So this will be a series of threads I want to test out. The purpose of this thread is to allow the community to learn together and provide accountability for interested Anons. We will go through lessons and books together to provide us with some structure. Through these experiences we will find how we compare to our peers; which will hopefully drive us to improve and add credibility to critiques. Artists of all levels can join. For those that are not interested, you don't have to join.
Curriculum:
>Draw A Box: Lesson 1
>Ernest Norling perspective made easy
>Optional -> Gnomon: Scott Robertson - Basics Drawing
Requirements:
>Finish DAB: Lesson 1 before next Monday.
>Read first six steps of Perspective Made Easy before next Monday
>I think we can do this. If you want to extend due dat we can. If you think this is too fast then suggest a better due date.
>MODS REQUEST: I think it would help to have ID's so that the comments are more organized. That way Anons don't have to keep saying: "Not OP by the way" or "Yeah, this is OP".
I hope this takes off and hopefully this will help you. Thank you very much Anons!

If you have multiple pages post your work on Imgur and link... or don't.... whatever.
The past year or so I've been having an existential crisis looking back at the past 5 years of my life. Right out of highschool I went heavy into art and got pretty decent after a year and a half of studying. My skills are pretty average. If Dave rapoza is a 10 and Jazza is a 1, I'm probably a 6.5 to light 7.
And even though I'm a 7 I still get shit pay. I racked my brain for days trying to figure out why this is, then I realized being a 7 is the cost of entry into this shit marketplace. I was lied to by all my heros. 90% of "working" artists are sacrificing their talents to work for some store manager whose side hobby is making a boardgame. Now that I see it this way it makes absolutely no sense for me to continue begging for $500 to do 40 illustrations over the course of 3 months.
The worst part is I feel like I wasted my early 20's on this fantasy a bunch of irresponsible adults tricked me into believing (just to protect their egos). 5 years spent sitting in a chair listening to podcasts and I literally have nothing to show for it. No friends no social life no nothing. And I can safely say atleast 60% of it was me just fucking around being a shut in. Looking back even when I was doing 8hr days studying, that still means a third of the day was wasted not socializing and acting my age.
With all this regret I could care less about working for magic or any of that shit. Fair warning to any artists sold on the dream of working for magic, blizzard or whatever the fuck: you're better off making your own shit and throwing it on Kickstarter until you hit the gold mine. The jobs will start pouring in once you're successful enough not to need them that's a fact..
well yeah, working for companies sucks.
thats why i have always tried to get good and do my own thing. fuck shilling for some fucking company for 15 hours a day for stuff you dont really care about.

Pretty cocky rating for only a few years drawing, post work? Curious how good you are
>>3081745
>not making friends on discord or with other people who do blogs
What kind of shitty artist are you who doesn't know about networking? If anything, you fell for the technical skill meme and don't got the right people under your belt yet.
anyone else find the hardest step deciding what to draw? just polishing technical skills is rather simple, but actually trying to be creative is so hard
>>3091831
It can be tough. Try to think about what your interests are and base it off that. Do you like characters? environments? mechanical things? Figure out what sort of things you enjoy then try to do something based on that. Also remember that you don't have to come up with a brand new amazing idea each time. You can base multiple paintings or drawings on the same idea/subject and just try to treat it in a new way each time.
Another option is to "steal" ideas. Read a book and take things from there, either a character or a scene. Look at artists you admire and see what their paintings are about and try it out yourself. Etc.

how do you use gamut masks? you just draw a shape on top of the color wheel and use the colors within it? thats fucking stupid
>>3091681
Well, that's a pretty cool colour scheme you got there.
>>3091681
>you just draw a shape on top of the color wheel and use the colors within it? thats fucking stupid
Yeah that is indeed fucking stupid, where did you get the idea that this is how color gamuts work?
You think of the colors you want in your piece and you decide on the dominant color scheme and choose the gamut shape accordingly. The point is to use a shape that creates a limited, harmonized palette that excludes the saturated colors that aren't part of your chosen dominant primary color(s).
Rate or Critique these.
Coworker made them and she is a one upper saying she is going to do this professionally, already has a page for this. Don't hold back.

