Traditional is good, but if you want to branch out to digital invest in a Wacom or that chinese brand people keep recommending.

If it's the spots giving you trouble, you can use photoshop trickery to get that done. Paint the gecko as if it were spotted blue. Create a layer group with a mask, and fill the mask with the shapes of the spots. Inside the group folder you can add level adjustments, hue adjustments etc until you get the colored spots you want. Paint some final touch up by hand if needed. Really there's a ton of ways to go about it
