Around what time, historically, did people start identifying more as individuals than as a family or community?
>>
Twentieth century when humanism took the West by storm.

The moment people started using the same tripcodes in multiple threads

I believe it relates to the rise of urban cultures, coming and going the urbs grew and shrunk.

Not to say cities didn't have group identity, tutelary deities, etc.

But only within those massive population concentrations people could feel "outside" the monkey-sphere. Then, regular group dynamics, like those you may experience in small groups (your office, your clan, your tiny tribe), start to PERHAPS become something else. And even then, not usually.

According to Joseph Campbell the time this happened was the Reinnance. He believes the very first instance we can actually see the idea of the individual being more important than the group is in the Grail Legends.

*Campbell believes the Grail represents the fully developed inner-self. When Author declares a quest to find the Grail he says that it would be a disgrace to search for it in a group (collectivism) and that each man must travel his own way to find the grail, starting at the point where the road is most dark and unknown.
*In one of the legends one of the knights falls in love with a queen and has an an affair with her. He is told that for this he will be condemned to hell, the knight says that his love is stronger than hell and so he does not fear it. This represents the individual desire's overcoming the judgement of God and ultimatly one's own search being greater than one's religious or social duties. Even union with God takes a back seat.
*In the black knight legend, the good knight defeats the black knight but in doing so he is bound to marry his queen. He ends up living in the black knight's castle, having his wife, and eventually he puts on his old armor and goes to fight the other knights of the round. He loses his individual self and becomes the new black knight. He than regains his true self and rejects the kingdom he inherited. This is a story about an individual who has become corrupted by collectivism, he lost his way and became someone other than himself, in the end he rediscovers himself.

It was funny because the question was when "did people start identifying more as individuals", one anonymous poster said "never" and it was the tripfag who countered.

Individualism has a western value for hundreds of years. It's what separates us from the East.

Why would you want that? The state or le free market will end up taking over the family functions.

If you look at the technology that is coming out family is actually kind of out-dated.

If we can grow babies in test tubes there's no reason to stick to having 1 man and 1 woman (or 2 men or two women) raise the kid. You can have the kid be raised by a community, ala The Republic. Of course there will be old fashioned folk that have traditional children birth but I think the greatest success in the future will come from models that do not use the family.

It's a brave new world.

The group dynamic is a response to hardship, and so individualism happens wherever people are secure with all the necessities of life.

It's always been there among the elite, but it's more widespread now because of the relative comfort and abundance of goods in the modern world.

bingo

In order to meet the needs of society people we require a more independent society. People are expected to make difficult choices in a world that is constantly changing. So the source of truth can no longer come from outside but from inside. Previously this type of responsibility only existed in the ruling caste while the collectivism was a way to organize the masses.

Do you fellows think that the most corrupt individuals now are capable of reverting to an efficient group dynamic given the impetus, or are they lost causes?

Oh SNAP, son.

Could you clarify what you mean by corrupt?
