>>582001 >implying France's natural borders aren't the Rhine
It's not because Alsace was part of the "Holy" "Roman" "Empire" that it was German. The "Holy" "Roman" "Empire" wasn't Germany. It was literally a bunch of princes, archdukes and counts who all wanted to do their own things. t. a french citizen from les Vosges.
Because once people think something belongs to them, they want to hold onto it forever. A year or two back, I had a case where one woman held up another at gunpoint over jewelry worth about eighty bucks, because her cheating husband gave it to his mistress, but god damn it, it was HERS and she was going to get it BACK.
>>584109 >AH invades Serbia as retaliation for Franz after Germany promises to back them up >welp, guess it's Germany's fault
>Pilsudski passes away and his successor welches on some damn fair deals >Hitler PARTITIONS Poland with the Soviet Union >the British declare war only on Germany >Germans attack the USSR because they fear the commies are growing too large in influence >stupid ass nips bring America into the mix >Germany tries to make peace with literally everybody but Russia many times >Germany is overwhelmed >welp, guess it's Germany's fault
>>584174 Yes, because they were allied with Japan. Japan declared war on America after Pearl Harbor, and Germany figured that with both of them taking America on, they could handle it. Then, America wiped the floor with Japan after some stalemates and narrow victories. Then Germany was left trying to keep Italy from getting fucked by Ethiopia and Greece.
>>584189 > Japan declared war on America after Pearl Harbor, and Germany figured that with both of them taking America on, they could handle it. >We thought declaring war on the world's largest industrial power would be easy >Therefor, it's not our fault!
>>584192 It's not that Hitler thought it would be easy, it was just a question of whether to abandon his ally or risk everything to take on a superpower, which he was already doing surprisingly well. Not amazing, mind, just surprising considering the odds.
>>584300 But they didn't start WW1, at all. If you're going to blame Germany for it because Austro-Hungary wouldn't have had the balls to put out that ultimatum without Germany backing them up then by that logic Russia is to blame because Serbia was an even smaller and weaker and country then Austro-Hungary yet had the balls to stand up to them solely because Russia was backing them.
>>583467 No, France got the south of Alsace and a few city after the 30 years war, in which the german protestant princes were its allies (remember they gave France Metz Toul and Verdun against Charles V before that). Louis XIV used the fact the terms were unclear to conquer the rest of Alsace and other towns before the 9 years war that was declared for this reason. France being victorious in this war, they kept all Alsace.
>>584327 remind me about the part where Russia dished out ultimatums to as of yet neutral countries, invaded two countries - one of those strictly with no allegiance to anyone - when they were "just backing up their ally like Germany"
>>584327 >Forgot the part where your whole mobilization plan includes invading neutral countries. >Also giving blank check to your lapdog to steer up shit, knowing full well it's gonna allow you to attack France and Russia. >Having a militaristic junta as a government and thinking you were totally the poor victim.
>>584327 >because Serbia was an even smaller and weaker and country then Austro-Hungary yet had the balls to stand up to them solely because Russia was backing them. No, actually, Russia told Serbia not to piss off the Austro-Hungarians, and the Serbians agreed to every term and condition in the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum (which included removing any number of officials the Austro-hungarian government told them to remove, removing anything remotely mean about the Austro-Hungarian empire from the public sphere and letting Austro-Hungarian officials preside and take part in the murder investigation) except one, the part where Austro-Hungarian officials were going to preside over Serbian courts.
>>585237 >Whoever owns Alsace will have advantage during the war. >France owns Alsace in 1870 >loses the war and Alsace >Germany owns Alsace in 1914 >loses the war and Alsace
you sure about that? I mean, I get the "mountain" range idea, but in 70, the germans pushed right through it, in 1914 it was just ignored and then in 44, the americans pushed right through it, it's not some major obstacle and a great factor.
>>582001 Speaking a German dialect doesn't make you German. Afaik, by 1870 the Alsatians didn't feel like they should be part of a unified German state. So basically a case of natural borders, and later on keeping land that's been yours for some time
