I would look at 3D.

Fushion 360

Cinema 4D.

You should look at Modo and Zbrush. Vaughan Ling has some decent tutorials.

At least pick up Zbrush, if you look at FZD school even they have a lot of Zbrush work in there course in term 2 and 3.

Concept artist are using more and more 3D. I would look at Vitaly as someone to aim for.

Any tips for eye strain? I would have 2-3 good months than get severe eye strain, pain, dryness etc that would last a month or 2. I went to a eye doctor and I started taking RESTASIS® and my eyes got better. I thought I was in the clear, now they are as painful as ever and it's hard to work like this.

Any tips? I'm sick of my eyes always in pain and out of focus.

^- Listen to this. Golden info.

If you just increase the distance you work at, it will decrease the strain on your eyes by a significant degree. Try it.

If shitty art like this can be accepted as legitimate concept art then what's stopping YOU from making it big in the industry?

This guy was employed TWICE by Capcom to design for the Resident Evil franchise.
How many times have you been employed by Capcom to design for a Resident Evil game, eh anon?

Any tips or lessons specifically about the outer borders of the picture? A composition lesson from Famous Artist's Course mentions that you should crop objects in part so that the picture feels part of a greater whole and other little things, but when I look at my stuff I'm never satisfied with how it's cropped. I'm usually satisfied with the composition WITHIN the picture, I feel okay with avoiding tangents, having contrasting values and all that stuff (not saying I'm good at it, just that I don't feel completely at a loss when I look at how I've composed the picture). It's just the fucking frame of the picture that drives me nuts.

Hope I explained myself, maybe I'm just being extremely autistic about it.

I'd rather not post my work here, sorry about that.

There's not very much to critique here besides the fact that it's a parody of an iconic work based on a famous photograph. I can't quite tell what the symbolism is meant to represent besides to be very offensive to both America and Japan. Around 25,000 people died at this battle. I wouldn't attach my name to this if I were you.

Has anyone ever tried to charge you back on paypal? Is it prevalent? Did you manage to dispute and get the money back?

>charge you back on paypal
I thought that only works if the payment hasn't gone through?
>>
>>2988041
You can't dispute it because Paypal doesn't technically protect your work. You'd have to send a physical copy.

>>2988093
A commissioner can put a claim that they didn't receive any product from you and paypal will roll back the payment since you can't defend it.

I have had one person do this.
During a transaction the risk isn't divided in equal parts, the artist is carrying most of the risk. If you're working with individuals then always take full payment in advance, because even when you do they still sort of have a hand on it, they haven't let go completely. They're protected by paypal while you are protected by good will.
>>
>>2988041
>>2988107
useful tip is to only take commissions from people who have some kind of establishment online (if you can afford to be picky with your clients). doesn't have to be someone with a thousand followers, or whatever, just some form of indication that they're not some complete random person from the internet. a good sign is if they have multiple examples of previously commissioned work from different artists.

if they can't disappear into the night with your work this lessens the chance of them intentionally trying to fuck you over because you could then just spread word to other artists that they will try to slither out of payment, effectively blacklisting them from getting more work. tho even if they don't have some name online, paypal gives enough info in the payment section that you could warn others to be wary of this person should they see the same info pop up. good site to check would be artists beware
http://artists-beware.livejournal.com/

another good habit to get into is invoicing your paypal payments to clients, making sure to jump through whatever the current hoops paypal has at the moment to make it clear that you're being paid for a service, not a good, and therefore there is no shipping label required that could come back to beef you in the booty

I've always wanted to learn how to "make art" but ever since I was a child it was pretty clear I sucked at it, even in middle school art class my projects looked like I had gotten a toddler to do it. Lately I've been feeling the desire to take another crack at learning to draw/paint/compose art, but there's one catch...

Recently I learned I have a fairly common(occurs in 1-3% of the gen pop) brain condition known as Aphantasia. Basically it means I don't have any visual imagination in my head and that reality has really started to crush my dreams. Does anyone else here have a similar condition and if so can you give advice and prove it's possible for even a retard like me to learn art.

If there isn't anyone like that I want to ask you regular people of /ic/; how much you rely on mental visualization when drawing? Do you use it extensively to build up a finished version of the drawing in your mind or do you draw more one line at a timeusing pen on paper construction based on subvisual feelings? Do you think I have a chance at doing anything worth while, or should I just give up on my unrealistic dreams now?

Well if you cant imagine shit in pictures just imagine it in words and describe it through drawing. Its the same as describing a picture in words, I suppose. Also its easier to visualize something when its on a piece of paper, I dont really know what I mean when I say that, but it makes sense to me. Just dont make any excuses, if you draw 10 hours a day for 10 years youll probably find something out.
>>
>>2988027
Also I think that most artist barely have any idea of what theyre doing in the beginning of a piece. As an example, this video in which he starts just with a simple body in 3/4s, and then tries to find where the arm will go.

Well thanks for the suggestions anon. I guess I'll give it a shot, If I really can't progress I could always commit seppuku or something.

There's no right or wrong, only opinion. I use Photoshop because I've been using it professionally since version 2.5, I know it inside and out, and I'm comfortable with it.

For basic drawing, it's way overkill. If you can afford it, great, if not, don't sweat it.

I've always liked Painter, despite it's price, but if you want a deep painting simulation, it can't be beat.

The free and cheap alternatives posted here are fine, too, as long as the toolset is what you need, and you're comfortable and get things done.

Having said that, if you have any professional ambition, most places will have Photoshop licenses, so you should be comfortable with the basic toolset.