if they taste as good as they look i think she's on to a winner

you're a 0/10
Lol yeah probably.
I'm scum but at least I admit it and have self loathing in check.
But she likes to criticize everyone about what they do or make or draw.
So I'm fine with 0/10
Question for you, /ic/. I commissioned another artist at a convention back in January and was told they typically take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to finish and send shit out. 3 months down the line, no commission and no follow up from the artist. I messaged them on twitter, they confirmed they still had my commission in mind and stopped responding. 6 months later we're both vending at the same convention, I ask about the commission and they tell me they haven't started it yet. I changed my request in the hopes that they'd actually do what they accepted my money to do over half a year ago and was told I'd get it in the mail. 8 months later, they still haven't done it.
What would you do in this situation, /ic/? At this point I'm ready to ask for my money back but I don't know how to go about asking them. I won't want to deal with a bunch of shaking and crying because they can't commit to what they've agreed to do. If you're going to take people's money, you better provide the service they paid for or buck the fuck up and return the money.
Pretty sure you're fucked
Paypal allows 180 days for refund and you've passed that a while ago . Try talking with your credit card company
I don't think the artist would return your money after ignoring you for so long.
Why the fuck are stories like that so common? Lazy ass shamless artists and autism ridden requesters that don't demand what they paid for?
Do you fucks have no shame
>>3091576
I paid them in cash. We vend at the same conventions so I'm tempted to just walk up to their ass and ask for my money back in person because that's my best bet at this point.
I do commissions too but I finish what I take on and decline what I'm not willing or able to do. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but when you're shitting out merch and ignoring commissions, I have no sympathy. The only thing holding me back is the potential fallout because we share the same spaces when we sell our art and I don't need tumblr-tier tittybabyism getting in the way of me making a living.
>>3091588
How much was it? At this point its your word against theirs and they might play the victim card, especially if you're planning to do it in person.

I'm looking for a tablet kind of thing to draw on and I want it to be functional like a laptop or iPad so I can use it for things other than drawing. But don't want it to be too big to the point I can't really carry it around.
I've looked around and think that the IPad Pro+apple pen, Wacom MobileStudio Pro 16, and Surface pro all look good, but don't know how good their responses are to a pen. I trust the Wacom MobileStudio is good because I own a Cintiq, but I don't really want to drop 3 grand to get one.
Any of you know which ones are really good and reliable? If you have any other ones please tell me about them. I'm just really in need of something like that to bring with me to school and stuff. (Also I'm using mobile so excuse any typos and such.)
Nigger, just draw on paper and trace it with a shitty chinese tablet.
I have a light laptop and a small tablet
It fits in my bag nicely, doesn't weigh too much and I can do digital plein airs or whatever easily
Paid £100 for the laptop (secondhand, new would probably be about £300, still cheap)
Paid £80 for the tablet (new, wacom pen small)
I've seen a bunch of portable tablets with screens and stuff but they so often cost like £1,000+ and are gimmicky
Buy a laptop, but a small tablet
>>3091556
Ipad pro 12.7 and apple pencil is the best choice if you want portability and high quality. Mobilestudio pro should be good too but it's way overpriced, almost twice (or in some cases three times) as much as the ipad.
I'd like to render the aircraft I draw, but having always coloured in flats, I don't know how to go about it.
What are some artist recommendations to learn from?
As for using photographs as reference, I'd like to see how other people go about it beforehand instead of rushing blindly ahead and not knowing where I go wrong.
>>3090904
its generally metal, so make the surfaces of it highly reflective with a strong and defined source of light, also remember to take bounce light and cast shadows into account
>>3090904
>>3091330
Actually aircraft paints are low sheen, but appear glossy in strong sunlight. Only early Cold War american designs used bare metal that is highly reflective.

Read How to Render by Scott Robertson.
Hey /ic/ if anyone knows how to help me with this, it'll be you guys.
I've got a new tablet, and it's not a Wacom, It isn't very stable and makes linework arduous, when using Sai I find it nice and easy to make a linework layer and use the curved line tool to nicely boarder my drawings without the mess of doing it by hand.
Does Photoshop have anything like this? If so could sombody tell me how to access it.
Cheers
(also is there any way to increase stability using photoshops settings?)
Using old photoshop so idk if stabilization is in later versions. Here's what i use.

I'd like to use something like this, but I would prefer not to buy anything. Do you know if there is a curved line tool in photoshop? Thats all I need.

Oh shit son! I just properly looked into it and this is exactly what I need! I think my life will finally be complete with this. How can I get it for free?

Hold on, is this a "lol look at this animu artist hiding feet behind socks" or a "I can't draw feet brb ima kms" thread?
Hello, /ic/. First time on /ic/, so I hope all is well with you.
How do I get better at drawing humans? I've tried every method out there, and it just doesn't work. I've kept trying, but I'm starting to get a bit discouraged.
Help, please?
(Note: I draw on my computer, but paper would also help too).

I've always been inspired by pin-up illustrations, fabric pattern art, and vintage ads, that sort of style. What mediums and stylistic tones should I incorporate into it?
>>3091496
What would some good books/guides be?
>>3091497
Loomis literally wrote his books for advertisement artists
modern fashion art has a lot of those sensibilities but you'll find that sort of thing all over.
Digital would probably be best for that sort of thing, it has the flexibility and immediacy to go through various color/patterns/compositions, etc. but honestly its irreverent, just use whatever you enjoy. Using a medium you enjoy will pay its own dividends in how much effort you put into.
