how absolutely wonderful the process of drawing itself actually is, once you break the laziness/self-doubt barrier. i mean, the end product is still shit but when you're just drawing it just feels nice to be engaged in an all-consuming process and get back on track. what a release
ive been experimenting with drawing and playing guitar almost daily. Ive drawn loads more than playing the guitar but ive made much more progress in music overall than any sort of visual art. Why is that?
Because you probably have no idea how to study art and you're going about it inefficiently. Most people who just pick up a pencil and decide they want to learn to draw just draw random images they find and don't start practicing fundamentals, anatomy, perspective and other core concepts you need in place before you'll see to start any real improvement.
Huh, well, I posted my stuff to DA so that's not really possible.
Oh well. I shouldn't be cluttering the space with my bullshit anyway. I'm just concerned about being voted as "low effort" for only being able to submit one thing at a time.
oh fucking hell there are actually some pretty competent people doing this christ
i guess i could just anonymously upload to imgur, but if you could be able to parse or regex multiple links in some way, that would be ultra swell, OP
if you enter any time in the next 3.5 days then you'll be in the first challenge :) warning though: if you get eliminated then you're out until next week when the next challenge starts. once you're eliminated that's it for you, even if entry is still open
i resized and uploaded 350 thumbnails. kill me now. ps some of you need to learn not to upload 4000x5000 blurry photos of your loomis studies like seriously
i bet you read that and thought oh man he's talking about me. no i'm talking about dozens of you. goddam.
the gallery looks better though
There seems to be a bug in the gallery where clicking on certain thumbnails opens another person's image. For example I was browsing day 2 of the challenge, clicked on sweaterfag's submission and it opened Loafer's pic.
unfortunately no, not without either limiting submissions to just a couple sites which can be tricky because they all have different terms and services.
the site can't survive without linking to everything instead of hosting it. despite offloading everything the site still maxes out on cpu and I/O during peak times.
more importantly i dont want to limit people like that. i like that people can link to their blogs if they want to maybe get a little exposure or they can dump it on an image host if they want to stay anonymous.
it's honestly not that bad to add the thumbnail. i did the entire archive using the same tools that you will use to submit and they turned out pretty good considering the 0 effort it took
Alright. Sweet. I don't really like to upload my sketches before I refine them so a part of my daily submissions will probably be pieces I'm rendering out. The only time I stop to do a study is if I'm stuck with something I'm working on so I can't really rely on that in the long run.
Look at the ending digits of my post and ask yourself what they tell you about me, Are they just a number?
The answer is no, ending digits are a sign of power, they are what divides the classes of [s4s], you could never compare the influence a measly single has on this board to the privileges digits like mine have.
Over history this status of supreme power has had many titles: alpha male in the animal kingdom, God in the bible, Emperor by the Romans, then during the middle ages they would call them Kings. Early on, the United States called them President. Today however, with the introduction of the internet, a mathematical world, a new type of "King" was born... a digit to rule over all digits, his name was the King of GETS.
All over the cyberspace, since its very creation there has always been such a presence, and in 4chan.org/s4s/ it has manifested as a rare occurrence known as "doubles".
The King of GETS is here, in this very board, watching over us, his soul lives in every repeating number, and we, as proud citizens of this world have the obligation to check them.
check'd and kek'd
>been drawing too small for over two hours
>mfw i loosen my fist
I'm pretty sure the muscles pulling my middle finger just snapped off.
im glad i did cause there's only one time sensitive thing left to do and that's to fix the elimination system. after that i can slow it down and go 50/50 with programming to drawing instead of the current 95/5
right? i'm trying to figure out if /ic/ is a higher skill level than the average art community or if the new people are afraid to join it because of how good some of the submitters are.
i thought for sure this would attract so many new year resolutioners who were "finally going to learn to art. 2016 is the year, boys"
> i thought for sure this would attract new years revolutioners
fuck that noise
i may be a beginner but i want this shit
i've got fucking dreams motherfucker and i'm finally sick enough of my own complacency to do something about it
i still consider myself a beginner and i'm posting
i've been drawing on and off on /ic/ for over a year now though, which makes me think that /ic/ is a bit above average
it also may be that the people serious about drawing every day are above average because they're already willing to put in effort
>new year resolutioners who were "finally going to learn to art. 2016 is the year, boys"
This was me last year, and I stuck to it. This year is about keeping the grind going and zeroing in on weak areas.
I've always considered myself a beginner when it comes to learning about specific fundamentals I've never learned about before. And believe me, there's plenty of stuff to learn. Just keep on grinding and don't think about it too much.
Draw bigger man, if you ever run out of paper somehow just switch to digital. Enough pixels for everyone m8.
