So I've been practicing daily for 3 years now and I've gotten pretty good at drawing anime. I've mostly been posting my work on a public blog and I always get messages about how people say I improved so much blah blah and they can't wait to see more progress from me. When I initially started my blog, I posted all my work but overtime I started posting less and less because people were expecting better work so in order to meet that demand i posted only my best stuff.

Anyway, lately I want to get out of my comfort zone. I normally post animations and rough sketches but now I want to paint but I just can't bring myself to do it. There are these thoughts in the back of my head that go "Oh, he's been at this for 3 years and his painting skills are still so trash, wow what an autistic loser" I'm sure not EVERYONE is gonna think like that but still I can't get it out of my head.

Initially, everything I drew was shit so I didn't care either way but now that I've developed a comfort zone, it's hard to stray from it. Thoughts?

If I don't plan on uploading it then I have no reason to make it in the first place. For me, art is an expression. There is no point in expressing yourself if you're gonna keep it to yourself.

Speed comes with experience. Don't worry about it and keep working.

No one really cares about how long you take unless you're doing commissions and take months to communicate with your client.
I'm sure you're not in that stage yet so there's nothing to worry or be jealous about.

Side note, a lot of artists lie about the time a drawing took them. Some would label a finished looking piece as a "quick doodle". Don't think about it too much.

There's this Tumblr trend going on right now defending cringy weeaboo/furry behavior and art among other things. It probably partially stems from people finding out that Rebecca Sugar drew self-insert Invader ZIM fanart when she was younger. I'm not a fan of this type of coddling but at the same time, people who constantly shit on cringy art tend to be cringy themselves.

I'm trying to find resources that explain the techniques behind pic related. Why are their under drawings so loose and why do so many Japanese artists have such loose under drawings (with the final result looking really solid) or sketches?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>3122990
It's called exploration.
>>
>>3122990
These aren't really under drawings, just sketches.

But anyway, the secret to using loose under drawings is to draw lots of lines when doing them, and knowing which lines to follow (or when to make a new line) when inking.

Obviously a good grasp of inking techniques is also extremely helpful.

incorrectly**, wrong is inelegant
or, you could have also gone with 'wrong' and then 'right' possibly, but 'wrong' and 'well', ew.

otherwise i think it's a good piece, the central composition together with the mathematical plus sign gives the impression that this is a simple formula that anyone could follow, the colour choices, a stark dichotomy with white negative space and black text also reminds us of the simple worksheet-like nature of the classroom.

nice job.
>>
>>3121225
My COM101 instructor would tell us, "when giving critique, tell the person 2 things theyve done right and 1 thing they can improve on." I think /ic/ should do this in my opinion
>>
>>3121235
i think that can be a bit of an error with teaching art because art isn't very concrete.

sure you can point out errors and good bits, but a lot of the 'problems' a person can have with art are things like insipidity and incongruity, so you need to point out what things are 'medium' too, and in actually like most cases errors aren't as important as getting rid of the lame stuff.

I don't even hate it, I just don't understand why it triggers people so much. There are loads of people who are much worse and much better and don't get nearly as many responses, so why this person?

ic likes to pick on people who post the same shit every day because "you don't improve" is another valid excuse to justify what they say. but when you realize drawing is a better use of your time than flaming someone, you realize everyone in the situation is retarded.

The problem with this website is that they act like everyone wants to become a working professional. They almost can't comprehend that some people just want to do it as a hobby.

Okay guys, normally I am not a fan of Apple products. I generally think they're overpriced and lacking a little fuctionally. That said, I'm thinking of buying an iPad pro and apple pencil. Any digital artists here who have used it and can talk me into or out of it? I would appreciate any advice.

I use it when I travel, and it's not bad, suffices as a tablet and medibang paint has all the tools I can ask for.
However, keep in mind that
>there are no physical buttons on this thing and the pensil designed for artists, thus all left hand actions are performed via touch-controls and it kinda sucks desu. I didn't know how much I loved the physical buttons on the Cintiq before, being able to feel which button you're pressing makes a huge difference when you're not looking.
>Also you can't multitask when you are drawing.
>such as watch a video or take look at chats(with commissoners or workgroups for feedback i guess).
>Having to switch to another screen for taking screenshots, cropping them and sending a sample feels a tad tedious.
It gets the job done though, the things I listed are merely little problems I ran into while trying to work solely on an ipad.
>>
>>3118880
Yeah I had heard about using it as a display which was one of the things that got me really thinking about it. >>3118909
Isn't there also a keyboard or something you can connect to it? Seems like that would solve the no buttons problem.

Gerhard richter- oil on color photograph

Is this kind of work prohibited

This is how I see it, if you know how to paint you are free to experiment in every possible way like Richter did and many artists before him, but if you don't know how to paint then I won't take your experiments seriously.

I don't really understand his latest work, or at least the squidgy lines and wot-not.

I watched a film on him and he said none of it really meant anything and he didn't see any of the money anyway. He blew his myth right out of the window, which as quite good of him really.

Any ideas on what I could draw to fill up the page in the same theme as that raven (dark, creepy, etc.)? I knew this was going to happen so I wanted a smaller sketchbook but unfortunately the art store I went to only had A4 and A3 sketchbooks. :/

Also some freak embryos maybe? If that's your thing
>>
It's very cliche but a graveyard with a Chapple on a hill or a hanging tree
>>
>>3121558
signifying death is the typical approach with all visualization of ravens, why not swap the usual thought and go the light route with life being the way to go.

that being said if you are set on the whole dark side, i see a raven and i think back to the time where it was gothic era. so maybe like one sitting on a lamp post attached to a building, or some shit.... although now looking at this, youd need to redo the whole pic so i guess there are some ideas

Is it possible to paint like this on Sai?

When should I use gesso for my oil painting paper? What all does gesso do?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>3122924
You should use it if the paper doesn't have any, or if you want to create textures with it to paint over.

Gesso is a primer, that serves two purposes: a base for the paint to stick to, so your painting doesn't chip, flake or crack off the board/paper/canvas, and to provide a white background to work on.
>>
>>3122924
Most pre-primed surfaces could use a couple coats of gesso on top tbqh. On paper especially (even expensive Arches Oil paper) the first layer of painting tends to be really uncomfortable, gesso helps with that.
