How can one get so good? How long do you have to grind shit for this?
86 posts and 12 images submitted.

It's pretty high level. Could easily take a decade to get there, but to be honest 99% of people never even approach it. Also you don't get there by grinding, you get there by putting a lot of thought into every piece and studying deliberately. Grinding implies mindless repetition.

You can't think for 16 hours a day, yet you see people telling that it's necessary to do that much work

I call it "2014". Just a quick sketch. Do I have potential?

It's a quick sketch, m8! I got proportions right. And moreover - I had a vision. A concept. A lot of skillful artists can picture talking dog or some girl. But they lack ideas!

>tfw trying to make an honest living and career out of illustration
>that gradual realization that this career is really made for rich art student kids and fanatical asians, and that there's very little place for uneducated american poor fag unless you're willing to starve yourself
>even if you get a job to sustain yourself the amount of effort expendature means you'll never have time to do much of anything and it will take years for you to go anywhere

N-no that can't be true.

Where did you get that idea?

I think you're just tricking yourself and thinking wrong about it.

How else are we supposed to become successful illustrators?
>>
>>2891850
It's an oversaturated market, and if you don't have the passion and determination to work yourself to the bone for fun then you probably won't make it. Congrats for realizing sooner rather than later. Now you can either step up your game or quit and cry about having no other skills to fall back on.

PS: You don't need to be a god at art to make a living. You need to be solid and then have connections.

Do any of you do them? How do you deal with that business tax number mostly all cons want? Do you even get them? I stopped doing AAs years ago when they started to be required, because I don't pay taxes since I'm below poverty level, on SSI, and all around autistic-retarded. I wouldn't even make a lot at cons since I generally suck. I'd usually make around $250 and I felt like the tax thing would confuse my disabled dumbass and complocate the ssi payments. However, I'm really poor and could use the extra $250/month so I'm contemplating doing some AAs again, yet the business tax number has me worried. By no means could my art suffice as a business. I just take a couple commissions every so often.

Tough scene. Seen a lot of younger artists get torn up, meaning lose a lot of money and gain little to no profit.
Fanart does sell, but that doesn't mean fanart will sell. Having a particular style that's appealing is also key.
There's a difference between "good art" and "good art that will sell".

The most important thing is that making art isn't about making money.
Also I don't know how to answer your question because I'm from another country so rules are different.
Can't you place this work under hobby or personal interest? Unless you make a job out of conventions, you won't earn enough for a full business number.
>>
>>2892817
That's what I thought, but cons ask you to enter your tax number in when applying and they say they will check at the con to make sure you have one. It's really daunting
>>
Yuropoor doing C2E2 Chicago next month, should be interesting. I have some pre-commissions lined up and will be doing busts/head sketches on the day as well as selling some comics

I already started making money. More than I have ever done in my life.

The problem is that the pressure to perform stifles my creativity.

I can stop giving a fuck about art and just release the first thing that comes out, but that's not why I became an artist. I wanted to create worlds, not be a salesman.

Can we all laugh at the current state of Shadman?

By most accounts here's what we know; he's barely working anyone and playing games most of the time while getting free money for Patreon idiots, he barely posts anymore and instead JLul had taken over the site posting nothing but toddlers getting fucked by black men and people are saying how he refuses to answer any Patreon rewards and never opens messages or answers his paying fans back and lastly he aside from not working on his own stuff has become to resort on other artists sketching ideas out for him because he's too lazy.

What a fucking loser.

Any architecture afficionados here? I draw characters as well, but lately I've become interested in things like designing houses and public spaces. I'd like to learn more about the topic and maybe 3D model something on my own.

There was a comic called Cerebus the Aardvark that featured a secondary artist who crammed elaborate backgrounds around the Creator's figures. He still is at it,and its a good place to start for another artist's take on architecture.

modern art seems easy to draw but shit like cathedrals has so much detail to it, I just don't have the patience it takes to make them look well.

BOOO HOOO I HAVE NO MOTIVATION D^;

I am 22 years old and I was thinking about serious drawing. By serious I mean a full-fledged career as an illustrator but it seems like it's too late to start. I keep reading about people who get their first jobs at 20 or something and I am now 22 with very little skills. Also a lot of competitive and over saturated market bullshit, what should I do? Remember, it's not a hobby for me.
