That's it. That's the thread. I've got a good collection but Im always looking for more.
How do you actually go about promoting AND selling your artwork on Instagram?
I know the method of getting lots of likes and followers is to draw fan art, what is trending right now (actors, music, movies, shows). But that stuff doesn't sell well does it? I am actually genuinely curious how many people buy prints or originals of famous peoples faces...
But when you want to make a living from your art, is fan art the way to go? I don't feel like it is, not if you want your artistic name to have any weight and merit with it...
So how does one go about selling and promoting art on Instagram?
PS; the whole hyper realistic fan art feels so unoriginal, so uninspired and so over done. Instagram is saturated with it, its so rare to see something cool that stands out.
I've bought/commissioned art from people on Instagram AND my gf makes her living off Instagram. So I feel like I might have an inkling of insight from both sides. Talking as a consumer. You are right. Hyper realistic stuff (at least to me) is bullshit. If I wanted hyperrealistic I'd take a picture. Fanart is cool but I'm sick to fucking death of looking at Stephen Universe and the Gems on my feed now. What I want as consumer is the artist's style. One of my favorite artists said something along the lines of "draw and draw and draw and when you're sick of drawing draw some more and in some drawings you'll notice maybe you liked the way you drew the eyes or the hands and next time you will draw it in a similar fashion. After enough time you'll have a whole body and it'll be your own style." That's what's cool and stands out and what I want in my house framed up on my wall.
Insider tips as seller from gf: it's not pandering to masses that gets you followers. It's all in the hashtags. Hashtag the shit out of it. Nobody will find you in sea of posts if you don't put out a beacon. Once you start getting a following you'll show up in the feed of your friends and then friends of friends and it'll go from there. Post regularly but post the good stuff. Instagram is a portfolio. Leave your hard work and practice offline or on a Tumblr or something.
Best of luck Anon. And of course, the obligatory "draw what YOU like".
P.S. How much for that Christopher Walken?
>>3108710
its amazing how something that shit is so obviously christopher walken
>>3108720
Thanks for the tips. I never wanted to be one to pander to the public so I'm good there.
I've read that each thing you post should have about 10-15 hashtags, and only if they relate to what you post, is that what you mean when you say "hashtag the shit out of it"??
Also any chance I could see your gf's account please?
I should've mentioned that the Walken pic isn't related, I just googled bad portraits and it was one of the first results.

Is being trained academically the best way to learn how to draw? When I look at academic art, it's always something at a high level that not everybody could do.
>>3112011
That's because you don't see the bad ones. It's nothing special just a lot of drawing and observation. It's keys to drawing multiplied by a thousand.
It takes weeks to finish a drawing and then, no one wants to buy it
>>3112011
the best way to learn how to draw is to learn how to learn. watch pros draw as much as possible, conciously think about the choices they make. understand values, edges, perspective. study your basic fundamentals until you can draw/render basic forms/ideas like loomis heads from memory. then keep practicing it. doesnt really matter where you go to learn, as it really comes down to the effort you put in. thats why, no matter what school, theres always some alumni that are great and some that arent

its a ok reference. Not for lighting and color though, but for beauty standards, relationship between the features.
I want all the critique you can think of before I finish this. Hit me!
>>3112686
Not that bad, but very amateurish. You want to jump in and start designing and painting cool shit, I understand, but you have to catch up on the foundation - line quality, perspective and form, values and basic rendering skills.
It will boost both your experience of the process and the final result.

How anime studios accomplish such vivid colors with only one single layer of shading?
I've tried using multiply, shade, overlay layers with many different combination of colors and always some color ends up looking odd.
i.e. shading with blue/gray-ish tones makes skin color look grey, using red-ish colors makes blue/black/purple color shades look bright brown.
Just choose the right color lol
>>3112339
shadows on multiply
airbrush some areas for variety
up the contrast when you're done
probably have premade palettes for every scene
looks like they use gradients/airbrush as well
and of all good art on the internet to study from, some outsourced seasonal cashgrab anime... techniques they use here are cheap why would you want to replicate this
I recently have started the process of applying to fashion design school, and the require that you submit a portfolio. I was curious about what exactly they would be looking for, and what kind of pieces it would be best to include or leave out.
On a related note, I've also been somewhat curious about the overall quality of peoples portfolios that they have gotten into artschool with, because most modern art seems like shit.
>>3112138
If you're going to apply for fashion design you should be able to exhibit adequate drawing of both the figure and drapery. Naturally, you should look at the art of fashion designers for an idea of what they're looking for.
If this picture you've submitted, which features a woman that's wafer thin (and I don't mean in an idealized way) and probably just over 4 heads tall represents your best work you need to keep practicing before you even bother applying. Don't go to the school unless you're good enough to get a healthy scholarship and definitely don't go without looking at student portfolio shows.
>>3112163
The picture I posted is probably best described as "the best work I had actually on my computer." I took a costume design course as an elective for my last degree, from which I'll probably include a few pictures.
Would that hinder my progress in any shape or form?
>>3112125
no, you improve with things stored in your brain, not your computer
>>3112126
Yeah, but wouldn't that help you remember shit. Like for example, let's say I did some figure studies. If I look back on it 2 weeks from now, I can say find flaws on what was wrong with it and try to think about ways to improve upon it the next time I did figure work. It can also help you retain your information. Because studies are like class notes. Rereading class notes will help you on a test.
