True fact: American Communists played a notable role in the struggle against slavery.

From Philip S. Foner biographical introduction to Friedrich A. Sorge's "Labor Movement in the United States":

Moreover, men like Weydemeyer, Douai, and members of the Communist Club, including Sorge, formed a significant force in the Republican Party, seeking to push the party in a more radical direction, particularly in the direction of favoring the total abolition of slavery.

Apparently by the time the Civil War broke out Willich and Marx mended their relationship with Willich conceding in favor of Marx's views, so he's usually listed by Marxists among the Communists who fought in the Union Army together with Weydemeyer, Jacobi, etc.

I find it funny how American Marxists back in the day proudly identified with the traditions of the past whereas American "Marxists" today do the exact opposite.
