Spanish Civil War thread
Why did the western countries just sit back and watch a parliamentary democracy like their own be overthrown by a military putsch?
Shitskins aren't people

For the same reasons they let Germany get as far as it did.

Spineless appeasement?
>parliamentary democracy like their own

>western countries
Which ones are you referring to? France and England I assume?
France was weak as fuck and England won't risk anything for a continental nation.
>implying western countries supported any revolutionary attempt
Western countries make shitty allies. Commies like to pretend that they didn't help because "muh revolution", for after WWII, they did the same with Eastern Europe, sat back and watched parliamentary democracies being overthrow by communists in Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland etc...

Again, wars are never about ideals. Just because you're a democratic country it doesn't imply you are obligated to help other democratic countries. In fact there's plenty of examples in the 20th century when western democracies helped communists, authoritarians, fascists, or any other kind of non-democrats.

Many of the western powers were sympathetic to Franco. Remember this was a time when anti left sentiment was very high in Europe. Spain also had lots of foreign investors, especially in Britain. Fear of collectivisation of assets led to general support for the nationalists.
Britain was also reluctant to get involved in a conflict that might pit them against the Italians and Germans, causing an all out war. They told the French, who had a left wing government at the time, that if they got involved in a conflict with Italy and France over Spain, the British would not aid them. This fear of war led to a nonintervention pact, the idea behind it was to prevent any supplies getting to Spain so that the conflict would peter out due to lack of resources, but in practice Germany and Italy ignored it.
The USA was still pursuing an isolationist policy at the time, and catholic lobby groups prevented any action.

>In fact there's plenty of examples
Enumerate them then.

The US supporting the USSR, Franco, Pinochet and Ho Chi Min all within 4 decades, for example.

Because western powers talk about democracy at home but prefer despots abroad
Why? If its the same person in power for a long time he is easier to predict and also easier to corrupt as you build up favours and blackmail info
Because fuck communism or any political party vaguely left amirite western governments
