Well, Constantinople was an indirect cause for discovering America accidentally.
I guess you could say it was the most important city in history.
>>
>>659791
Beijing was only build by the mongols and only during the early Ming Dynasty was the capital of a histoycally relevant empire.

You can say that Kaifeng, Changan, Luoyang or Jinzhou were all more important chinese cities during their long history.

Beijing is literally the youngest of China's capitals.

"The City" in China, the Rome equivalent, was Chang'an. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Qin which created the Empire. From 200's BC to 900's AD, all unified dynasties up to the T'ang situated their capital in Chang'an as a symbol of Imperial Continuity/Legacy.

Its's urban plan was considered the perfect urban plan in East Asia. Chinese cities all over copied its plan. The capitals of Korean/Japanese/Vietnamese states copied it's plan. Hell Kyoto was a direct copy of it.

It also contained Daming Palace. Which is the biggest palace in Asia and set the standard for Palaces in the region. It is 4 times the size of the forbidden city- which in itself was a homage to Daming Palace. Unfortunately it was burned down during the Dynastic Wars of the 900's and only its foundations remain visible.

Luoyang was the capital during 200 years of Han rule and if Im not wrong again when China was united again for a while after the Three Kingdoms period.

Honestly there are so many cities in the middle east that were important in the fullness of history.

You've got

Damascus
Babylon
Baghdad
Sumer
Uruk
Ur
Assur
Niveneh

>Luoyang was the capital during 200 years of Han rule
Han rule was 400 years.

Also its first capital was Chang'an. Then Wang Mang's dickery happened. After that they moved to Luoyang. Though Chang'an was still culturally important. I mean, hell, Luoyang was just spitting distance from Chang'an, wanting to be close as possible to thc cultural Capital.

Rome
The civilisation came from there

Ayyuthaya was inspired by Angkor.

Since, you know, that Thai were settled in what was once Khmer Provinces
>>

Well yeah, but didnt change the fact that Luoyang was for just as long the capital as Changan (though the other one was always the second capital up to the end of the Tang)

>Whats the most important city in history ?

Probably split between Istanbul and Jerusalem. Rome is also up there, even if its mostly overrated.
Athens maybe? Their attempt at imperialism dictated much of early history, and their cultural life influenced all of Europe for thousands of years.
>>
Venice
Istanbul
Rome
Carthage
Jerusalem
Mecca

through in a handful of super ancient cities in the mid east too
>>
>>663614
Rome, Venice and Carthage have only been very important for a limited amount of time.
Istanbul, Jerusalem and Mecca have been relevant and important for many hundreds of years. They are in a league of their own.
>>
Memel 100%..
>>
>>663618
without Carthage, there is no Rome
>>
>>663621
And thats the limit of Carthage's relevance to the greater history of the world.
>>
>>663614

>>
>>663630

>>

>>663633
it may have been irrelevant but its been the financial centre of the world for over a century now

exactly what Carthage was except London has a stronger legacy than Carthage who got cucked
>>

If Carthage's biggest achievement is being a punching bag for another overrated city, then its not as important as you claim.
>>
New york

Jerusalem tbqh. Centre of the three major Abrahamic religions, it has driven politics since 3000 years ago among major empires, and continues to drive politics today around the world.

Constantinople, Alexandria, lacadaemonia/Athens, Rome, London, Jerusalem ... Bukhara and Kashgar?
>>
>>659654
In addition to the ones you posted. Keep in mind these are the most important, not just the 'greatest'.

>Europe
Paris
London (and probably some other cities involved in the industrial revolution)
Florence
Kiev
Moscow
Lisbon
Probably some European colonial cities outside of Europe itself (eg. Goa, Batavia, Mexico, etc)
Maybe Venice and Genoa

>Middle East
Uruk
Babylon
Baghdad

>Southern Asia
Pataliputra
Delhi

>East Asia
Tokyo
Beijing
Anyang
Probably a few more Chinese ones

>Southeast Asia (these are only really important on a region scale though)
Trowulan
Ayutthaya
Pagan
>>
>>659646
Berlin
>>
>>659646
Probably Jerusalem.
Istanbul/Rome/Venice/Baghdad/Damascus/Mecca/Zanzibar get honorable mentions.
London and New York are also important, but have not been for very long.

~100* years later.

Ottomans used a turkified Constantinople (Konstantinyee i think), it was the Turks who changed it to Istanbul. Istanbul has only been regionally relevant, but the same city with a different name a few hundred years ago was the center of the world.
>>
>>665182
Point being that the city was only relevant with under the name Constantinople or variations of it. By the time it was changed to Istanbul it was largely irrelevant.
>>
>>659646
fucking rome
sorry it's not a new or interesting answer but that's because it's so clearly true
>>
Moscow

Make or break empires trying to capture it

Poland/Lithuania
France
Germany
The Golden horde
>>
>>664523
Good question actually. "It's a nice place" can't be the only reason.
>>
>>665280
>"It's a nice place" can't be the only reason.
It is. Also the reason there are so many treaties of versailles
>>
>>659730
kek, nice story this season, hope you win the title.
>>
Rome is still kind of relevant because the Pope resides there
>>
>Ancient era
Alexandria
Babylon
Athens
>Medieval period
Rome
Constantinople
Damascus
>Early modern era
Paris
Constantinople aka Istambul
>Industrial revolution times
London
New York
>>
>>668126
pope is irrelevant though
>>
Washington DC
New York
Los Angeles
Houston
etc
>>
>>659646
Tallahassee, Florida.
>>
>Europe
Rome
Athens
Istanbul
Possibly Paris but that's pushing it
>Mid East
Baghdad
Ur, Sumer
Jerusalem
Mecca
>South Asia
Delhi
>East
Kyoto
All of China's imperial cities
>New World
Tenochtitlan
Cuzco
Cahokia is irrelevant
>Africa
Timbuktu?

pure power and central dominance from a material and raw numbers standpoint? New York, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul
