FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.
there. kick rocks.

I asked this in /beg/ but then I realized it's probably big enough of a question to talk about in its own thread.

Why the hell is it that a shit ton of art instructors say to draw these incredibly precise, well thought out lines, but then none of them do it?

Look at Proko. I know he's a meme now for whatever reason, but damn it, he's good at drawing from life. Anyways, if you look at his video on pencil control, he advocates for the aforementioned quick and smooth lines. But then you look at his timelapses and shit, and he's doing chicken scratches and shit.

Hell, it's everywhere. Concept instruction books like Scott Robertson talk about these smooth lines, but nine times out of ten none of them do it.

So what the fuck, /ic/?

>>
>>2948452
Proko doesn't chicken scratch you retard. There is nothing wrong with ghosting and going over your lines. You are not meant to draw everything from a single stroke.
>>
It's ok to do it when you're sketching because no one is going to see those messy sketches anyway. It's only practice, you're building skills.

When you're doing a final piece it's important to be able to or at least make it seem like you're drawing clean curves and lines in one continuous line. Roberston for example ghosts it over until he gets it right, sometimes he draws curves bit by bit, but what's important here is the result; it looks like clean, it flows, it shows form.
>>
>>2948452
I think a lot of them do actually use it though? Look at Proko's life drawing and the only thing you can say is it looks very controlled. Scott Robertson same thing with his designs.

Also keep in mind that teachings and things in practice may not align perfectly, since the taught approach is more of an ideal or a good way to think about it. Having cleaner controlled lines is generally something you want to aim towards, even if you are not always doing it due to time constraints or some other reason. Also without practicing those things like ellipses and clean lines, Robertson would be doing way cruder linework than he does at the moment.

Also some teachings are designed in ways that may seem concrete or like how things "should" be, but really it's just shown that way to counteract some common bad habits of beginners, and in reality it's not actually as concrete a rule or approach once you are advanced.

What are some of the best ways to capture a drawing from people walking around, or even at a cafe?

I'm not worried about "getting caught", but rather, some people move around so quickly it's so difficult to grab their action cause I'm so used to models standing still for 1+ minutes.

What's a way to approach drawing people around you?

>draw people in subways or cafes so they will stay relatively still for a few minutes at least
>think like an animator, just get a loose interpretation that captures the gestures
>work on a few at once so that if someone moves you work on another, and often the first person will return to the original pose after a while, then you return to that drawing
>just keep doing it for a while and you will slowly get better at it
>>
Thanks for the input. Will do.
>>
Don't worry too much about capturing exactly what you see, if you someone walking, just go ahead and begin the gesture as quickly as you can and then observe them to learn the details of their form and clothing to layer ontop of that

Hey, im currently looking at this painting by Craig Mullins and i really loved the way he solved the background that is neither plain texture or plain drawn heads, but just a collection of very well placed colored dots. Is there any theory behind approaching art like this? or do you just have to be craig mullins to do it?

>Is there any theory behind approaching art like this

It's just contrast - not of contrasting values or colors, but of level of detail.

It works well because the "noise" of the crowd is very well juxtaposed next to the flatter, simpler values of the foreground and distant ruins.

Just like contrasting colors, lineweight, values, etc, contrasting levels of details can be another technique used to direct the eye around a composition.

That kind of simplification is often referred to as "indication".
To indicate something is to give the impression of something. A common use for this term is material indication but it can apply to anything, ofcourse.

While you retards on /ic/ are drawing wonky boxes and chicken scratchy floating figures, successful people are already developing an appealing style and getting their work out there to the masses.

You think normies give a shit if you drew one of the forearm extensors wrong you dumb fucking cucks? What people want is appeal. An area that lacks greatly from what I've seen on the trash posted on this board.

Quit wasting your time with muh loomis and learn how to actually draw something appealing you fucking losers.

pic related is an example of appeal with no fundamentals. And guess what? Normies love that shit.
40 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2947809
Do that if you want to draw for normies. Do Loomis and boxes if you are drawing for yourself.
>>
>>2947809
What if I told you not every artist cares about impressing normies? It's all about what your goal in art is and people have different goals.

If your goal is to be one of these countless casuals who draw weebshit to feed of normies admiration, do what you want to do.

If your goal is to work for Riot Games making splash art, impressing normies with your casual art is the last thing you think about.

