Did you not eat your carrots again today? It's important for artists of the visual medium to protect themselves against macular degeneration and carrots are high in beta-carotene! Make sure to put carrots on your next grocery shopping list.

lmao
/ic/ - roleplaying and feels
i smoke, beta carotene increases risk of lung cancer in smokers. smokerbros watch out
I want to draw from imagination, but at the same time I keep hearing these conflicting messages of "if you wanna draw from imagination you got to practice drawing from imagination" and "never draw from imagination, use references as they don't imprint your mind with mistakes in the future" How do I balance these sentiments and go about drawing and learning as quickly as possible?
Stop thinking about it and just start drawing
When drawing from imagination, incorporate references to make things look grounded or proportionally correct.
Use references as just references. Get a photo of a head but don't copy it exactly (draw your own head).
Also try to draw something via imagination and get it as correct as you can possibly get -> get references -> fix

You can't do that without knowing anatomy.
I've seen a lot of talk surrounding life as a concept artist, designer, comic artist, etc.
But I've rarely seen people talk about becoming a full time Illustrator, how can you? Would you?
>pic unrelated, posting from phone
>>3102235
well personally i dont ave experience as a 'traditional' full time illustrator. I'd say about 70% of the work i do is porn commissions under alias. The other 30% is actual illustration.
The only people who pay illustrators nowadays are usually news organizations/magazines/etc. who want something for their article. But there's not a lot of those out there in comparison to everything else.
It's best to diversify your skill set if anything and do multiple types of work if you don't want to die starving.
Made this piece and sent it off to bad unboxing a few months ago.

hey, that's pretty gay.

cool reddit/instagram tier memes. i hope you do well your freshman year of hs.
>be me
>like anime titties
>like drawing since little kid
>be the talented asian that is good at everything, including drawing and making music
>decides to go for max art stat because everything doesn't interest me anymore
>goes to /ic/ for a year, gets torn to shreds and wastes a lot of time before leaving for awhile to improve
>comes back, is better than 70 percent of /ic/, not bad but not good enough to not get shit on or asked for a blog.
>decides to do the 16 hour a day meme challenge to surpass the d/ic/ks
>slowly starts procrastinating less and less, youtube and other vices become less enjoyable than drawing
>does the no music while working meme, actually fucking works
>starts easily reaching 16 hours a day whereas before would struggle to get to 10 in first week
>basic grind of line warm ups, figure drawing, freehanding cubes, and render practice all in one day rinse and repeat
>4th day in, just ate dinner 4 hours ago, working till 12 and waking up at 4:20 AM like usual when suddenly I feel hungry.
>wtf.jpg
>ignores it and continues schedule
>wake up
>i'm fucking starving.
>i eat breakfeast, and go back to studying...and i get the hunger again
>not this shit again
>a simple chicken sandwhich staves it off till dinner....until it comes back again
>this repeats for the next day as well
>checks weight....not a single fucking ounce gained, i'm still the same average weight average height guy with really fast metabolism
what the fuck is happening to me, /ic/? I can eat a lot more than what a 150 lb 5'10" guy can eat but I've never had hunger like this before? i need to know before i continue with 16 hour meme, i want to to keep doing it but this is annoying as fuck! do i just embrace the snack life and it won't get worse or is this a serious problem?
guys, i need to know this shit. this is driving me insane, i genuinely need a response here
Obviously stress and using your brain too much makes you hungry. That's all there is to it. Just embrace the snack life.
i went for 8 hours and this unironically happened to me. i think i just forgot to eat though, happens during exam times as well.
Hey, Heres my most recent art piece. any critiques?
Hers an edit of it. I thought it was funny.
>>3100453
lol why?
It's visually unclear in some places. For example, I can't tell what the hook-like shape on the face to the right is. You need to include the right details to make it readable. Also, the hand is borked.
I'm new to this side of 4chan. Ever been any graffiti threads?
>>3096325
yea. they die bretty fast. nobody likes you too.
graffiti is shit tier art. worse than anime.
>>3096325
We don't want your kind here
>>3096325
Keep doing it senpai, don't let them tell you what is or isn't art.
I'm going to be painting a paper maché mask today, but I don't know what design I want. Anyone have any ideas?
Pic related, but not my mask. Mine is "flat".
>>3102138
>>3102140
Thanks... I think I might go with this though.
>>3102143
How did you seize upon this?
Any background lovers? Post your favorites, or personal.
Shinji Kimura did some amazing background art for the anime TekkknKinreet. I always enjoy getting lost in his worlds. Personally I think the movie is worth watching for his art alone.
One more Shinji
And a colored
I like Steven Sugar and Jane Bak backgrounds of Steven Universe, I like Studio Guibli/Owari no Seraph too.
Trying to draw realistic anatomy but people just call me pervert...
>>3096822
stop showing it to non-artists then.
>>3096822
Why do you care what other people think
>>3096822
just ignore the virgins and youll be fine
How do you start on a drawing /ic/?
Do you make a shape-skeleton or do you start on details right away?
>>3101151
I do this basically https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0dH4P0jHJA
With some rounded quadrilateral shapes to represent the pelvis and rib cages, then some circles to map out the placement of the joints. If it isn't a doodle or a throwaway sketch, I'll do proper construction.
Gesture, then details, usually for the face
It's very wrong and I have problems with proportions quite a lot. gesture > skeleton is better.
hey /ic/. I have a question about oil painting varnish.
I varnished an oil painting using Utrecht Gloss Oil Varnish yesterday to display in an exhibition. Today, I hung the painting in the gallery, and realized that the varnish I used was wayyy too glossy when we shined gallery light on it.
I wanted to ask if the gloss will get less glossy if I let it dry for a couple more days, and if there are anyways I can remove its glossyness.
Also, I only waited 2 months to varnish because of the show, incase of the usual 6 months if it affect anything.
Thanks
>>3100790
no idea m8, you could try rubbing it back some? carefully of course
otherwise let it shine
>>3100790
it should get less glossy when it's dry in my experience, the only time i've tried to fix something like this i fucked it up though, i tried to strip some of the varnish off with turps, and then apply a matte varnish, but it um..became a mr. bean type situation..or i suppose monkey jesus is the more timely reference
We always discuss amateur and frankly too modern stuff on /ic/.
Can we all have some nice historical paintings and discussions about art from the 1900s and before.
Post your favorite artworks/periods.
Dutch flower still lifes are the best still lifes and no one can prove that fact wrong.
Anyone here tried Schoolism? What did you think of it? I'm interested in learning from Jason Seiler.
I went through his portraiture series. It's basically seven videos (with ten chapters each) of basically "take your time and measure better." You are unironically better off reading Keys to Drawing or something. Even with his homework feedback portion (which costs extra?) there's little substance to it with his critique. He is a crazy good artist but I don't think he's a good teacher.
>>3101941
thanks for your thoughts; I'm actually interested in his caricature series, since I already understand portraiture quite well.
I see it's $15 for a month, how many months did it take for you to work through all your videos? Can you download them all at once then cancel your subscription?
>>3101956
I actually took them seriously and went along with the homework (for my own benefit, i didn't sign up for critique) and for the first two or three lessons it took me a week or so, but back then I was painting for 5-6 hours a day so that may play a factor. The first couple are not so long. When I realized that I wasn't learning anything I sort of fell off.
You don't need to take my word for it. Check it out and see if it's for you, maybe his caricature stuff is presented differently. There is no "download" button but you can use OBS to record your screen and then play the video in hd. If you sign up for just a day they might get suspicious anyway.
been working on this for a while now, critique?
ur not god
you obv. dont understand art
I know this is above average
I'd work more on body proportions if I was you.
