Why does Uruguay exist?

It looks like an Argentine province
>>
It's a buffer state created to solve the problem of the fucking river
>>
>>561875
It actually used to be one.
Something with 33 uruguayans liberating.
Also David Guetta, presenting on Punta del Este shouted out "Good evening, Buenos Aires" and keks were had.

Why the fuck does Liechtenstein exist?

>you will never be a remnant state of the HRE 200 years after the fact
>you will never survive the post-Napoleonic cartografuck, and both World Wars

It seems that now I can only digest greentexted, bitesized history.

this is all wrong

the territorry of uruguay was colonized by the spanish. culturally it is pretty much the same as argentina. however when brazil got its independence it snatched uruguay and it became a special brazilian province. eventually, due to the large cultural differences between brazil and uruguay (they called it "cisplatina"), uruguay got in a war. on one side, an uruguyan minority pro-brazil and the brazilian army itself led by dom pedro the first, and on the other side, most of the uruguayans that were supported by argentina.

brazil lost the war and uruguay gained its independence. not much longer, argentina was planning on annexing uruguay but brazil shows up again. brazil invades a now indenpendent uruguay and places a puppet in power. now uruguay is no longer argentina's bitch. it's brazil's bitch instead. a puppet state. it was only after brazil became a republic that uruguay no longer was a brazilian puppet state.

nowadays, it's a member of mercosul and has good relations with these two big players of south america.

Because it's a subtle little piggy bank/vacation spot for what's left of Yurop's old money, just like Monaco and Switzerland.
>>

Switzerland survived because it was hard as fuck to conquer
>>
>>562383
That too.
>>
Brazil could just move in 5 million people across the border and make it a state

Thats not what happened,

There was a guy whose name was Artigas who wanted Argentina to be a confederation and wanted to give natives rights and all that. Buenos Aires hated him and natives so they never helped him and in fact wanted him dead and tried to kill him several times. Artigas went up to free Uruguay from the spanish rule. Not that long after he succeeded Brazil wanted to annex Uruguay, defeated Artigas and founded the Cisplatina province, some other Argentine went and freed the capital and were successful which prompted the Cisplatina war but not because Argentina gave 2 fucks about Uruguay itself but the risk of having Brs posses half the Rio de la Plata river, without control over that river Argentina was fucked so the war began.

Argentina was winning battles but ran out of money, in reality i don't think they could have won since Brazil had like 10x the population, and the brits didn't want war in SA so in the end Rivadavia (Argentina's president) sent one representative to sign peace. It seems that guy betrayed him and signed something he was told not to which resulted in an outrage which got the president kicked from office. The peace treaty was never rectified, but nevertheless Brazil took more than half of Uruguay's territory and Uruguay became independent state (by the order of the British who didn't want trade to be interrupted)

Since then its been used to do money laundering just like a poor's man Switzerland

So could Argentina and Paraguay, but the only countries in Latin America that seem interested in extra clay are Bolivia and Nicaragua, and both are poor shitholes without any allies.
>>
It's the Belgium of South America. Argentina wouldn't permit Brazil have it, Brazil wouldn't permit Argentina have it, so they simply let it be a country.
>>

Uruguay is our little Austria to Germany

We can't annex it but you can't tell the difference between us and them
>>
>>562308
It's the rump state of a formerly much larger set of holdings from a noble/princely family. The titular castle is in Austria nowadays, and they once held land in the former HRE and later Austria-Hungary. Probably they should have just joined Austria, but it's useful to have an external state for money laundering and such.

Montevideo was founded by Portuguese you retard.

>however when brazil got its independence it snatched uruguay
wrong, when the Spanish colonies were revolting the Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves took the opportunity to grab Uruguay. Brazil wa not independent.

>due to the large cultural differences between brazil and uruguay

bollocks, plenty of Rio Grandense farmers in the north of Uruguay at the time.

> most of the uruguayans that were supported by argentina.

bollocks again, Argentina wanted to annex Uruguay from Brazil. The war was a stalemate of years and hurt commerce in the Platinian region, so the British mediated a deal.

> not much longer, argentina was planning on annexing uruguay but brazil shows up again.

wrong again. Brazil intervened in favour of the Colorados Party, against the Blancos Party, with the support of Argentina. Paraguay/Lopez dictator was allied with the Blancos and invaded Brazil and Argentina in a futile attempt to help them.

please never post again.

Rather than becoming another backwater province to an already struggling state we'd rather keep on being the Switzerland of Latin America.

Montevideo was a rival trading port of Buenos Aires. During the revolution against Spain it became clear that Montevideo sponsored a federation of provinces inspired in the USA against Buenos Aires centralism. Then Brazilian empire invaded and 5 years after that an insurrection led to a war between Brazil and Argentina. The UK meddled in and proposed to create a buffer state, which suited british interests in the South Atlantic. Buenos Aires was happy to see a rival port go away and keep the rest of the provinces under its centralism.

> the territorry of uruguay was colonized by the spanish
only after 1720, before that the portuguese had built some settlements. And the north of Uruguay is pretty bilingual.
>>
>>562341
pretty sure your not mentioning the part where the Argentinian dictator Rosas conquered it (or at least occupied it I can't remember). Uruguay's fall was a big reason why his own regime fell. Can someone confirm?

you also forget to mention the extra similarity: perfidious albion had a stake in keeping its independence ;^)

Well Bolivia's buttblasted because they lost Antofagasta and all the valuable mines in the Atacama to Chile.

Think of it like the post-WW1 butthurt over Danzig that Germany had, only with a country too poor and impotent to do anything about it.
