I'm glad someone revived this thread. Although I was surprised my last one survived as long as it did. Does anyone do any reenacting in the greater New York area or within 3-4 hours of that area?

Do you have a full suit of armor? If so is everything bought bespoke from a blacksmith? I have everything from vikings to the Civil War where I live but of course nothing in the late 15th century. IJAfag here again. Bullshit akin to that actually does happen in the states, in fact, some happened in our World War II community. Long story short, a couple of people got butt hurt over stupid shit (dunno exact details, people are playing telephone with all this) and decided to doxx approximately 500 reenactors from multiple units - some outside the states including at least one unit in SEA region. I'm not sure how much targeted activity went on towards those people afterwards, but everyone is pissed off.

There can be elements of experimental archaeology in it depending on the aim of the group and/or individual.

Not really, I asked the question and I'm a reenactor, trying to create discussion and shit.

I mostly do it because there's certain aspects you can't appreciate unless you experience it, equipment weight, etc. I particularly enjoy knowing that most if the people you educate, despite reenactment being inherently kind of flawed, would have otherwise never have interacted with history

Regarding the LARP question, I have gotten asked that before too, and my answer will be, no, they are different things. However I will specify some reenactments are less scripted than most people think. WWII events' public battles at least, in my experience, sometimes turn out with unexpected victories because of the combination of your allies being really good and the opponent being gracious enough to take their hits like real soldiers.

I'm not sure how the musket-era reenactors do it though, because of the line marching tactics I assume they draw lots before hand as to who dies in what order, but I can't be sure.

What's the situation with later Roman/Byzantine reenacting? Kind of curious about it but not sure if it's all Augustan legionaries for the most part. In the UK if it matters.

As someone who used to do American Civil War, it's either by lots, your unit commander telling you to do it, or you feel like taking one.

Depends on the unit and event.

All reenactment is LARP. Are you really a knight? No. Are you really a US Marine storming Iwa Jima? No. Are you really a Roman legionary? No. Do you actually chop people up with axes? No. Do you really shoot people with rifles? No.

You're playing a role and operated under a preagreed rule system for combat, to a live audience, either members of the public or fellow reenactors. It's LARP, just with one more rule: Be authentic to X time period.

I'm white with Mexican on my Dad's side. I'm pretty much white as fuck (people look at me funny when I tell them my Dad is Mexican), but i'm a 5'8" manlet who literally cannot loose weight. I eat right and exercise, but I still look like a fucking pumpkin with legs. I do Napoleonic currently, like the 60th faggots. I kind of want to do ww2 German, but I'm a bit reluctant because of a few reasons. Extra price, knowledge of the period isnt good enough, and I think reenacting ww2 (particularly SS) could be considered a bit insensitive whilst veterans are still alive, but that's just my two cents.