As for appeal, its a matter of taste. I can see why people would find art like in your pic appealing, but personally that's not what I'm interested in.

Dear d/ic/ks,

While this board provides a vast variety of resources and is most certainly a good starting point for the aspiring artists, there are some major issues I would like to address. Subsequently I will propose to you a possible solution for these problems.

Now, before I go deeper into the material, I would like you to know, that I highly value this websites policy of free speech and anonymity. That said, I feel like absolute anonymity is ultimately a hindrance for a supportive art community and here is why:

1. Board Moderation
Not only do we have a lot of threads popping up that go against the board rules, we also have threads that are going against this site's global rules! Meme and bash threads make up a good thirdd of /ic/, with another third being obsolete due to our generals. I don't mind threads that showcase certain artists and discuss them and I don't mind someone asking for critique or a general question in their own thread, if they provide enough basis for a discussion. Sadly those threads tend not to try to learn from other artists, but to ridicule them ("Why is blank suck a hack?"/ "tumblr hate thread" etc.) and the questions are not insightful but either memes ("Do I have the spark?"/ "When did you realize you ngmi?" etc.) or simply stupid ("How to draw like blank?"/ "Why is blank so hard to draw?"). I appeal to you /ic/ moderators, to either take your job a tad more seriously or pass the buck to some more competent individuals.

2. Spreading of Misinformation/ Deliberate Disencouragement
Be it due to a lack of knowledge or the overestimation of oneselves abilities, there is a lot of half-baked advice on this board; Critiques that try to impress with academic language and the mentioning of names, but ultimately lack in content. I am unsure if these persons just indulge in showing off, or if they genuinely want to help others, but in the end their advice is not constructive and in rare cases even harmful for the artist.
While a critique can be written in an attempt to mock the artist, the critic, as they bear no grudge against the artist, has no motive to disencourage them from drawing. This, however changes, when the critique is disregarded by the artist - be it for legit reasons or not. In this case, the artist will ask to see the critic's work, which will either result in a spiteful bashing of said work (regardless of their quality), or the critic claiming they do not need to show off technical expertise to help out with their observation and theoretical knowledge on the field of illustration.
A way to prevent the "show your work" dilemma and spread of misinformation would be the introduction of identification tags for this board. This way it's up to the artist wether to accept a critique or not, without explicitly asking for ones work. It will also prevent the spreading of misinformation to a certain degree. Furthermore ID tags will most likely regulate spiteful posts in general, thus we will have less gossip threads and less anons posing as other artists for /ic/ to bash them.

What are your thoughts on the introduction of identification tags for this board?

https://strawpoll.com/x5wbsz7
>>
>>2945901
1. Could you have made this thread without the /pol/ influence? With this alone you have just singled out you're part of the problem.

2. It's just one person. Half the board is aware of this person and their style of trolling.

3.
>Furthermore ID tags will most likely regulate spiteful posts in general

This has been discussed already. A poll wont change this. If it gets enough negatives you'll just claim someone stuffed the ballots like last time. The people all for IDs are secretly the shitposters themselves.

The stickies already provide valuable resource. Nobody is misinforming anyone.
>>
>>2945905
>The stickies already provide valuable resource. Nobody is misinforming anyone.
There's a ton of misinformation on /ic/ though. But I think a huge amount of this is not actual trolling but just ignorance and blind leading the blind, so you can't really fix that too easily.

If Art is making you feel terrible because you can't tolerate your current skill level: you should consider if Art is something you actually want to pursue or whether your actual appetite is mastery of a skill. If your passion is being good at Art then that is irreconcilable with your current opinion of it, and perhaps if it is mastery of Art that you want to achieve: you could try another more non-representational hobby such as conceiving music or writing literature, as both indirectly feature the facility to create visualization to some capacity

But if you're certain that you want to be an Artist: I can tell you anecdotally that it helps to become consistent, and to start with exchanging your current, seemingly hectic schedule for something more manageable might be a useful start. Consider making a syllabus for your Art, or maybe vowing to draw for a certain amount of time every day. Anecdotally: being more consistent has rejuvenated my capacity for enjoyment of visual experience (and also helps me feel less indolent); I'm sure it would for you too

Also: stop using Youtube to watch intensely structured Media, and instead consider using it to listen to music. Find a genre that you really like and listen to that. Alternatively: go outside and sketch en plein air; take no devices with you