Also, those hips on Akunim and tripfag's today, gosh.
Sounds ok to me, but I'm not OP. Look at the other guys submissions, and see what size looks good for them I guess. I'm making mine so they fit within the expanded image box so you don't have to scroll sideways as well as up and down.
Or just host your stuff on a tumblr blog, because then they have the option to expand the image further if they want.
>spend entire day going all out on a finished drawing
>everyone else is doing studies or sketching
>make myself do some random quick gestures or forms before deadline and submit that instead
every day so far
i typed out this big long explanation with stats about why this system is currently the only that the site can handle since it's way more popular than expected but i dont think an art board is the right place for that topic. and it doesn't fix the problem.
*20 minutes later
i almost did something dumb. i can set it so that if you link directly to an image file (ending in .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif) then you won't need to submit a thumbnail. it will just automatically download and convert it for you. with a lot of extra work i can make it pull from direct links to tumblr posts, deviations, imgur, etc. That would mean that 95% of submissions would have their thumbnails auto generated.
the reason it's dumb is because it's 4 hours before the deadline and once again im rushing to implement a feature that probably won't work well (it'll work for 99% but some weirdness will slip through.)
I'm going to go do my drawing for the day and fix the elimination bug. When the site rolls over I'll make it so that if you don't need to add thumbnails for direct image links. the rest can come later.
but for now you'll need to attach a thumbnail
If you can join every week, how can there be only one left?
You know, after a while (3 months) if you plot who is left, you could easily cluster those old timers that have huge gap between guys who joined freshly. Groups in which you compete will emerge on their own.
join on week 1, that's your week to win. last longer than everyone else. each week there's a new challenge and your submissions automatically enter you into them.
28 years later you win last artist standing #1. you are the best. you get a little badge on your profile that says finished #1 in las #1. now you descend from the heavens and enter the battle that is last artist standing #2.
maybe there's a dozen people left, maybe there's just one. let's say you lose this one. vacation mode couldn't save you from the car accident that put you in a coma.
on your profile it says finished second place in las #2. it doesn't stop there, though. you're eliminated from every challenge you're in. finished 15th in las #3, 27th in #4, all the way down to finished #x in las #(28*52). when you wake from your coma you can submit again and enter las #(28*52+coma)
I uploaded my thumbnail image as my main image. wat do?
maybe I should read through these threads every once in a while. I dun goofed.
It won't let me submit animated .gifs
I'm drawing something else but what should I do If I wan't to submit an animation?
I think that the whole system should be changed. If you miss out, you're kicked out. You have to redeem yourself in the challenge arena in order to get back in the game. Make it truly a last artist standing, until there is only one. Like a fucking reality show. This could be like season 1, once you get a winner you'd start season 2, etc.
But is the thumbnail the problem? or are you trying to submit imgur/image files? I'm pretty sure you can submit almost any link, including a blog with your gif, and put up a still as the thumbnail.
tfw you'll never have a cute doge to comfort you while drawing
i couldn't figure out a way to fix the bug on time so when the elimination script runs and does the wrong thing it triggers another script that goes in and fixes it. so gross.
no worries, send an email to lava at lavaflake.com with the details and we'll get it sorted out
you wont be a winner cuz you dint last the same days the oldest fag in here made, plus no badges to brag to the pr0n thread.
everything about the site is design to encourage artist to spend at least 30 minutes everyday drawing. from being able to rejoin if you're eliminated, joining if you're late to the party, the threat of being eliminated if you slack off.
if the next last artist standing didn't start until the first finished then yeah it would be more like reality tv because you'd have an audience of people watching instead of competing
I've seen your stuff and I'd suggest you do some comic pages
Plan a narrative, expressions, poses backgrounds etc. and follow them strictly.
Drawing with purpose and narrative in mind helps a lot.
Try animating simple thinks like a head, nose, body rotation or a walk cycle. It will do wonders for your understanding of form.
Don't tell me you're giving up already!
I don't like having to confront the fact that I'm low on the totem poll myself day after day but the worst thing bottom feeders like us can do is stop. You should let the success of others motivate you to try harder.
my lack of knowledge makes me feel its my fault when i know its not..
Just do your best. That way you won't regret anything.
i want to be as good ad jmgn and draw my waifu and me being happy, its the closet i'll ever get to having someone so that makes me keep pushing. i'm pathetic i know..
yeah the thread took a weird turn but it gave me a good idea for the comment system
>no titles or descriptions
>comments will be threaded
>poster can't make a top level comment and can only reply
that way there's no fishing for compliments or making excuses. the art will speak for itself.
/fit/ and /ic/ seem to share similar blood with each other, how strange.
