How come they called it the holy Roman empire when it wasn't holy, Roman or an empire?
I'm sure you already know this, but that soundbite was said after the empire had decayed into a sad collection of german princedoms surrounding austria.
It was a little bigger when it started.
It was Holy Roman Empire at one point, but then Germans unrelated to Charlemagne claimed succession and proceeded to make it a loose collection of vaguely defined German Kingdoms fighting over which one of them gets to rule it. It was alright while Spain was in charge for a while but then crumbled under its own inefficiency, dragging Spain down in the process.
