Toyotomi Hideyoshi was born the son of a minor-samurai (quite possibly more like a peasant levy) who started off without much, educated himself, started off bringing people's sandals, and eventually became one of the most important figures in Japanese history.

Not quite as impressive since he started off in the lower gentry but I've always enjoyed Oliver Cromwell's rise to power too.