Same tbqhfamfam. Been at this for years and everything's still a struggle, and if something goes right I put it down to being a fluke. I'm not even a "bottom feeder", but I've been stagnating at mid level for months and months now.
But the whole point of this is to just post. My work might be lower mid level forever, but at least if I post it daily it'll give beginners an easy target to aim towards and beat.
5 pic/5 days but they're staggered
1: 5 sketches
2: 2 renders (prev batch)
3: 5 inks
4: 5 flats and 1 render (from prev batch)
5: 2 renders from current batch
repeat ad infinitum
im working on filling out a 3k/3k canvas with sketchies from imagination for tomorrow so its not all just commissions from me every day.
I'm gonna win this shit tho, ive been drawing 5-8 hours a day for a year now.
i only need to draw for half an hour to keep competing with you, you degenerate, my shit doddles will beat you.
Thoughts on your discipline? What has helped you the most In staying consistent? Did you have issues with doubting yourself as you were being introduced to fundamentals and serious study? Sorry for all the questions.
i will obliterate you mother fucker
youre never alone, not with internet friends like us
you're already dead kiddo.
seriously i love your work cutchulu guy hope i can render like you someday
Um... I think I broke it.
The submission box had two submission spaces, so I thought that meant you could submit two different links? Which I tried, but it ended up just duplicating the first link for some reason.
Bottom line is, there are 3 bananas and there should only be 1. My bad.
So far I can see there are around 2-3 users with a lot of potential, I'm really glad we're doing this, to be honest I was kinda sick of the drawing/stylization generals and this idea is really refreshing. kudos to OP.
Maybe because the earlier threads were mainly about discussing ideas, rules, and features we'd like added? Now that the basic framework is up and running it's just a case of getting on with it.
GETOUT GETOUT GETOUT!!!!
I just realized I've almost drawn more now in 4 days than I drew the entire last year. I don't know how I even managed to convinced myself I drew on/off but looks like I drew nothing at all.
>inb4 I burn out in a week
Stop uploading thumbnails that arent of your submission you cucks
yeah i'll replace them with the real thing and tell people not to do that :P
i think the site's been blacklisted by imgur so it throws a wrench into my auto-generation plan since 80% are hosted on imgur and the site wont be able to grab the files (I think, I haven't tried yet).
Should still be able to do it with DA/tumblr/whoever has an api but that'll take a little more work and wouldnt be available for a couple days.
i'm going to do my drawing for the day then work on the submission and elimination bugs. once they're fixed i'll work on auto-generation. if the site's not blacklisted then it's not too hard to implement
My timezone has me really fucking confused. If I missed a day it'd tell me right? I don't know if it's been a day or not and I fell asleep a but longer than intended.
If I have to submit two things, well. I already do multiple things a day.
>be new artist
>find out about LAS and decide to join to push myself to become better
>it's my first time drawing seriously and I also have to learn all the nuances of digital
>decide to do a bell as the shape is simplistic enough for a beginner like me
>still spend tons of time trying to get the lines presentable
>decide to color it in to try and make it look better so that all the pros on /ic/ won't laugh at you
>be put on blast in front of everyone
I feel that anons pain, that could have easily been one of my submissions
>why the users are having trouble
the site is buggy and is constantly changing
>why the developer is having trouble
the site looks simple but it's deceptively complicated. there are 8 different account states that result in the submissions being handled in slightly different ways, ways that change the account state
it's a lot more than just an input field being dumped into a database
Exhausted from the day and feel like shit. Usually there would be no way I would draw on days like these, but here I am working on today's submission. There's no way I will lose to the likes of you, /ic/.
What are you doing to me OP.
I love reading shit like this it makes me so happy
fixed! there were 2 bugs working together on this one. if either bug happened then everything worked fine but if they both struck at the same time then it would cause the triple submit. annoying but kinda neat
what do you mean?
So before the thread dies, which will take about a year....
Anyone have someone under your radar for any reason? Any masterful anons that you admire? Any scrappy beginners who seem to have potential that you want to see grow? Or on the flip side, who are you gleefully watching to crash and burn either in the competition or in terms of their own artistic progress?
>click despairful alimony guy thinking it's despairful alimony guy
That's just not fair.
I spent 3.5 hours on pic and I fuck it up.
I will post it but I hate it.
>All submissions disappear each day
Aw fuck, there were some I really liked. Time to start saving them all.
Yeah. I've never posted my art to /ic/ because it's garbage and I'm generally just ashamed at how slow and bad I am. But oddly this thing is actually motivating me to study every day, even if it's a little. Where as normally I keep finding excuses as to why I can't even put in 30 min. I just hope I can get my scanner to work for days where I'm not at home to draw digitally.
