>tfw French soldier during The Seven Years war
>tfw renacting the French and Indian war next week

These are good feels

I'm glad someone revived this thread. Although I was surprised my last one survived as long as it did. Does anyone do any reenacting in the greater New York area or within 3-4 hours of that area?
>>
Obligatory 60th rifles re-enactor that always shitposts about the 60th reporting in!
Pic: A painting of two of our members done by Christina Hook, who is one of Ospreys main illustrators.

Waterloo 200 re-enactment where the corn(?) was just thigh height, this picture explains why some of the shorter highlanders were giggling like little girls as they marched through it.

If anyone has any reference images that'd be great.

Hi
>>
>>669014
What period?
>>
>>669017

Wars of the Roses and early Tudor.
>>
>>669033
Nice. Any pics of kit? I want to do a Germanic mercenary in the late 1400's. Where did you start when piecing together your gear?
>>
>>669215

Buy the Osprey book and work from there, trying to find more specialised information and books relevant to your interest. Then go to a reenactment market and buy or make suitable stuff.
>>
>>669222

Do you have a full suit of armor? If so is everything bought bespoke from a blacksmith? I have everything from vikings to the Civil War where I live but of course nothing in the late 15th century. There's a group doing early 15th century and a group doing 16th century Landsknechts, fucking typical. Feels bad man.
>>
>>669001
Thanks bro. I wanted to do something unique so I am currently putting together an IJA anti-aircraft gunner impression. It'd be useful for all of the airshows around here that like to bring in reenactors.
>>

Is reenactment a valid form of historiography? Is it experimental archaeology/larp?
>>
>>668101
I remember how the pussy Canadians had to cancel the 250 year anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham because the Quebecois threw a tantrum and threatened to murder everyone involved.

If they tried the same thing in the United States, there would be a French hanging from every tree.
>>
>>668791
We have the largest medieval festival in the southern hemisphere here if that counts.

IJAfag here again. Bullshit akin to that actually does happen in the states, in fact, some happened in our World War II community. Long story short, a couple of people got butt hurt over stupid shit (dunno exact details, people are playing telephone with all this) and decided to doxx approximately 500 reenactors from multiple units - some outside the states including at least one unit in SEA region. I'm not sure how much targeted activity went on towards those people afterwards, but everyone is pissed off.
>>
>>670406
The main aim is portrayal of the chosen period to the public, raises awareness of the history in that area, etc.
There can be elements of experimental archaeology in it depending on the aim of the group and/or individual.
DO NOT confuse with LARPING that is fantasy bullshit

Not really, I asked the question and I'm a reenactor, trying to create discussion and shit.

I mostly do it because there's certain aspects you can't appreciate unless you experience it, equipment weight, etc. I particularly enjoy knowing that most if the people you educate, despite reenactment being inherently kind of flawed, would have otherwise never have interacted with history
>>
Regarding the LARP question, I have gotten asked that before too, and my answer will be, no, they are different things. However I will specify some reenactments are less scripted than most people think. WWII events' public battles at least, in my experience, sometimes turn out with unexpected victories because of the combination of your allies being really good and the opponent being gracious enough to take their hits like real soldiers.

I'm not sure how the musket-era reenactors do it though, because of the line marching tactics I assume they draw lots before hand as to who dies in what order, but I can't be sure.

>Select all images of Palm Trees
Oddly specific
>>
What's the situation with later Roman/Byzantine reenacting? Kind of curious about it but not sure if it's all Augustan legionaries for the most part. In the UK if it matters.
>>
>>672584
The vast majority of what I see is largely first century, although I have seen a few third and later people, no eastern though.
>>
>>671119
Would this be Reading airshow at the mid Atlantic by any chance?
My favorite event, been going every year with my group.
>>
>>672782
Ah shame, as I feared then. Third century sounds pretty interesting mind.

As someone who used to do American Civil War, it's either by lots, your unit commander telling you to do it, or you feel like taking one.

Depends on the unit and event.
>>
All reenactment is LARP. Are you really a knight? No. Are you really a US Marine storming Iwa Jima? No. Are you really a Roman legionary? No. Do you actually chop people up with axes? No. Do you really shoot people with rifles? No.

You're playing a role and operated under a preagreed rule system for combat, to a live audience, either members of the public or fellow reenactors. It's LARP, just with one more rule: Be authentic to X time period.

I've been looking into WWI reenacting since I was like 16. 22 now, I'm afraid to take the plunge

>Obsessed with the Civil War
>Own a whole bookcase of lit on the subject
>Lurk /his/ mainly for Civil War threads
>Listen to mostly Civil War era tunes
>Own several rifled, percussion cap musket reproductions

>Desperately want to get into reenacting
>Too chubby and short to accurately portray a Civil War soldier
Shitskin genes are a curse. Fuck my life.
>>
>>673108
What brand of shitskin are you? Indians and negroes fought in the Civil War. Also take a look at people reenacting, its mostly old fat fudds.
>>
>>673318
I'm white with Mexican on my Dad's side. I'm pretty much white as fuck (people look at me funny when I tell them my Dad is Mexican), but i'm a 5'8" manlet who literally cannot loose weight. I eat right and exercise, but I still look like a fucking pumpkin with legs. I'm about 100% sure it's my shitskin genes because everyone on my fathers side is short and fat, while everyone on my Mom's side is tall and skeltal mode.

And anyways, if i'm going to portray a Civil War soldier, id'e like to look the part at least somewhat. I'm pretty sure (particularly if were talking Confederates) the average Civil War soldier would have been fit as fuck seeing as they lived on shit rations and marched 20 miles a day.
>>
>>673108

You sound like typical American.
>>
>>668068
I'm going to get an internship at a local live history museum as probably a reenactor. Wish me luck, /his/
>>
>>668791
I'm trying to get into Dark Age, does that count, or just true medieval?
I really want to do migration era (or maybe even late Roman) Britain/Ireland, but it looks like I'll have to go Viking, since that's the closest thing I can find around me.
>>
>>670406
I think it depends on the group and their standards. Could be either.
>>
>>673105
Find a group and do it, I did that last summer and I haven't looked back!
>>
>>673063
>Are you really a knight? No
I guess not that style.

Rethink this
>>
>>672808

Different guy than you're replying to but I am there every year. 2015's drama was really bad though, so we might not go this year. Meaning no PTO battles unless someone on the outside helps us.

>Most of our troops got doxxed by a bootybothered KMT and his buttbuddies
>Some of ours have been bullied straight out of the hobby as a result of this reckless faggotry
>>
Accidentally left bayonet in the garage, cleaning the rust off, when will this hell end.

I do Napoleonic currently, like the 60th faggots. I kind of want to do ww2 German, but I'm a bit reluctant because of a few reasons. Extra price, knowledge of the period isnt good enough, and I think reenacting ww2 (particularly SS) could be considered a bit insensitive whilst veterans are still alive, but that's just my two cents.
